I am very curious as to what exactly he will become.

I have a feeling my current expectation of him to be a rich man’s J.J. Barea is pessimistic, but this Linsanity business has given me some serious tired-head, even as an Asian.

Team IQ

On if this is the smartest team he’s been on

I think so. We have a lot of high basketball IQ’s on this team. For instance, the play Jason Terry got late in the game [against the Clippers] — that backdoor cut? Jason Kidd basically drew that up in the timeout when Jason saw the way Mo Williams was guarding him. Most point guards can’t do that in a timeout. We can do that because we have guys who really, really understand the game.

by Goyogringo on Feb 16, 2012 5:22 PM CST reply actions

Pretty sure Kidd did the same thing late in Game 3 of the Finals.

He saw how Haslem was overplaying Dirk and found him for a backdoor cut to tie the game. Thing of beauty.

One of the many wasted first round picks of the Mavericks in the '90s.

I’ll always remember Norm talking about how he runs like a deer and would score so much on the fastbreak. He was terrible. Randy White was supposed to be the next Karl Malone. Not quite.

But one of my very favorites was Samaki Walker. Who we drafted ahead of Kobe, Jermaine O’Neal, Steve Nash, Peja and Big Z.

Yup. Just dominating the Sun Belt right now

16/10 with 3 blocks a game. 59% from the field and 46% from 3. Getting late round buzz and could go higher depending on his workouts. Watched him a couple of times in person and he’s a beast.

by sprite on Feb 21, 2012 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

Some speculation that he could be in the lotto convo with another year

but on the other hand you’re playing at UNT so… it’s not like your stock is going to rise that much when you’re playing SunBelt opponents weekly. Selfishly, I’d love him to stay but I’d be surprised if he did. Could probably go as high as 17 or so with a beast workout.

for a freshman with less than 20 games under his belt

I’d call him avering 16-10 with his shooting percentages pretty close to dominant. I’m too lazy to research it but is there a freshman scoring more?

If he was putting up 20+ a night he would be a top 10 lock I think. As it is, I could definitely see him sneaking into the top 20 if he keeps it up and performs like most expect in workouts.

Oakley on KG and Perk. Love it.
Garnett left Minnesota and hollered and screamed and all that but he’s not a tough guy. He’s one of the weakest guys to ever play the game. He’s a complimentary player and went to Paul Pierce’s team and won a championship. I wouldn’t consider him a top 10 tough guy.

If Kendrick Perkins would play basketball, Oklahoma City would win a championship the next 3 or 4 years…[He brings] Nothing [to the table]. That’s why he got dunked on and he got mad about someone tweeting about it, you’re a power forward, you don’t let guys dunk on you. I played 18, 19 years I got dunked on 3 times, you’re limited on offense do something on defense, get a rebound make some free throws.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Feb 21, 2012 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

It's up for debate, certainly.

In the end though, I feel like it’s been born out over time that elite, championship caliber scorers are more pivotal to playoff success than elite defenders. System defense can be schemed and created. To this point there’s very little evidence that an offense can be designed to consistently score points late in games with out a truly elite offensive player being involved.

Also, I think it’s interesting that Garnett is considered one of the greatest defenders ever and he’s never been able to guard Dirk at all. I realize superstars are going to make even great defenders look bad sometimes, but Garnett has never even had a prayer against Dirk, even since they started letting him bear hug him over the last few years.

And Dirk absolutely made him his bitch the only time they met in the playoffs.

by jthig32 on Feb 21, 2012 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Just as a refresher

Dirk averaged 33/16 in the playoffs against Garnett as a 23 year old.

Garnett put up 24/19, so certainly not a bad series from him…but 33/16 against one of the best defenders of all time during his absolute prime? Yeah.

by jthig32 on Feb 21, 2012 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

To me, it might come down to exactly how much better Dirk has been on offense compared to Garnett.

I think it might be that Dirk is the best offensive player of his generation (i.e. post-MJ), if you add the unmeasurable factor that he spreads the floor with his unique skillset, to his statistically-measured combination of volume+efficiency, although I’m thinking Shaq has an argument and possibly LeBron when he’s done. And Kobe, I suppose, though I really don’t know how to perceive his offense.

And I think you might (probably) be right about valuing elite offense over elite defense at the same level, and it might go down to even simple anecdotal evidence of great scorers being able to get their numbers seemingly without losing too much effiency, while being guarded by great one-on-one defenders. I think if they were valued ‘equally’, as I suppose I approached it, Garnett might come out the better.

Tangentially, on the subject of factoring defensive value into evaluating a player’s “greatness”, I keep going back to Bill Russell and where he should be rated. My view is that he’s greatly overrated because I’m skeptical over whether or not he should deserve as much credit as he does from his supposed transcendent defensive influence.

even with his injuries this year, Kidd is still way ahead of Nash on D.

Nash only works if you have Dwight Howard at center.

That’s a bit of hyperbole, but not much. With this roster, or something resembling it, Nash just won’t work. They can’t cover up his horrible defense.

what's your take

you think Roddy’s D is too valuable this year? or Lamar is too valuable for this specific team?

by Longhorn on Feb 21, 2012 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

I'd do it.

