Tuesday Morning Rangers Update

Pitchers and Catchers. Tomorrow.

A lot of Rangers are in Surprise already, Yu Darvish is not one of them yet. However, as Richard Durrett writes, Darvish has already met a baseball player he'll soon become plenty familiar with.

On the DMN blog, Evan Grant has shared a few paragraphs of a behind-the-paywall piece examining the Darvish pandemonium that is about to descend upon Spring Training.

T.R Sullivan has notes about Charley Pride, Tim Purpura, and the handful of position players already in camp. Sullivan mostly writes about Matt Harrison saying he is ready to fight for his spot in the rotation, though.

Jeff Wilson has his own notes about Mike Napoli saying he will be 100% by opening day and on Matt Harrison not feeling complacent after a breakout 2011 season.

EG had a chat session on the DMN website yesterday. Here's Grant's take on how Darvish will fare in 2012 and here's his answer to a question about the lineup order, among other questions answered.

Durrett writes about the Rangers signing LHP Neal Cotts to a minor league non-spring training invite deal.

Finally, Robbie Griffin over at SB Nation Dallas-Ft. Worth writes about how it's a darn ol' good time to be a Texas Rangers fan these days.

I agree that bieng down about it makes you miss the bigger picture.

I consciously try to be optimistic and not dwell on the WS losses. But our sports society lives for and loves the ring and anything else is not quite good enough. The tagline supports that line of thinking, and it’s so indoctrinated in me that it will always sting.

I really like Johny Oates. I wish more legendary things could’ve come out of that 5-yr period.

I also kept trying to think hard if any players/teams were truly notable in baseball history before Pudge. Those teams had colorful guys and some good players. But, you’re right, the impact of Texas Rangers on baseball history is very meager until the present.

B-R

They have stats that show how batters do against ground ball/fly ball pitchers.

Poor wording on my part

I want to see a database of how individual batters performed last season against a group of pitchers of my choosing.

So

You could use BR and put that spreadsheet together yourself. How big is your group of pitchers?

by ab03 on Feb 21, 2012 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

Will include the top 25

pitchers according to FIP. I want to see how each individual batter in the league performed against this group. How can I make that happen?

by dstar442005 on Feb 21, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

1. Create a spreadsheet with 25 sheets, one for each pitcher.

2. Look up the top 25 pitchers by FIP for the year(s) in question on FanGraphs.
3. Go to this page for each of those 25 pitchers and the desired years, and fill out your spreadsheet by using the “CSV” function.

This assumes you don’t have your own database, of course. And there might be an easier way to do this — but this would probably be how I’d do it.

Thank you for this.

Can you tell me or link me to more about the CSV function? I am very ignorant when it comes to spreadsheet operations.

Also, is there a way that I can get the Swing and Contact data that FanGraphs has for each batter against the 25 pitchers as a whole? (Along with basic statistics?)

The CSV link on B-R allows you to export the data as a comma-delimited file.

Then you can import that into your spreadsheet software. It’s not complicated — you could Google it and find some YouTube instruction, I imagine…

Doing what you’re talking about in your second paragraph would, from what I know, be complex without your own database. I don’t think either FanGraphs or B-R is set up to do that — but maybe there’s another way or source. matchst1ck might know, or philkid3, or ab03…

Darvish

I am really glad the Rangers went out and got Yu but I think I am going to get tired of the constant media swarm really quickly. According to Evan, they are already hounding the guy who caught his throwing session today.

Maybe they are asking the catcher

if some sonic tots came in along with with the baseball.

Yeah, I don't mind it
Martinez said that the right-hander kept the ball down for most of the 30 pitches. Martinez was impressed with Darvish’s two-seam fastball, cut fastball and split-fingered fastball. Martinez estimated that Darvish threw at 70 to 80 percent of full strength, but pumped the last couple pitches at around 92 or 93 mph.

Darvish also apologized when he missed his spots.

“I was telling him, "It’s OK. You’re just warming up. It’s your first bullpen,’ " Martinez said. "He threw sliders, curveballs, changeups, splits. He threw 30, and within those 30, there were about 10 different pitches.

Heard the new tag line?

Heard it on The Ticket yesterday on a Rangers commercial.

“The Backyard of Texas”. What? What does this mean?

I would rather somebody send Chuck Morgan that Come And Take It graphic in this thread and that be the tag line and put it on a tshirt for a give away.

Backyard of Texas. Horrible and I am sure we will hear it all season long.

I want them to play the MY TEXAS MY RANGERS

thing again this year. That was pretty cool… at the games.
