Josh Hamilton relapses

Per the DMN, among other places, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was spotted consuming alcohol in a bar this week.

A ballplayer drinking in a bar would normally, of course, be a non-story, but given Josh Hamilton's history of substance abuse, he's been outspoken about avoiding drugs and alcohol.

This relapse comes at a time when the Rangers and Hamilton are supposedly talking about a long-term contract extension, which would keep Hamilton from becoming a free agent at the end of this season.

Along with the issue of Hamilton's history of health issues, Hamilton's past history of substance abuse is a concern that comes into play in determining how much to commit to Hamilton, and for how long.

A Rangers spokesman acknowledged the existence of a "situation," but said nothing else about what is going on, and all we really know at this point is that Hamilton was reportedly drinking.

Stay tuned...

Impossible and sickly..

All I can think is this helps the Rangers if they pursue longterm deal.

Human side though, awful…just awful.

I have to hope that once his baseball career is done,

he’ll find ways to keep himself in recovery. I wonder if leaving the stresses of baseball behind might not actually help, in some ways…

yea while stressfull you got to think it keeps him just as distracted and he also has the club house to help keep him on track as well as his family.

by MoralesHomers on Feb 2, 2012 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

His family's not going anywhere when he retires.

One question is whether he can find another “distraction” that doesn’t carry the concomitant stresses of baseball. There are an awful lot of things he can be doing that won’t have his performance out in front of millions of people everyday for months on end. The Stone tragedy couldn’t have been at all easy for him…

The other question is whether he can find a substitute for the clubhouse support network (however strong that is, or not — we don’t really have much of a sense of that, I don’t think).

I’m not saying that either question will be easy to answer. I’m hoping, for Hamilton’s sake, that he can find answers to them.

by Snark on Feb 2, 2012 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

No doubt.

Wasn’t saying that or not trying to. My point was is the Club house and the distraction of baseball wont be there and that will only make it harder. Key as you said will be finding another distraction that is healthy.

by MoralesHomers on Feb 2, 2012 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

Again, I don't know how much of a net positive baseball is to Hamilton,

from a mental health perspective, or how much of a support structure the clubhouse provides him.

I could see the potential, 25 years down the line, for him giving an interview in which he talks about how amazing his run in baseball was, but how important getting out of the spotlight and daily performance pressure have been to his continued sobriety.

It’s just very hard to say.

For all we know right now, the "something" was that he was drinking in moderation & behaving himself.

And before anyone responds with the “addicts can’t control themselves” thing, I’ll tell you now that I’m not going to care or respond.

by blakethegr8 on Feb 2, 2012 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

You can not care

But does the fact that he has so much to lose yet said eff it and drank in public view not seem like a sign at all?

by elchicodelgado on Feb 2, 2012 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe, or maybe not.

I’m just not going to change my opinion on the guy because I heard he had some beers.

Now if it turns out to be worse than that, then it’s a huge concern. But for now, I’m reserving any kind of judgment.

by blakethegr8 on Feb 2, 2012 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

So, it's not "until you hear something more than him being in a bar,"

but rather, “until you hear something more than him being in a bar and drinking in moderation, behaving himself”?

People in recovery can addiction can often control themselves in some, even many, aspects of their lives. Those who do best in recovery tend to understand the areas in which they can’t control themselves. After Tempe, Hamilton said he realized he can’t control himself in terms of alcohol consumption. That’s a story. It doesn’t really matter if you care or respond…

Ok, non-story as far as I'm concerned.

I, perhaps incorrectly, assumed that the last clause was understood.

by blakethegr8 on Feb 2, 2012 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

Well, "non-story" and "I'm not passing judgment"

are sort of two different clauses.

I don’t much care about what people think of Hamilton’s morality, on a personal level. But I do care about what Hamilton reportedly being in a bar and drinking alcohol — even one drink — means for him and the Rangers.

Im drinking a beer now so that’s not the issue. The issue is that he knows he’s extremely scrutinized, he’s in a contract year so stands to lose millions and anything he does in public is sure to be reported yet he still “drank in a bar”.

