Saturday a.m. Rangers things
Tired of the Josh Hamilton stuff? Well, you might want to skip this morning's links...
Jeff Wilson has a story on yesterday's news conference, which includes a mention of Jon Daniels saying the team and Hamilton are tabling contract discussions. Given the deadline of the start of spring training which Hamilton had previously issued, and given how far apart the sides apparently are, this seems to make it inevitable that Hamilton will test the free agent waters this offseason.
Anthony Andro also has a story on the Hamilton situation and yesterday's events.
Evan Grant says the Rangers made the right decision in deciding to table contract negotiations.
Drew Davison writes about fan reaction to the Hamilton relapse.
Mac Engel says the Rangers should let Hamilton walk after the season.
Peter Gammons talks to Jeff Allison, another former first rounder whose career was de-railed because of substance abuse, about what Hamilton is going through.

I think it is possible that this relapse could lead to a contract actually getting done.
After watching the news conference, I got the impression he views the org. as an important participant in his recovery. I’m sure other orgs. would want to appease his needs, but I wonder if Hamilton could find it genuine thereby concerned he would be hung out. I know it is his responsibility(sobriety), but it appears as if the team has really stepped to him.
I am unabashedly in favor of signing him, and I do realize the risk, but I don’t see the risk as huge as most here. I know I’m leading with my jaw. I just can’t help but equate much of the success of this franchise these past four years to his acquisition.

Ads on SB
I work in advertising, and in all likelihood, 90% of the ads you see here are not placed by SBN.
There are companies called ad networks, they aggregate ad space from millions of sites, it could be 100% of the ad inventory on small sites like johnsblog.com, or 1% of leftover unsold ad space on espn/yahoo,etc.
The ads are tricky and use your cookie data to serve you relevant ads, so if you go to Phoenix.edu you will likely get univ of Phoenix ads, or if you read an article about building a front porch you will get served a home depot ad.
If you start seeing ads you no longer want to see, clear your cookies.

I went to three last year.
The wife and I were planning to go this year but we scrapped the idea. I think it will be too crazy with another World Series appearance plus the Yu Factor.
Spring training is awesome. Great to just get out in the sun and get some rays. Players are very laid back and easy to talk with/get autographs from. Seats are very cheap, you can sit behind home plate for $20.
Last year I got autographs from Young, Kinsler, CJ, Mitch, and Murph without even trying very hard.
where are you flying from?

I used to organize the concessions at a school I coached at for awhile.
Bottles of water (depending upon size) can be had for between $0.15-$0.30, when bought in a reasonable bulk. Nachos and cheese probably run about the same, though I never averaged it out. The profit margin on concessions at theaters is obscene.

So it appears Sickels thinks Olt's bat will probably be good enough you move him to the outfield before you trade him just because you don't have room at third.

Like all things, it has to be dependent on return.
I take it as meaning you don’t just trade him for what you can get because he’d be wasted otherwise. His bat can carry at another position.

I'm thinking if he is not traded
that he will break inas a four corner utility player. His outfield D will likely be below avg but acceptable in small doses. Sorta like Moreland. When Beltre leaves he would take over at 3B. He would take MY’s roster spot in 2014

He sure didn't seem Moreland-slow when I saw him.
Of course I’m no scout, but I’ve also read nothing calling especially slow, and a ton about how athletic he is.
Also, the bar in the corner outfield is pretty low because of how many glaciers with good bats are stashed there.

LIke Villanueva
Mike Olt is a pretty good athlete. Additionally, if Mike Olt breaks into the bigs at all, whatever position he plays, after playing mosltly at 3b in the high minors, playing 1b and COF (and some 3b) during his rookie debut want affect his value in any way. Scouts will know everything they need to know about his skill set to preserve his value.
Also
the main problem with this debate is a that is is a bit of a straw man argument: won’t he lose value as a 1b bat (in terms of production) as opposed to playing 3b. Yes. But it won’t be black and white. Depending on the club options, he could be an upgrade for this club at 1b when he is ready. He could be an upgrade at LF. He could provide a lot of value playing 3 spots (and DH) depending on the construction of the club at the time he is ready. Finally, he won’t lose his value as a trade piece as a plus glove ~20hr 3b whatever happens (wherever he gets his PT) if a nice trade evolves for him. And of course he could get traded before he debuts here. So, It should be a win win here.
It depends on what you think the debate is.
If the debate is, “will Mike Olt be worth more to the Rangers in a trade as a third baseman than he will be playing first base/outfield/wherever for Texas,” then it’s still an open question… and depends on a lot of variables.

If he's above average defensively at both 3B and LF...
…you lose about 2 wins moving him to LF.
I don’t see how it makes more sense to move him than trade him.

Since 3B is considered much more difficult to play
Why would you assume you would be only average in LF?

Different physical skills
I’d imagine quickness (burst, reaction, agility) is far more important important than speed at 3B, but the opposite holds in LF.

Adam was saying above average in LF and 3b
would be considerably less valuable in LF

I took from AJM's post
…you save more runs defending at 3B, therefore you add more wins there with good defense than you do with good defense in LF.

well, it all depends on the context
presumably we’re talking about 2013 at the earliest. More likely later in ‘13. If Olt really is above average at 3b, it is possible that by 2014 or 2015 he’ll be better defensively than an aging Beltre, who you could just slide into DH. So maybe we’re really talking only about a year or two of mostly outfield time.

to be fair
if Olt becomes a t top ten prospect and the best 3b prospect in the game, then you probably do look to deal him for a comparably valued outfield or 1b prospect (bigger bat or even better defense) in a year or so. But that requires that such a player is available. Blue chip prospects aren’t a 100% liquid market – it isn’t obvious that a right fit would be out there.

and breaking him in as a UT player
would allow Wash to manage his ABs.

I assume if Olt is all that, we'll end up trading Beltre after 2013
by Adam J. Morris on Feb 4, 2012 12:58 PM CST up reply actions
that'd make sense
and for that reason, I’m not super-worried about it. If Olt really is a cornerstone level player, there will be space for him. If he’s not, then you’re talking about a guy who you flip if a team values him higher than you, otherwise you make do with him where you can. Not too undifferent from someone like Ogando right now.

Two?
I get one unless I’m missing something. What spread are you referencing.

are these the right numbers?
3B: +2.5 runs
LF: -7.5 runs
I don’t see the two wins either

I went to the Hamilton seminar last nite
It was in conjunction with a “speed metal” Christian rock band. Bizarre. None other than Lance Berkman came to support Hambone on stage and discussed with the audience the importance of lifting up someone who has fallen. Berkman also ribbed Josh that he couldn’t let a Dallas area team win the World Series before a Houston area team. Lots of boos on that one. Lastly it was revealed than Hammy lived with his grandma for awhile in his mid 20’s and if he had bad dreams he sometime would go sleep in her bed. There was just a bit of laughter at that before the crowd groaned in dismay.
