I wish they weren't doing this
Not mediocre. Right about average
I bet he wanted to
Hamilton’s image is important to him. He does not lead a very private life. Even beyond being an athlete, he has put his recovery in a very public spotlight.

he called kinsler
Kinsler came and hung out with him, but Hamilton says he didn’t drink when Kinsler was there, Kinsler then brought him home or wherever he dropped him off, and Hamilton went back out after that. Did some things he regrets (no drugs), but says that’s personal

So far...
- He called Ian after he had a few drinks, then did not drink while Ian was there.
- Went to another place, for 25-30 minutes and Kins took him home.
- Kins asked him if he was going to go anywhere else, Hammy said he wouldn’t.. then he went out again a half hour later and drank some more.
- Said he was very discrete and noone saw him drinking in the 2nd, he was trying to hide it.
No drugs used, 2 drug tests since Monday.
Kins didn't take him home
He took him back to where his car was which was probably at the first restaurant they were at
this is what I don't get
when he went back out and had more drinks, usually you don’t get a heightened sense of alert. alcohol naturally does the opposite, and how did the media find out what happened if no one saw him drink?
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Ugh...this is excruciating
He talked about how he can be sneaky when he wants to drink. He picked up Ian, they talked. Ian went home, asked him “you aren’t going back out are you?” He said, “no” and of course he did go back and went drinking again. Yikes.

I mean, it’s not a good thing. But at no point is he downplaying anything he’s doing. In his mind, it’s all very bad and he’s let a lot of people down. If anybody wants to heap more criticism against him, he seems willing to take it.

Addicts lie to everyone
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
Huh?
I suppose he could be lying in the press conference, but I meant they lie to the people closest to them constantly, and to everyone else about their addiction.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
But not really surprising!
You probably won’t drink in front of people that don’t want you to drink, like Kinsler, but if you want a drink bad enough, you will lie, and you will find a way to get some booze. Is it distrubing, maybe it is somewhat. But I don’t think it’s particularly surprising.
That's not surprising in the least
and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he hasn’t had additional episodes that we don’t know about. This is what addicts do.

I think he was more annoyed at himself for drinking,
and he is a little annoyed at requiring himself to answer the charges or explain them publicly. But that is Josh, in my opinion. While he might lie to himself for awhile, he’ll try to avoid lying to his friends and family.
No, I got this vibe too.
But I read it as someone annoyed with himself, a 31-year old who needs to man up and be responsible to himself and his family. I wish I caught the exact “man up” quote, but he seemed to be scolding himself in front of the world there.
Exactly.
I doubt there is anyone in the world who wouldn’t be annoyed having to do what he did. No one likes to be paraded in front of the world every time they have an “oops” moment. He felt that he needed to though and I commend him for standing behind what he felt was the right thing to do.
Based off of the photo comment and the "regrets" that were personal
This sounds almost identical to the Arizona incident. I could be wrong on that, hopefully. Feel bad for the guy and hope he gets better, not much more to say about that.

If a rational discussion is going to be had, then contract discussions should be centered around what he would actually at least consider. For instance, if I said my best offer would be 3/36, that would (and should) be roundly ridiculed.

just different perspectives I guess
maybe
I found it a little disingenuous. It seems like he wants to do what he wants and he’s tired of people telling him that it’s bad for him to do it. That’s why he doesn’t want a new accountability partner.
Yeah
I don’t agree at all. I think you are putting your preconceived notions onto him (and I might have agreed with you given his seeming opposition to another babysitter).
But he said he needs to aggressively fight his addiction in the same way he plays on the field (paraphrase). I think he believes that. I think this incident proved to himself that he’s always going to be vulnerable and that it’s not ok to slip like this.
I'll have to watch it again.
Maybe it was his body language or something else I was picking up on that just made me feel like there was a disconnect between what he was saying and what he meant.
Or maybe it was just my preconceived notions…
I thought
that it was him just saying I wish we were having a press conference cause I had a new contract and not cause I did something I shouldn’t have (resulting in the relapse). Didn’t seem he was complaining at all about not having a contract but wishing he wasn’t in the position to have a PC for the reason he is.

he alluded to family problems a couple of times.
Briefly at the beginning and asked reporters to respect his privacy on that. So it sounds like some issues at home might have sparked the incident.
In any case, he certainly handled himself well.
I've wondered about this.
But didn’t want to speculate. But usually there’s a trigger beyond “seems like a good way to kill time”.