He was at a bar (incredibly popular one at that) in the DFW area, with Ian Kinsler, making them instantly recognizable and under immediate scrutiny. That there were no pics to surface of him drinking almost immediately is a bit strange.

I had a friend who was an alcaholic

He never understood how I coiuld sit there and drink a couple of drinks slowly and take off. He would drink until he was buzzed out because it made him feel better. I understand that to a certain extent, but I’ve always been paranoid about hurting somebody when I’m drunk.

One day I heard he had a couple of glasses of champaign at a wedding reception. I was thinking, how could this happen because he drank for effect, not for taste. Optomistically I hoped he could handle moderation, but my guess is the likelyhood was about 10% that he was drinking in moderation and 90% or more that was just the beginning of a drinking binge.

In a certain sense, alcaholics are like people who are walking along the edge of a cliff. If you and I were near the edge of the cliff, we would have fear or at least a healthy respect of falling off the cliff. An alcaholic would be like somebody walking along the edge of the cliff, with no fear or respect of the danger. And still I feel this illustration is lacking. Hopefully Josh is away from his addictive substance and surrounded by those who love him.

Hada gut feeling that there was more to the story.

From what I hear, just about every recovering alcoholic falls off the wagon some times. Most who fall have the advantage of being able to do it and not have it blogged about and on TV and radio. I am assuming they stopped in for a meal.

I can’t imagine that they would stop there for any other reason considering Josh’s addiction and not needing to risk relapsing. I assume that Hamilton’s struggles with the desire to drink daily, so I am sure just being near alcohol makes resistance difficult. But he avoids relapsing until suddenly it occurs at a random time with a teammate that is aware of his situation. Just seems strange, going to have to wait until there is more info on this.

(3) Jeff Passan is a professional writer, and so he really needs to learn what “begs the question” means.

That wasn’t a “fantastic read.” In addition to its other flaws, the piece was poorly written, in fact. I’m surprised Kevin would give Passan the compliment — he’s usually able to spot the difference.

by Aqua on Feb 3, 2012 12:56 AM CST up reply actions

What other forms of speculation are going on?

I mean, other than the psychologizing, there’s this:

That long-term contract Hamilton wanted from the Rangers? Gone. It has to be. Already the Rangers had shown little inclination to lock up long-term a player who two years ago won the American League MVP award despite missing the final month. Texas, like most other clubs, fears Hamilton’s body, brittle from his years of drug abuse, won’t hold up. Whatever leverage Hamilton held is kaput, and only the madness of free agency will land him a payday.

Which is obviously speculative, but is not exactly a reach.

‘The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

‘The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.’

Alice was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. ’They’ve a temper, some of them — particularly verbs: they’re the proudest — adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs — however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That’s what I say!’

To his credit, Jeff Passan has a sense of humor.

I sent him a question via the link on his website page, and he answered it promptly.

The question was something along the lines of, “How long does it take a professional writer to learn how to use ‘beg the question’ correctly?”

His retort:

about 15 years into one’s career. I’m only 10 years in. Damn.

(And I’d fix it, but, well, that’d be cheating, wouldn’t it?)

My reply:

Just as there’s no crying in baseball, Jeff, there’s no cheating in online baseball writing — change it now, and nobody will be the wiser other than you and me (and Lone Star Ball’s late-night readers, and whoever else happens to catch it before emendation). And think about the good example you’d be setting for the kids who read the piece over their Frosted Flakes tomorrow morning…

More broadly, I have to say I’m in the camp manned by Ol’ Hoss and Jay Jaffe at the moment. I understand what you were trying to communicate, but the psychological speculation in the piece was overpowering. I say that less as a last-word critique than as a hope that you might revisit the situation with the critique in mind… there are more words that could be written on this, and it’d be fascinating to see what interviews with specialists on addiction (and, for that matter, people in recovery themselves) might have to say about the subject. I know you could do that piece justice.

Cheers,
JG

Josh is an adult man who made some costly mistakes in the past. I know some recovered alcoholics, who can go out and have a few beers or god forbid get drunk and not have it ruin their lives like it had before. Now Josh obviously had a major lack of judgement because publicly doing anything like this was going to blow up in his face.
