What team had the best offseason? (Poll)
Just throwing this out there, after having a hard time answering this question myself...
What team had the best 2011-12 offseason?
I'm leaving Texas off the list, because, well, we're a bunch of homers (well, I'm not, but you guys are)...
And when I say "best," I mean, best in the overall big-picture scheme of things, factoring in contracts taken on and given up, prospects added and subtracted, etc.

Moreno's an incredible owner.
One potential albatross contract given to the best hitter of our generation isn’t going to sink their chances for competing in the future.
Incredible owner how?
As in he has deep pockets and isn’t afraid to use them? I don’t disagree, I’m just curious what you mean exactly.
Incredible in just about every way...he had help from McCourt but So Cal now belongs
to the Angels. That franchise never touched 3 million in attendance until Moreno arrived and they’ve never been below 3 million with him as their owner.
He knew what to do after 2003, he signed Vlad & Colon…that seemed to work out pretty well (5 AL West titles in 6 years).
He not only signs his own ace (a Boras-repped client) 1.5 years before he hits free agency but he signs the ace of his closest rival and the best hitter of this generation.
Arte Moreno is one of the best owners in professional sports.

Let it never be said that I can't admit when you're right.
The trade was still a bad trade because everybody and their mother (not named Moreno) could see that Wells was due for a regression and would not be worth that contract, but it does indeed look like that contract did not limit them in any serious way in the near term. Perhaps CJ/Pujols contracts didn’t get structured in an ideal way, but the fact that the Angels signed with them means that Wells did not have as much of a negative effect as I (very strongly) believed that it would.

Nobody knew Wells was going to fall that far...I could see regression but what happened
to him was other-worldly. I’d expect him to come back without Pujols in the lineup but now that Pujols is there…I’d guess Wells knocks out 25 bombs and nudges his OPS close to .800.

I think in the end, they will regret it.
I question his fit in that ballpark. He was awesome at home, and meh on the road. The numbers weren’t materially different at home vs. road either. I see that saying, he is what he is – a 3/4 starter. They paid too much for that kind of return.

Hes moving to a much easier league though
Which will negate some of that
I think he could easily put up 200+ innings of above league average ERA in Washington as their #3 for the next 5+ years.
Washington gave up some nice pieces no doubt but also got back a really nice player in return who fits into both their present and future plans for possible success
Strasburg, Jackson, Zimmerman, Lannan and
Wang among others. I see at as only incrementally getting better and they paid a bunch to do it. It SORTA is like the Oswalt situation with the Rangers. Granted, it should make them better this year. I just wonder about the ‘13 and beyond. I’ve kind adopted them as my NL team.
Best Minor League System in baseball, Best Overseas scouting in baseball, Best Front Office in baseball, and, of course, the Moneypenis™ Jorge C 1/28/12
Well they didn't have Jackson at the time
And Gio is a 26 year old established lefty. Its quite possible he is going to get better as he enters his prime years whereas Oswalt would only be a 1 year deal here.
Gio solidified the Nats at the time the deal was made for 2012 and then is going to be there for, as it turns out, at least 4 more years after that.
And while they did give up a big package of prospects they still have Harper and Rendon. They only gave up 1 offensive prospect in the Gio deal the rest being pitchers. Which, now that they have a rotation under control for several years like the Rangers, wont hurt them in the long haul that much.
Fair enough
It just comes down to GG’s ceiling which I see lower than you. However, the farm could afford it as Rendon and Harper are still there. I bow out.

1) Reds 2) D-Backs
Looking at now AND long term I gotta says Reds then Diamondbacks. The Reds traded from a surplus (1B and C prospects, when they have Votto and Desmeroco) and acquired a #1 or #2 in his pre-prime, while he is still cheap and under control for 3 or 4 more years, plus they got a top notch closer for one year with a team option on a low cost deal.
Arizona was able to trade just one of their higher level pitching prospects for a dependable #3 or with the potential to be better, who is young and under contract cheaply for the next 3 years. They still have Skaggs, Bauer, and Bradley, so losing Parker wasn’t a big hit.
Best short term adds would be the Angels, Tigers, then Marlins. Honorable mention to the A’s. They aren’t going to win in the next few years, so maximize value on their better veterans. They really improved their minor league talent and are in a position to be better when the Angels are starting their decent into overpriced, way too high budget mediocrity.

But the Angels, Yankees, and Nationals also did pretty well.
Not mediocre. Right about average
I'm not a big fan of the Marlins off-season.
They committed a lot of money, yes, but I wouldn’t say they are obvious contenders for the NL East. Unless they are able to flip those guys for a haul I don’t see it as being nearly as impactful as what teams like the Yanks/Angels/Nats did.
I would rank the Marlins as having one of the worst offseasons.

