Groundhog Day Rangers stuff

Happy Groundhog Day everyone. I hope you're enjoying your day off (everyone gets this holiday off of work, right?).

If you want Rangers news this morning, you're out of luck.

Richard Durrett continues his positional previews by looking at the Rangers' DH position.

That's it.

Dear Roy Oswalt:

Please make up your mind. I’m tired of concerning myself with the ramifications of you joining the Rangers.

Sincerely.
A concerned fan.

Agree...

If Raffy would have just admitted to it and said something like.. “I only did it once later in my career to help me recover more quickly.” He would not carry as much of a stigma. His body never looked roided up like Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, etc. But his finger wagging at Congress has made him look bad. The stigma on everyone who admitted using has been mitigated.

by Topgun22 on Feb 2, 2012 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

the finger wagging was a bold gambit but would have been a great move had he been able to avoid that last drug test result. Just needed to be smarter after the wagging.

by ab03 on Feb 2, 2012 9:28 AM CST up reply actions

I think Raffy roided to stay on the field

while some others roided to set records.

I moved down to the end of the Rangers dugout for the last two innings

of a game with the Mariners in late 2009. Vizquel was sitting at the very end of the dugout, and the guy in the row in front of us kept harassing him to take a picture with his kid while the game was still going. Vizquel told him to wait until the game was over, and turned back toward the plate. The guy was furious. Seconds later, Vizquel signed three balls (including his phone number) and rolled them across the top of the dugout to the three maybe 22 year old women sitting right behind the dugout. The guy went ballistic, called him a whore. High comedy.

OK, create your own stat.

Take your top five favorite stats and weight them however you want to, and come up with a total, and compare it to all Rangers who have over say 300 at bats, or however many you want to. And see if Michael Young comes out number one in your own newly created statistic. And have fun doing it!

Anything but catcher is mostly fine I think

Of course, you can get deeper into things for a specific argument, but in general it does a good job.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"

Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."

by Gdawg on Feb 2, 2012 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

using WAR to compare a SS

to a RF is almost useless. Totally different skill sets for the players. Someone like Elvis’ WAR is primarily based on defense and baserunning which is not as well difined statistically as offense.

by RangerMad on Feb 2, 2012 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

Defense might not be

but we have a pretty good idea on what’s going on with baserunning.

As for the defense, the specific UZR/DRS a player gets isn’t that much of a factor in their WAR that it can completely skew the results most of the time. Elvis last year was only worth 7 runs defensively and would be a 3.8 fWAR player if he was neutral defensively instead of 4.5 fWAR. The major difference though is the positional adjustment. +7 defensive runs as a SS is valued more than +7 defensive runs as a RF and that’s where the difference comes.

I think there’s a good argument for the specific positional adjustment values, but I think they’re mostly right within a few runs. This is why I don’t have a problem comparing a power hitting RF to a speedy, defensive SS. They gain their value in 2 separate ways, but that is taken into account with the WAR formula.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"

Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."

by Gdawg on Feb 2, 2012 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

offense is pretty much offense

but grading of defense and baserunning is too subjective imho

by RangerMad on Feb 2, 2012 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

Baserunning is not that subjective

At least, no more subjective than offense. Going first to third is just as much in the runner’s control as stretching a single into a double.

by ab03 on Feb 2, 2012 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

There's not that much subjective about baserunning though

Baserunning is just calculated from run expectancy charts basically. You can disagree with the method, but its not a subjective stat.

There’s an argument for defense, but you’re also talking about what is most likely a small difference. Usually, the defensive stats will disagree on exact run totals, but I think there is more often than not an agreement on whether or not a player was above average or not.

For someone like Elvis, if he wasn’t worth 7 runs defensively last year and was worth only 3 or maybe he was worth up to 10 runs, that won’t have a huge effect on his final WAR. He’ll still get that ~7 run positional adjustment as a SS just like a RF gets docked something like 7 runs. That’s where the big inherent difference comparing a RF to a SS comes from and I get the argument against it. It just has little to do with how their defense grades out.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"

Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."

by Gdawg on Feb 2, 2012 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

I know

but you’re likely talking about a difference of a few runs and nothing that drastic one way or another. Excluding the top few and the worst few, you are usually left with something like something in the range of something like -10 runs to maybe +15 runs.

If we were comparing the worst defensive RFs to the best defensive SSs, that can make a bit more of a difference maybe, but the positional adjustment between the 2 is still around a 15 run swing. Usually the defensive swings you’re talking about are maybe 10 runs or so and that doesn’t mean that it is an undeserved swing.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"

Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."

Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

by knockoutking on Feb 2, 2012 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

Say what you want about WAR

but its mostly just a collection of various advanced metrics. If you don’t want to look at WAR specifically, that’s fine but it really doesn’t change how I would rank the players. Kinsler, Beltre, and Napoli were clearly the much better players just when looking at standard stats and applying a little bit of sense.

Elvis’ value was mostly derived from defense and baserunning as a SS, so you could argue some there that Young was the better player, but I would disagree with that. Hamilton’s is mostly a question of playing time and how much you want to discount on the field performance for time missed.

As for the pitchers, its very subjective to try and compare the value of a pitcher to the value of a position player, but I think we can agree that CJ at least was more valuable than Young last season.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"

and il always take a guy who hits in clutch situations with a lower war..over a guy with a higher war but spits the bit when the money is on the table..alot of players drive for show..but its the putt for dough guys that should go to Cooperstown in my opinion

by capps1 on Feb 2, 2012 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

Then what you want is win probability (WPA)

Young was 3rd by that metric, although he was 6th in WPA/LI which further takes into account the leverage of the situation.

Also, did you see Young in the playoffs. Talk about spitting the bit when the money is on the table.

im not a MY maniac..MVP and all that

but we would have been in trouble without him..and he was our best clutch hitter thruout the yr ..see Kinsler is the one for me..he has all the WAR stats..and all that..but when we needed a clutch hit it wasnt him i wanted up..Beltre, MY, Nap..whereas i think Ian is very good 2b..i dont want to pay what i believe he is gona want..esp compared to Kendrick’s contract and i consider him a comparable player

by capps1 on Feb 2, 2012 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

There's plenty out there on the actual clutch ability

if you want to look into that. I think WPA is the best we can get at determining how much a player helped his team win in an abstract way. I just wouldn’t consider it over WAR and the various stats taken into account by WAR or that can be used to get more clarity (like LD%, BABIP, etc).

With that said, I’m not looking to get into any kind of discussion based on a gut feeling that the best player on the team wasn’t the guy you wanted up there when we needed a hit. Who knows how much he wants to be paid, but that’s especially silly considering your apparent faith in Young and the contract he’s on.

Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"

What stat...

takes into account a player who played multiple positions all season long in order to help out other teammates?

by Buddy Smokes on Feb 2, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

First of all, he did it because the Rangers didn't find a trading partner for him

Not because of some sort of selfless act to help his teammates.

And WAR takes into account Young playing multiple positions. That’s the positional adjustment in the WAR formula. Similar to most logically sound people, it doesn’t give him super extra bonus points for doing what his team told him to do. Even if he played 14 games at 2B and filled in at 3B when Beltre got hurt.

Somebody had to carry the load at 2B when it was time for Ian to rest.

Somebody had to play 3B when Beltre broke down during an especially critical time of the season that also happened during the hottest summer evah.

And he also learned how to play 1B / DH all the while hitting .3motherfucking38 for a team that won 96 games.

Traffic isn't even remotely higher on the OT thread.

More comments does not equal more traffic. Very rarely does an OT thread even come close to a front page post in numbers of readers. People just leave it open all day and Z to the next comment.

No it really isn't.

The OT threads get a tiny fraction of the readers that front page posts do. KOK’s point is that JW drives people to the OT or away from the site and is using the volume of comments as an indicator… that is completely incorrect. It may be true for some… but that would be a small minority.

I think the OT threads would be the way they are regardless of JW… same with the front page posts. I think his presence has a pretty minimal impact on actual readers other than some may comment less on front page posts.

It's all about how page views are calculated.

Sitting in one thread and letting it refresh automatically is still only one page view. So the people that camp in the OT threads all day, as I bet most of us do, are still relatively minor parts of the overall total.

The real meat of this place’s traffic comes from people that click through the articles, stories, fanposts, and fanshots, but don’t necessarily post.

Holland with a Korean professional baseball player

The guy next to Holland plays for the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization. He had TJS and was rehabilitating in Surprise where his team’s spring training camp is located. Apparently Holland followed him around asking if he could have his cap but the guy at first avoided Holland thinking he’s some random dude. After he found out who Holland was, he met up with Holland and gave him the cap and had a friendly chat. Apparently Holland goes around wearing that cap claiming he’s a Nexen player.

EJax ----> Nats

I like him for them actually… of course it all depends on the contract though.

by DShep on Feb 2, 2012 12:48 PM CST reply actions

That's a pretty salty rotation.

