OT: Vegas Baby - 30th Birthday

It seems I have the pressure of planning a 30th Birthday for my wife. Thankfully, her sister almost has her talked into Vegas. I have to say that is a win/win for everyone and mainly me, because it's Vegas. I have been to Vegas once, but almost 15 years ago. I am looking for help to try to finish the sell to my wife and get to Vegas. These are some questions I have and I know LSB can help: Best (most cost effective) way to plan the trip? Will fly out from DFW. Best shows? Best place to stay (nice and cost effective). Any other great Vegas info that will help me be in Vegas with my wife on her 30th. Date we are going in early June. I tried to get her to go for Spring Training, but I'll be happy in June.

Probably should have put this in the OT...

…seems like this topic comes up fairly frequently. IIRC, people feel like The Venetian is the best bang for the buck. Shows – O and Ka, though I’ve heard Zumanity is rated really well by couples.

Venetian is very centrally located and is pretty nice.

I definitely recommend. Right there would also be Caesars and the Mirage, and if you want cheaper, TI.

Zumanity

That is the one show we have seen. I recommend it. Probably should have put this in the OT, but I’m hell bent on going to Vegas. Mainly, because I have no back up plan.

Stay: Venetian

Shows: No idea, but I’m sure one of Celine Dion or Elton John or Neil Diamond will be there. That should be fun, right? Right?

I'm leaving for Vegas tomorrow

Penn and teller and Elton John are both great show.

I always stay at Caesars.

Caesars Pool

Adam, how is Caesars Pool. Want to spend some time at the pool with several drinks in my hand. I love to gamble, but suck at it. So the pool will be a hangout to spend the mornings.

if you want pool.. i think mandalay bay is 2nd to none

Yeah it's pretty isolated.

Close to New York, New York, Luxor, and Excalibur, but I don’t like those hotels either.

by FuturePants on Feb 16, 2012 10:16 AM CST up reply actions

they all suck. new york new york's redeeming quality

is that the casino floor is pretty fun with bars lined on the outside of it near the exit to the strip.

I want to say that the Wynn has blackjack tables in the water.

Or at least swim-up blackjack. Some hotel does, at any rate; may not be the Wynn.

I am going to Vegas

For the first weekend of the NCAA tournament in March. This is also going to be my bachelor party as well.

We are staying in the Flamingo. We went as cheap as possible on the hotel.

All our funds will be going to Casino, betting on the tournament, and strippers.

flamingo isnt bad at all.. old school vegas on the strip at reasonable price..

they just redid the pool area as well

I'll be there that same weekend

My favorite casino on the strip is Planet Hollywood – it has a high ceiling so it’s not smoky and has a great atmosphere (music & crowd)

I just stayed at the Aria

Which is part of the new massive City Center portion of the strip. It was really nice and big, and had some good restaurants.

Venetian usually has some good deals on suites (a lot of the time you can get a suite there for the same place as a typical room at somewhere like Aria).

I stayed there about a year ago

one of my favorite hotels on the strip. super nice, casino is fun. sportsbook is hidden and meh, but tv’s are plentiful. pretty nice area to bet the horses

I stayed at the Aria about 18 months ago.

And my impression was that it was super nice and the staff was great and service was great, but it just felt somehow bland. Dunno, hard to describe. No complaints whatsoever, just not my favorite.

by FuturePants on Feb 16, 2012 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, the lobby was super nice and classy....not ultra loud and tacky like so many other hotels, too.

We also went to the nightclub that’s right by the entrance to the mall there; can’t remember the name of it. But anyways, it also was just ok – there were these big windows and it just was weird being in a nightclub that overlooked a promenade leading into a mall. Kind of altered the party vibe/atmosphere of the nightclub somewhat.

Expedia

My wife and I eloped back in November and went thru Expedia. We stayed at the Golden Nugget from Friday to Monday with round-trip air for around $1700. We also only bought our package one month in advance. Both of us have stayed on the strip at various places before, but she had never been to the Fremont St. district. I find the old casinos cheaper, and the Nugget is far and away the classiest casino in that area. A bus/tram will take you to the strip whenever you need; you can buy 24 hr or 3 day (I think) passes to ride for just a few bucks. My advice is to stay away from the family friendly casinos like Excalibur or Circus-Circus. I don’t go to Vegas to be around kids. The concierge at your hotel will help you a lot with what shows are in town, what they are, yadda-yadda. Good luck!!

Where's my wallet?!?!?

Don't ever go in the basement of the Excalibur.

It’s an arcade/midway for kids that looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in 15 years. If I was a child molester, it would be my favorite spot in Vegas. Everyone else should avoid.

I should clarify my whole trip (hotel.airfare,wedding,etc.) was $1700. The suite I had only cost about $350.

I really like the Bellagio.

They seem to be coming down on their prices lately, but in June you may not find the best deals there. I’ve also heard great things about the Venetian as far as price/quality. The pool at Bellagio is very nice, but it’s not a scene at all. Just a nice pool where you can have a few drinks.

As far as shows, you should definitely see Ka at the MGM. Hands-down the best show I’ve seen in Vegas. Would love to see Penn & Teller as well.

I saw Penn & Teller when I went a few years ago

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Went during the winter so it wasn’t busy season, but check out the Tix 4 Tonight booths on the strip for cheap show tickets, especially if the shows aren’t selling out & you just want to get it & don’t care about sitting really close.

I just got back from Vegas over Super Bowl weekend. We had a free place to stay at a condo

but we spent most of our time at Cosmopolitan, Planet Hollywood, Lagaasse’s (Palazzo sportsbook), and Bill’s.

I recommend the Cosmopolitan. It’s a pretty rad place. The upscale burger joint in there is good (Heitmillers?).

One of my other favorite places was Bill’s. It’s easy, the waitresses are quick and friendly and the tables are lively.

If you want a solid, fairly cheap place to stay I’d try MGM or Planet Hollywood.
