Wednesday a.m. Rangers things
Are you ready for some baseball? Pitchers and catchers report today, with the first workout coming tomorrow...
Evan Grant writes that the Ranger rotation has a lot of upside, but a lot of risk as well, due to the lack of experience of the rotation members.
T.R. Sullivan has a story on the Rangers starting spring training.
Ron Washington watched Yu Darvish throw a bullpen session yesterday, and he liked what he saw.
Jeff Wilson has a story on the arrival of Darvish at spring training.
Mike Adams threw off the mound yesterday, and was happy with the results.
Mike Napoli says his ankle, which he sprained in Game Six of the World Series, is still just at 80%, but he expects it to improve during spring training.
Richard Durrett runs through six items of note from yesterday at camp.
Drew Davison's notes talk about the addition of Kelvin de la Cruz and runs down the various injuries.
Anthony Andro's notes include quotes from Jon Daniels about Koji Uehara, Mike Napoli and Mitch Moreland taking batting practice, and the de la Cruz trade.
T.R. Sullivan's notes include stuff on Uehara, Colby Lewis and his contract, Wilmer Font, de la Cruz, and a minor league minicamp.

Bitter Sweet Day
I want to be excited for today, but I still feel like I’m shell shocked from Game 6.
Same here
I was hoping that the words “pitchers and catchers report today” would wash all the pain of game 6 away. It’s still there. And now also Naps ankle is still bad from game 6. What a nigtmare

No joke....80% after 3 1/2 months?
The bad part about those ankles is they can just linger, too…I hope he’s right that he will be 100% by opening day….

One could actually argue that one year of decreased production that results in us getting us more years of better production at a lower price is a net gain
But no, I’m not being serious.
I’m being anti-me.
It’s cute that you guys thought I was being serious, though.

when does a pitcher become "experienced" or a "veteran"?
We know where Colbly and Feliz stand on the experienced scale. And Darvish is really an exception. But what about Holland and Harrison? Derek has 63 starts and over 393IP in the MLs. He is coming off a season of 32 starts and 198 IP. Harry’s numbers are similar to Hollands: 62 starts and 411 IP. He had 30 starts and 185.2 IP last year.
Why the angst over the lack of experience in the roto?
I was thinking the same thing...
It’s not like there are 4 rookies in the rotation….I would say they are all veterans especially considering what they have all done over the last two seasons…and post seasons, for that matter…

blog chumming
consistency (and health) will be the critical issue this yea for everyone not veteranness
Veteranness is to some extent a euphamism for consistency.
At least it has the connotation of expected performance/behavior.
Anyway, on the point of veteranness, Holland is an interesting “veteran” in that his personality may never lend itself to the characteristic steady, determined affect of a “veteran”, like CJ had. He may become consistent, but may always thought of as goofball rather than a “veteran”.
Everybody needs somebody to love... I need Yu, Yu, Yu! I need Yu, Yu, Yu!
I hope I haven't offended the Blues Brothers with this.
league is full of inconsistent vets
Colby Lewis was one last year
whatever the case, EG is blog chumming, and the idea of veteranness interests me not
Yeah
Last year I could see the concern because both Holland and Harrison not only had little ML experience to begin with but very little success also.
But after last year while I think you can still worry about a drop in performance I dont think you can be worried about experience with either of those two

•The Yankees don’t expect Alex Rodriguez to be a vital part of their team four or five years from now, but there’s $143MM remaining on his contract, so the team needs to get as much value as possible from A-Rod.
he's under contract through 2017
so are they talking about the final year or two? That seems like a no-brainer. If we are talking value, the Yankees haven’t gotten value from that contract the past few years when they were paying him $30M+, and he was just an average player. He makes $29M this year.
Ha, doesn’t he feel the pressure of this contract? Where is his juice? You know he doesn’t operate well if he doesn’t have his juice in the morning! It goes so nicely with a big slam breakfast.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

“Matsuzaka got lots of outs his first year on swings on balls out of the strike zone,” Washington said. “The next year, guys just stopped swinging at that. Hitters adjusted quickly. Darvish can power the baseball by people I think. He’s got more weapons to make hitters have to work harder to adjust. A lot of the Japanese pitchers who have come over have relied on deception. He might be different.”

He’s taller, throws harder, and put up much, much better numbers than the other pitchers from Japan. Dice K was good in Japan. Yu was lights out.

Lights out would actually be an understatement
Halladay in MLB is lights out. Darvish in NPB was god-like. It’s like every single one of his last 5 season or so in Japan were NPB equivalents of Pedro’s 99 and 00 season.

Tony Fernandez? Weird role...
The Rangers have hired former Toronto All-Star Shortstop Tony Fernandez as a special assistant to GM Jon Daniels. Fernandez will be in uniform during Spring Training.
iirc
fernandez is HUGE in the DR.
maybe he is going to be working with the young latin shortstops?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

If he is as huge as KoK says down there, it could also be a way to influence player agents.

this may be the first kind of move like that with the rangers
i am sure teams are going to be attempting to do everything they can to get players attention down there and to sign with them for less than others are offering (like with what happened with Ynoa and others)

Sprained ankles can suuuck
I actually sprained mine playing hoops the very morning of Napoli spraining his. It was a wicked one and is still giving me problems. Though I’d say I’m 90%.
The problem with Naps and me, is that you’ve got to do nothing but sit on your ass for 3 full days. If not, it’ll go from a 6 weeks to 3 months. He kept playing and I went to a concert and tailgated/Game 6.
I sprained my ankle over the summer
and it still gets stiff every once and a while. Of course, I’m sure Napoli has had better treatment than I have.

So what you are saying is...
Napoli gets stiff and then needs treatment. Is that about right?