Sure.
And I shouldn’t have said usually. That’s based on my personal experiences… and I knew it might have nothing to do with that and didn’t want to suggest it since it’s one of many possibilities. But in my limited sample size… boredom was not the cause, stress from something was for a relapse.

Sometimes you can have some stress...
add a few moments of boredom, and you are headed out to be stupid, or at least that’s my experience.
For many...
Boredom can be the trigger. I’ve read a lot of biographies of entertainers that have had problems with alcohol and/or drugs and there seems to be two types: Those who can’t handle fame (Doesn’t seem like Josh), and those who cannot handle “down time.”

also him just deciding to go eat by himself. Probably means nothing but could cause then after he calls Ian so sorta seems maybe he went to eat and be alone and think. Ended up drinking some then called ian and they talked maybe about whatever was happening and it went from there.

I am agreeing with this!
Boredom can be the most counter productive of experiences, especially if you are an addict. The thought comes into your mind, wouldn’t it be nice if I could go out and have a bear and a hamburger, and if you follow through, you are having a drinking incident.
I hate speculating
But I was watching (well, reading on close caption at lunch) and I caught the reference to personal problem at the beginning and also he and Ian talking about family.

I imagine Ian would have known that Josh had been drinking, whether Josh admitted it to Ian or not.

Yeah
It’s not Ian’s responsibility to force him to stop drinking. I don’t even think he could have done that. It sounds like he showed up, asked him to stop, and showed that he was concerned. I don’t think Ian can be blamed, based on what we know.
Not mediocre. Right about average
He did, he said he was very good at hiding it when he'd been drinking
And Ian didn’t know. So we can only assume he wasn’t stinking drunk.

He said he had 3 drinks or so before calling Ian
It could be easy to not know someone has been drinking after only 3 drinks
but at the same time
is he just covering for Kinsler. It seems a bit strange to me. I hope that is not the case.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
First of all
I doubt he is covering for Kinsler. He probably thought three drinks, this may be getting out of hand, so he called a teammate he trusts.
Kinsler did what he could as a teammate, not being a trained alcahol counselor. After Kinsler drove him to wherever, Josh decided he wanted some more drink. I see nothing at all wrong with what Kinslder did. And again, if Josh would have just gone back to his sober life, that would have been a near miracle.
That's the second time today someone has spelled "alcohol" with two a's.

I'm not saying I see anything wrong with what Kinsler did
based on the story we were given. I think he acted as anyone should, again, based on what we were told
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I doubt Kinsler knew when they were having dinner that Josh had been drinking
He said they talked about baseball, life, family and then Kins dropped him off.
if there had been some family issue like Hamilton eluded to that may be what Kins was referencing when he asked Josh if he was going home.
Then Josh went back out, continued drinking, and either he called Ian to come get him or its possible Katie called Tess when Josh didn’t come home and thats how the ball got rolling.
I think Kinsler knew he had a drink or two before he got there.
Josh said himself that Ian asked him “You aren’t going to go out again after I drop you off, are you?” That would imply to me that Kinsler knew he already had a drink or two, maybe said something to him, and wanted Josh to reinforce that he wouldn’t go back out.
I suppose you could also say he was making sure Josh wouldn’t go out because they just finished talking about the personal problems and Ian knew Josh may want to blow off some steam by going back out.
I think the former is the case and Josh was just trying to absolve Ian of letting him go after knowing he had a drink or two.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
I think this is the most likely scenario
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Seems more like he drunk dialed Ian and just wanted to hang out
They probably had a good time, and when Josh’s buzz wore off he went back for more.
Could've been chewing gum. Just had a slight buzz going..Ian wouldn't have been looking for signs.