Strasburg, Zimmerman, Gio and EJax.

I wonder what they paid… I’m going to guess… 3 years, $33M.

supposedly its just 1 year 8-12 million

I kind of wanted to see it be longer if you could get him at a low cost, but obviously 1 year is very very safe and there will be others to bid on.

by DShep on Feb 2, 2012 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

8-12 is a pretty big range

but that’s actually pretty good. Much better than I thought he would get.

by ab03 on Feb 2, 2012 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

It's perfect for them

If they aren’t competing come July, they can ship him for prospects.

Nats have done a good job this offseason, despite overpaying (imo) for Gio.

I guess you could argue that

But by them signing him to that extension that makes giving up that much a lot easier to take.

by bigsteve on Feb 2, 2012 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

I agree.

Let's have rough predictions for the AL East

Phillies 92-70
Braves 87-75
Nationals 86-76
Marlins 82-80
Mets 74-88

I think the Marlins are going to fall a little flat. It feels too forced… that’s all gut though. They have more talent than 82 wins probably.

Did I say they wouldn't somewhere?

I know I thought the Rangers had a better chance RE: Prince… but getting Strasburg for possibly a whole season and Gio takes a decent team and makes them fairly interesting.

And if Danny Espinosa takes another step forward...

And Zimm stays healthy

I misremembered

You just said that 91 wins was high with Nats + Prince.

by Jobu. on Feb 2, 2012 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah... it's not impossible.

But I don’t think he’d be a massive upgrade over what they’ve got. Maybe 2-3 wins.

x

Phillies 96-66
Braves 93-69
Nats 86-76
Marlins 79-83
Mets 72-90

So, I agree completely with your ordering of the finishes.

Did the Braves do anything this offseason?

Not much comes to mind.. trading away Lowe.

I hope Heyward can stay healthy and get his swing back.

by DShep on Feb 2, 2012 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

Signed Jack Wilson as their UIF

A guy I would have liked to have at the price (1/1MM)

We really could have used him

Speaking of which, are we doing anything to get our LOOGY and that UIF who can play SS?

by RangersfaninROK on Feb 2, 2012 1:43 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Hell if I know.

I’m quite surprised we haven’t signed Gonzalez at this point. I assume the UIF will come from some minor trade in early March.

Gonzalez may want too much money

or he is not completely healthy. He made $6M last year. What is the going price for a LOOGY?

I have an mlb.tv question...

If I buy a subscription and am living in Austin, will I be subject to blackout rules?

If so, what are they exactly?

by TexasTiger70 on Feb 2, 2012 1:42 PM CST reply actions

Yes

You won’t get to watch any games live on there that involve the Rangers or Astros.

by Adam J. Morris on Feb 2, 2012 1:47 PM CST up reply actions

Welp

That’s just silly. When I graduate and move back to Texas I don’t plan on getting a TV package, but just using the internet for my streaming needs. I would have gladly paid MLB.tv a subscription fee, but seeing as how I will have a 60 hr/week job, I won’t be able to go to hardly any games at all.

Any ideas on how I can watch the games real time?

by TexasTiger70 on Feb 2, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

stream aggregators

like justin.net, wiziwig, firstrowsports, atchde.net (?), etc

by Goyogringo on Feb 2, 2012 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Yes

it sucks. They are archived though.

by Goyogringo on Feb 2, 2012 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

So I just had an idea.

I’m currently in NJ, so would it be possible to buy the subscription here and then watch the games in TX later this summer? Or do they check IP addresses and other such internet wizadry to preven that from occuring?

by TexasTiger70 on Feb 2, 2012 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

I believe they try to check the actual location of your device.

They have been good at figuring out where my phone and laptop were — a move from Baltimore to Chicago didn’t keep me in the Baltimore/DC blackout zone.

They check both your...

credit card address and the IP address when you access the game. Last year, I used TOR to spoof my IP address and paypal to pay, so that’s how I got around it.

brilliant.

I keep meaning to take a look at the universe of TOR.

by Goyogringo on Feb 2, 2012 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

If I'm not mistaken

I believe they patented this dual detection process.

by ab03 on Feb 2, 2012 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

you mean

to thwart a benmor-like stratagem?

by Goyogringo on Feb 2, 2012 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

Well

not to thwart Ben’s, since he found a way around it. But to thwart my previous ones where I also relied on a Baltimore mailing address while living in Chicago.

At one point, there fix for this was that you just needed to provide a land line number (they could check if it was a cell phone or a land line) and they would call you to verify that you were actually in that city. I wonder if they still allow that.
