Craig Gentry OPS Over/Under Poll
With the ZiPS projections coming out for the Rangers recently, we are doing a series of polls asking folks to pick whether they think various players will go over or under the OPS that ZiPS projects.
ZiPS projects Craig Gentry to have an OPS of 643 in 2012.
Do you think it will be over or under that figure? Cast your vote...

New Tag Line?
Posted in another thread, but with all due respect Adam, bigger issue than Gentry is that it looks like we are in for another season of “hokey Texas”.
Heard on a Rangers commercial yesterday “Backyard of Texas”. What is that? What does it mean?
Somebody in an earlier post had the best line and a good look for a promotional tshirt giveaway, “Come And Take It” with the American League trophy in place of the cannon.
Backyard of Texas? That’s the best we can get from a back to back AL champion?
I hate the Texas Pride overkill as much as anyone
But I have to admit, the “Come and Take It” shirt idea is pretty awesome.
These make good pies.

What I've gotten out of the Rangers marketing campaigns
Texans are lame.
Or at the very least, the Rangers marketing department sure seems to think they are.
There's a fire in the city of pictures
Leaving nothing but ashes below
Rangers are in a unique position
With the Astros being so bad, we’ve got a shot at not only expanding our traditional texas base, but poaching off disenchanted Astros fans. I know people in East and South Texas who despise being forced to watch the Astros. With cable deals, and MLB TV packages, we’ve got a good chance of turning the Astros into a Houston only team, with the rest of the state into the Rangers.
Baseball's hard, guys. I mean, it really is. You can love it but, believe me, it don't always love you back. It's kind of like dating a German chick, you know?
That's about what I figure

I'm sticking with 100% over.
Honestly I think ZiPS is pretty close on all of them. It has good reasons for the numbers it pulls out.
So I might as well pick over on all and hope I’m right more often than I’m not.

only facing lefties
or mostly facing lefties, he’s definitely over
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Yeah, Gentry is hard to call just because I have no clue what his role on the team will be.
If we carry 2 CFers and Hambone is out in LF everyday then I think his numbers will be lower. If they just let him prove himself out there he could struggle. Still with what he brings to the table defensively I’d like to see him get a shot.
then Josh gets alot of time in CF

not really
when you have Borbon and Leonys to face righties as a platoon
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I want to see how each individual batter
fared against the top 25 pitchers in the league last season as a whole according to FIP. How can I make this happen? Thank you.
Jon Daniels > Nolan Ryan > awesome
that is...
against the 25 pitchers as a whole… not each individual member of the 25.
Jon Daniels > Nolan Ryan > awesome
Ah
I see that he didn’t exactly. But if you follow the steps that he said, you can actually do it with a pivot table. Do you know how to use pivot tables?
And honestly,
the pivot table may only get you so far. I think you can probably easily get totals (ABs, H, HR’s) but you might need to calculate the stats (FIP, ERA, OPS, wRC) yourself.
well how about this...
is there a way to find which players had the lowest variance from game to game during the 2011 season in the Hits category?
Jon Daniels > Nolan Ryan > awesome
Not very easily
At least, I’m not aware of how to do that. Seems like you would need the game log for each player.
The Rangers need to be careful about overexposing Gentry.... a .650 OPS just about right with him.
Does fWAR really think Gentry and his .693 OPS in 64 games was more valuable to the Rangers than Nelson Cruz was last year?

99% of the time
if someone, especially Josey, brought up a situation like this with fWAR, multiple posters would come swooping in with insults and stats know more than you arguments.

Would you say that Gentry comes with instructions?

I agree
It’s hard to see Gentry having half the value of Cruz yet he has a higher fWAR, solely on the merits of above avg defense. It’s not like Gentry was incredible in the field, and for that matter, Endy Chavez, who had an fWAR pretty much the same as Cruz.
For defensive metrics to be imperfect year to year, you’d think that the impact of defense might be a little less pronounced that it seems in this comparison
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Good defense compared to bad
I don’t doubt that Craig Gentry is a good defender but you have to wonder about Cruz.
But, aside from that, the main difference comes from wRC+ of Cruz and Gentry being 116 and 108. You would have expected that gap to have been a lot more but it wasn’t.
Cruz's OBP last year was pretty bad
His home runs were majestic and there were some memorable ones but overall his season was pretty disappointing.
Agreed but he also hit 29 bombs and his OPS was significantly higher than Gentry's.
This is a prime example of why WAR should not leaned upon so heavily for guidance.

Here's something easier to get mad about
Who do you think was a better offensive player: Elvis or Gentry. Purely talking rate stats so nothing to do with aggregate

Are ZIPS park-adjusted in any way?
A lot of the Rangers projections seem to be rather low. I could see .643 as a reasonable Gentry OPS in the median park, but it seems pretty low if half of his games are to be played at the Ballpark.
Not mediocre. Right about average
Heh. Perhaps if we grow that infield grass up a bit?

I think the JDT/Wails
marriage has officially run its course. Should we call in the “marriage smasher” to finalize the paperwork?
Stix has taken a time out on the relationship
so now we just have to break-up the torrid affair between BigSteve and Wails and we’ll have some nice clean threads to start the season, except for the BS part of course…
JDT never recovered from the Braggadocio Montage...the gift that keeps on giving.

JDT is the firestarter, Goyo.
We’re kicking around Great Game Talk and he swoops…check that…waddles in here with a cute little “Does he come with instructions?” jab trying to shit up the thread and then throws up his dress (“Stop stalking me…”).
This is a man who went to a fabulous private school and made wonderful grades. He wears $ 250 ties and has stayed at several 5 Star hotels across the world. For crying out loud, he’s played golf at the Caracas Country Club!!! All that and he’s still a firestarter who still isn’t ashamed to throw up his dress.

I do not respond to him, and haven't for several months now.
I clarify the record when it needs to be clarified. And ridicule his idiocy when it needs to be ridiculed.

I'm thinking about .650 (above)
I just didn’t want to agree in the above thread. I expect little or no power production, with a few doubles and triples in the mix. Hopefully, he’ll get on base enough to be above the zips projection.
With Gentry, OBP is all that matters to me
A great glove and obp is all we need. He’s a pest on the basepaths and never gets thrown out stealing.
Hopefully Martin turns it on this srping and we’ve got a real nasty platoon combo, and thus another OF for Josh and Cruz’s DL stints.

Over not because I think ZiPS underrates him, but because I don't think he'll see many lefties.
Under (like, barely) if he’s the full-time CF just because I don’t feel like looking at other systems and I pick Over too often.