yes
otherwise why would Ian have tried to make sure he didn’t go back out
Well
that’s not exactly what Josh said. He said Ian asked if he was going out, right? I actually missed that part of the PC.
I shouldn't be speculating since I didn't hear it at all
I was just going on the recap in here.
I think it was
-He called Ian, maybe because of some initial guilt..or family issues that needed venting, whatever
-Went back to Ian’s car
-Ian asked if he was going back home, Josh said yes
-Josh did, then slipped back

From reading the transcript
He wasn’t staying at his house. He walked to a restaurant with a family member? And then Ian drove him back to ‘where he needed to be’. Just seems like he wasn’t staying at home that night.
And he says
‘For personal reasons I was with a family member’
reply to self
meaning he didn’t walk to a restaurant with the family member. He was staying with a family member (without a car) and walked to a restaurant alone. I’m speculating based on reading comprehension of course.
That's how I heard that as well
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
From listening live
It sounded like he said “For personal reasons, with a family member”…and i took that to mean reasons regarding a family member…
I wrote just what the transcript said
but I think we’re on the same page regardless of whether he was staying with a family member because of personal reasons or had personal reasons with a family member
i read that too
It just popped out at me as a possible mistake by the transcriptionist because it changed the circumstances of him not being at his home….
I say this only because the way I heard it (personal issue with family member leading him to not sleep at home) coupled with the change of heart by his stepfather leads me to wonder about the state of his marriage.
This is complete conjecture on my part.
It was his father-in-law, not stepfather.
The way I heard it is he was having a personal problem with a family member and went out alone because of it.
So just to offer an alternative
to the idea that he is fighting with his wife (which is what I think everyone is alluding to; though not saying explicitly), there is a post-op recovery hotel about 1/4 mile from Sherlock’s. He could have been, as he says, ‘with a family member for personal reasons’ and decided to go out. Again with the disclaimer of pure speculation and most likely 100% incorrect and not trying to start rumors of any sort.
Heard MLB radio talking with Fraley around lunch time
and he said that Josh’s wife had elective surgery (nothing serious) this week and that he was leaving the hospital and on his way home when he ducked into the bar. That was probably the “personal reason” he was referring to.
If you want some slack, bring your own rope.

This is painful to watch
Even if I didn’t have personal experience dealing with addicts it’d be painful to watch a man look so lost.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
I didn't quite take it like that
Seems like a person who is very aware the mistake he made and accepts the support system in place to rectify it. More painful would be to hear denial or not understanding what he could do fight it.
Of course, the more these slips keep happening, the more painful it will get.
I just meant
that even with all that in place, and his high degree of self-awareness, it’s a stark reminder of how little control addicts have over their disease. He just looks so weary, and even with all that he’s been through he is still facing soul-searching as he put it.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
Yeah
it’s a monkey on his back for sure. But lots of people have problems in their life. If you are problem free, kudos. But more than having the problem, seems like what makes a problem difficult is the frustration from feeling like you don’t have a solution to it.
Issues
we all have them, and we all cope in our own ways, I guess. Sometimes I get philosophical and just think we are all addicted to something, some coping mechanism to deal with the great questions we can’t answer in ourselves. For some it’s drugs, alcohol, food, sex, etc. For some it’s religion. Some have passionate hobbies that are retreats from the world or themselves, some work too much. All to differing degrees depending on how good we are at working through our issues.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
listing to it on the repeat of it
He does say unless I heard it wrong again that he didn’t do “dangerous” things but just did some “worrisome” things. So sound like he did something or whatnot he shouldn’t have but nothing overly stupid cause of his drinking.

I don’t think there ever has been.