Really?
They overpaid a bit for Buehrle and Bell, but they are both very solid pitchers and the terms aren’t too onerous. The Reyes deal looks pretty reasonable in the aftermath of the Pujols and Fielder deals. Seems pretty solid to me, all in all.

Buerhle and Bell are average at best
and I’d say it’s even odds as to whether Reyes gets layed up with hamstring injuries over half the season.
Yankees add Pineda and subtract A.J. and 13MM of his remaining salary. They win the offseason.
Angels did the most to improve their team, but they wildly overpaid for a guy who has PED and age-related questions surrounding him.

I wasn't happy with Pineda going to the Yankees.
That will be a potential of strong pitching for a decade in New York. But I still voted for the Angels, mainly because I really don’t know what the long term contract situation is for the Angels. As Rangers fans many of us will assume it is bad, but they have a big cash flow between drawing over 3,000,000 per year and their new Fox Sports contract. At least this year they appear to be the most improved team, and that could have implications for a few more years. Eventually they’ll get out from underneath the Vernon Wells contract, and the Tori Hunter contract. Hopefully the Rangers will just keep beating them, and their improvement won’t matter that much.
Diamondbacks,
Hard to vote Angels, as they have noosed their future quite a bit in the last two seasons. & by doing so, still haven’t topped the supreme power in the West.

I voted Yanks
They completely overhauled their rotation from a weakness to a strength, and did it without spending loads of money. Then they off-loaded Burnett on the Pirates, which I still think is a good move even if they have to eat a big chunk of his salary.
I also think the Nats had a pretty good off-season and have a very strong rotation that should keep them in a lot of ballgames.
reason I cant vote Yanks is pretty much the same reason I wouldn't vote Rangers if they were a option
They didn’t do anything to address the upcoming departure of so many of their offensive players.
In fact they traded away their best offensive prospect even though they got back a very nice pitcher in return.
If this was just about 2012 then I could vote them, along with the Angels, but since this is supposed to be looking “big picture” I cant
The difference is that the Yankees have the ability to spend more than anybody else.
Most of the time, that’s going to be enough.

Who are the guys they'll have to worry about replacing?
Seems like key guys like Cano and Granderson will probably re-sign whenever their contracts are up, and with Tex and Arod sticking around for awhile, that’s a pretty good offensive core no matter what happens with their other players.
Cano and Granderson will likely be re-signed
But Cano will be 31 and Granderson 33 when their contracts expire.
Swisher is a FA after this season
Arod is in his decline phase and cant stay healthy
Tex will be 32 in early April
Jeter is gone after 2014 most likely
They may not “have” to replace guys but they will want to replace guys given their ages.

I find it so hard to fathom a Rangers team that does not score runs.
I mean, you have to go back to 1995 to find a team that didn’t score more than 780 runs in a season.
Tack on the fact that the pitching the team has going forward for many years won’t require many runs of support that most teams have been needing, I don’t see why losing an offensive player or two will really cripple the team. Waiting a year or two for a good FA to come available or allowing the farm/draft to produce some position players with bats won’t set this team back and keep them from contending.
Trades are also a decent bet and something you can’t really consider because of the complete randomness and luck needed for them to work.
The main positive about this team is the FO and their ability to continually build a competing team and improve. The Rangers have improved their wins the last 5 years, and while it won’t be sustained, that says something.

Do you feel like you should have?
A lot of people like them this year. I think I saw Vegas had them at 6-1 to win the World Series. I don’t really see. Maybe someone can lay it out for me.
Hey Heebs, we may have another spot open up in our LSB Keeeper league
If you’re interested send me an email and I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back from the current team owner.
sent you a reply
I’ll probably know for sure within the next few days
That's pretty crazy considering they haven't won the WS in over 100 years?
Plus they were pretty bad last year and didn’t do much to improve their actual roster so far. Adding Epstein will help in the long-term, but at the moment they aren’t actually any better.
I wonder if there’s somewhere you can bet on the Cubs not winning the world series.
I don't believe those odds are correct
60 to 1, maybe

I think I should have thought about them more than I did,
especially if you count Theo.

Mets
From the basis of generating intrigue in the off-season for their performance in the regular season. I love proverbial train wrecks, and I expect this to be spectacular.
I'm surprised the Angels won
guess there are a lot of people out there that don’t care about contract hostages.
I voted Marlins – Reyes, Buehrle, Bell, Zambrano, and a few other notables are VERY solid. But forgot about the Yankees acquisition of another 6’7 260+ talented pitcher (Pineda). Branyan and Ibanez are nice pickups; and trading Burnett is addition by subtraction.
"Look at our current situation with that camel f$%ker over in Iraq. Pacifism is not something to hide behind."
I voted Reds
I think they are a complete team now, and Pujols and Fielder are out of the division. NL Central looks there’s for the taking.
My World Series pick is Rangers-Reds.