Roddy’s not a rotation player this season if everyone is healthy and Odom just hasn’t shown anything close to his potential.

I don’t have a ton of confidence that our defense could compensate for Nash, I mean how do he and Jet share the back court? Who close games if those two can’t play together. But I’d still do it for Roddy and Odom just to see what happens.

Plus moving Roddy and Odom clears almost 5Mil off our cap for next season.

by jthig32 on Feb 21, 2012 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

odom

i thought he has a team option next year…which, either team would probably decline, no?

by Longhorn on Feb 21, 2012 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Not quite.

He has a contract for next year that is only partially guaranteed. 2.4 Mil of it is guaranteed. They have to make the decision whether to guarantee the full contract or release him by June 29th.

by jthig32 on Feb 22, 2012 8:50 AM CST up reply actions

I love the idea of Nash

I just question the fit here. And while dumping Odom would be awesome I still think that’d be selling low on Roddy. If Donnie and co. think Nash is going to push them over the top, sure. I’m just not so sure.

thought I replied here

interwebs must have deleted it.

I don’t think it’s a given that Nash will leave Phoenix. He seems to have cultivated a special relationship with that team, and especially the medical/training staff, which is viewed as the best in the league. Grant Hill credits them with reviving his career and he chose to resign.

Phoenix will have some cap space this offseason, and I’m sure they will be looking to jettison someone like Frye, Warrick or Childress at the deadline to get a little more.

It wouldn’t shock me if the front office could sell Nash on the idea of Gortat+Morris+FA being a good enough core to come back to.

by Alan Smithee on Feb 25, 2012 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

I completely disagree.

They already convinced him to re-sign once, and look where that got him.

I think he’s really unhappy and is just too good a guy to force anything.

I would be absolutely shocked if he re-signed with Phoenix this offseason.

by jthig32 on Feb 26, 2012 8:32 AM CST up reply actions

I think if he was really unhappy

they would have already traded him. Why wouldn’t they? Yes, it would have been a short-term PR hit(if he leaves in the offseason they’ll take a PR hit, too), but at least they could have gotten something in return for him.

Nash’s kids are also going to be in Phoenix no matter where he goes, since he’s divorced now. I wouldn’t be surprised if that plays a factor, also. Steve is not the typical NBA mercenary, I don’t think. All players want to win a title, but somehow I have a hard time envisioning a Malone/Payton scenario where he signs with the Heat or someone for cheap just to get a ring.

He could move on. I don’t think it’s a given, though. In any event, my initial comment was that Phoenix would “let him retire” there, meaning I don’t think they’re going to send him away for anything short of a superstar offer. You just gave me a chance to touch on the Nash situation, which I think is one of the most unusual in basketball.

Author suggests Rondo for Deron
One person in the Nets organization who is not directly connected to negotiations with Williams offered his opinion on the star’s intentions, saying he doesn’t think there’s any chance the guard stays with New Jersey. He also thought the team would be wise to come to grips with that and trade him before the March 15 deadline

x

by sprite on Feb 22, 2012 7:48 AM CST reply actions

I dunno.

The scenario I fear the most right now is Deron and Dwight in NJ. I’d be fine with Deron being traded to Boston or just about anywhere at this point (not LA).

Does Deron Williams leave NJ this summer?

Chad Ford
Probably. The only scenario where he doesn’t is if the Nets swing a deal for Dwight Howard at the trade deadline. At that point, I think Williams hangs around. If that doesn’t happen, I think Williams will join Dwight Howard (assuming he’s not traded to the Lakers in March) in Dallas next summer. Lots of signals pointing to this being the preferred outcome for both players.

by behindthebag on Feb 22, 2012 4:29 PM CST reply actions

I think it always was. As long as Dirk showed he still had it, the possibility of this happening was very real.

But a lot has to go right for it to remain real. Dwight has to stay in Orlando and Deron has to stay in NJ (or not be traded to the Lakers). It has to be exactly that way.

by behindthebag on Feb 22, 2012 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly, I wouldn't be heart broken if that happened.

Because that would all but guarantee us Williams if you believe all the rumors. I still think Dwight might just sign with NJ in the off season, so I wouldn’t hate Howard LA to make sure we get Deron.

by jthig32 on Feb 22, 2012 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

I just don’t see Dwight or Deron thinking that’s the place they want to spend the rest of their careers.

Regardless of where the pick is.

I didn’t want to say this when you were trying to get me to take an Ackley package for Lawrie, but I don’t think he has much value at all in our league. The likelihood of Trout becoming a type of top-5 player that you’ll want to keep is far greater than Ackley. I think Ackley offers you a really nice floor, but in a league with Kipnis/Kinsler/Cano/Pedroia/Kendrick/etc., he’s not that appealing.

by LiamP on Feb 22, 2012 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

Ackley is the pivot point.

I have a similar fear… I am gambling.

I mentioned in one of the OT threads that I’m not sure how strong his fantasy value will be. He does a little of everything… but there’s a real chance he’s the 7th best 2nd baseman year in and year out.

I’m taking a chance that his ability to get on base in that lineup and the addition of Montero makes his ability to score runs a bit better and that he’s young and might take another step.

If Ackley doesn’t take a step then I didn’t get as much as I should have.

I love David Price because of the Ks and his age.