"...out of the shadows of unprecedented success, the sun shines down upon this team waiting to thrill anew." - ghostofErikThompson
After reading the transcript...
I’m not that worried about Josh. Or at least… I’m not worried more than I was a month ago. While he did do something that sounds like he believes was foolish and unwise… he notified the team and MLB the next day again and owned up to it.
This will probably not be the last time he has a slip… I’m pretty proud of how seriously he treats even minor slip ups… it encourages me. So many others try and hide even a small mistake out of guilt or shame and it just gets worse and worse.

NO This is why i dont come here so much anymore. it has become a destination for certain types which i am not. Love the rangers, not this -- Mark from OC on Arrested Development
Just hope whatever problems he is having otherwise
don’t get too bad. As was discussed previously… you don’t need a motive to relapse, but it certainly won’t help if hes having a tough time at home.
I agree
but to add a touch of grey to it, you could make the argument that these press conferences only happen when he gets caught publicly (with pictures or witness accounts).
But even then, at least he knows that when he gets caught, he has to own up to it very publicly.
The press conference doesn't matter to me though.
It’s notifying the team and MLB. When he gets caught doing something and hides it from them… then I’ll be very concerned.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Add his family to that list of the Rangers & MLB.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Either way
you wonder if he only does it when he knows he’s publicly been caught.
Or maybe he does it every time he has a relapse but the Rangers only talk about it when he’s publicly been caught.
I'm guessing it's only talked about publically when he's been caught.
If he told the Rangers and MLB Tuesday, they knew about it before it broke by Fraley. And they definitely knew for like a month or so before Deadspin broke the last one with the pics.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Even so...
I’ve seen addicts who KNEW they were going to get caught try and lie about it.
And if he was hiding incidents from EVERYONE… I also think he probably would have relapsed hardcore by now because of how slippery that slope is.
All very speculative… but that’s my gut feel. I think he’s owning up to his employers and family because he knows he has to in order to stay right.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Yeah
I agree with this to a certain extent. But I also don’t like to compare Josh to my 20 year old college burnout addict friends (of 10 years ago). He’s a lot older and at this point could manage to be a savvy functioning addict.
Anyway, that’s not even speculation as much as it is just outlining the worst possible scenario that I don’t think is actually happening.
this is how I feel
I suspect there have been more than two relapses, and I suspect he’s been upfront with his family and team about them. No need to involve the media every single time.

Have they always been so overpriced (relative to the times obviously)?
Ill probably end up getting one of the $100 replicas.

To me it's not so much about the relapse
It’s the circumstances that appear to be surrounding it. The signs all point to trouble at home and that’s something that’s incredibly unfortunate and sad for me to see, and it seems like that was likely a catalyst for what went down.
I know that addicts don’t need a good reason to relapse, but something like that is usually a decent trigger for one.

It’s a shame that it happened but I’m certain he would just assume everyone move on. I’m going to do what he asked of his fans…I’m going to pray for him and continue to pray for myself because I’m just like Hammy…I’m a flawed Christian and I can be a better person and example to my kids and family.
After that, I’m moving on….

So
1)His father in law stepped back from being his handler
2) he walked from where he was staying to Sherlock’s (that’s not by his house btw)
3) So he’s not living at his house in Southlake anymore, I’m guessing
Sounds like he’s not living with his wife right now

I don't like taking pictures of people.
It seems like an invasion of privacy, but if somebody is fool enough to take a picture of me, it’s not big deal. But if I saw Josh at a bar, I would probably be alarmed and trying to dream up some way to get him out of the bar before he got drunk.
I would've pulled out my phone and took a pic.
and likely would’ve came here with it to prove my post about it.

I would!
Imagine being a really good hitter, having a wonderful family, playing on a team that has been to the World Series two years in a row. I know I have some weaknesses I have been able to stay away from for the last few years, and I would hope he would be able to afford some pretty solid help.
Without a doubt.
I would.

The largest reason
is imagining the toll of a constant battle with addition and what that would not only do to myself and my teammates, but my wife and kids. No fame or fortune is worth facing that battle, especially due to the damage and strain it unfairly puts my family in.
