Friday Morning Rangers Update

We're only days away from pitchers and catchers reporting to Surprise and Rangers news is quiet before the coming storm of Yu-mania and Josh Hamilton relapse questions.

Drew Davison of the Star-Telegram notes that Ron Washington and Jon Daniels are confident heading into spring training.

Dealing with distraction is nothing new for the Rangers and T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com talks about the flurry of upcoming distractions.

Richard Durrett's Positional Outlook series on ESPN.com concludes with a look at the front office.

And finally, Gerry Fraley of the DMN has a short blog post with some C.J. Wilson quotes about his possible reasons for his post season struggles last year.

Would love to see the Halos lose 90 games but I will settle for them to finish in second.

I want them to get the 2nd Wild Card

only to have it be CJ’s turn to pitch. After he’s thrown 3.1, 4 hits, 8 walks, and about 7 runs he gets pulled. Angels lose and CJ goes on Disney Radio to explain how the seams and logos on the playoff balls were what messed him up.

Instead of simply admitting that for the umpteenth time in his career he went through a patch where he couldn’t throw the ball where he wanted to.

Weird

I like C.J. Wilson, and for the most part I thought his “Post Season” struggles were a bit overblown. He got shelled in his first start, and rained out in the middle of his second. Other than that, he was fairly solid.

He also didn’t screw over the Rangers, he pitched in every role for the team. He didn’t even sign for some insane crazy outrageous amount. The Rangers just elected to not sign him.

I for one hope C.J. does well with the Angels, as I like the guy. I totally applaud him for coming to this site and reaching out to the fans. I hope the Rangers do better, but seeing him do well wouldn’t be bad either.

Feldman's WAR was 0.3

So if you factor in CJs 5.9 and round off the decimal, then we would have won 90 games last year and still won the AL West by 4 games.

There are some other arguments to make

Do you think Feldman could have given you that many innings? If not, is a taxed bullpen as effective?

But still, I think Feldman would have been adequate enough. And really you can’t just sub in Feldman’s WAR. If Feldman was a starter, he would have gotten more innings and more WAR more sure. Helps your argument.

I think this is a misuse of WAR

I would not feel confident that actually taking C.J. and replacing him with a replacement level player would be an exact 6 win loss in record.

There is a ripple effect that as I’m typing ab03 has already pointed out above.

I think it’s possible we still win the division without CJ… but I don’t think it’s guaranteed. I’d give it maybe 50/50 we win the division without him.

Truth. This is the problem with WAR

It assumes that Feldman would be his logical replacement. However, Feldman wasn’t totally healthy until the second half of the season. Who would have gotten those starts? Another unknown is whether or not JD would have ninja’d a starter at the deadline. Still, there is a 10 game difference between us and LAAAA. I think we come out on top.

According to CJ, it's because he was tired and had personal problems.

The tired part might help put to rest how Wilson keeps himself in so much better condition than any other pitcher out there, at least?

Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.

by Snark on Feb 17, 2012 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

Not necessarily.

He was the only pitcher on the staff who didn’t get extra rest down the stretch, and he was at ~225 IP going into the playoffs. Even if you’re conditioned at superman levels, there’s going to be some level of fatigue there.

by LiamP on Feb 17, 2012 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

OK.

If the line was simply that Wilson’s level of success was due to via superior physical conditioning and mental preparation, that would be one thing. But there were a number of arguments that those factors would help Wilson accomplish things we wouldn’t/shouldn’t expect from a pitcher of his caliber. I’m not arguing the point to lessen Wilson’s accomplishments: they’re real and significant. But (as one example) Chris Carpenter is 36 years old, pitched more innings than Wilson two seasons in a row, and out-pitched him in the post-season in 2011.

I really have no quantifiable way of identifying how important his level of conditioning was to his performance, but I’d say that he kind of validated those arguments. It’s not particularly easy to jump from 73 innings to 228 innings, and he did it without significant velocity droppage during the course of the season and without sustaining any significant injuries that year or the next. Carpenter’s remarkable, but this is a guy who’s been starting and logging huge innings (700 in a 3 season stretch in ‘04-’06) for years now.

I'm torn

All of his excuses were reasons why you should never have to worry about the next start. Even the excuses from the article make it seem like the Angels don’t need to worry about them this year (family problems should be cleared up, fatigue shouldn’t be as much of a factor since he’s used to it now).

The thing is, if it’s not mechanical and just mental, then you kind of want him to be a little oblivious and compartmentalize the bad starts as nothing to really worry about. In that respect, I didn’t mind CJ not dwelling on the bad starts. But then again, it’s also nice when a player beats himself up over a bad start a little. Seems like a fine line. Publicly you need to acknowledge the bad starts without excuse, privately you just need to get over it however you can. And for some players, it seems like they might actually get better if they do beat themselves up over bad starts.

When is Cutting Vernon Wells the Bargain?

Outfielder Vernon Wells is owed over $60 Million and had the worst offensive season by a major league outfielder as measured by OPS since the Roosevelt administration… the TEDDY Roosevelt administration. His mere presence in the outfield blocks Mike Trout. His right handed bat at Designated Hitter is less desirable than Abreu batting Left or Morales switch hitting. His speed, range and arm are subordinate to fringe fifth outfielder Jeremy Moore and everyone above that on the depth chart. It is really that lousy

Of course, the big problem with his analysis at the time was that he didn’t really factor in Burnett’s health; and it turned out Burnett has been pretty healthy, just not good. That article is pretty interesting

using $5.5M/WAR strictly based on the FA class, meaning he wasn’t necessarily going for value overall but market value at the time. His estimate of Burnett’s 2009 WAR was spot on (3.3 vs. 3.5) but he just couldn’t predict the complete shit show after 2009.

Confused

why would Burnett accept a trade to the Pirates and not the Angels?

Now I am seeing it is a limited no-trade clause

Would he really have a NTC that includes the Angels and not the Pirates?

And now I see

that his wife is afraid of flying, so the NTC likely only involved West Coast teams.

I hope everybody enjoyed this.

Really? I figured she would be more afraid of earthquakes

and falling into the ocean while being burned by flaming hot lava shooting out from the La Brea tar pits.

Well that's interesting

That rotation isn't half bad, now that I look at it.

Bedard, Burnett, Karston, Morton, not sure the other guy.

They just need some bats.
