PrintI figure yesterday's thread is almost at 1000, and we'll probably need a new one come game time, so why not do one in the intermediary.
The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional American footballin the United States, culminating a season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year. This game is held at a selected site, usually a city that hosts an NFL team. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held, with Super Bowl I being the 1966 season championship game. The upcoming game, Super Bowl XLVI, will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, on February 5, 2012, to determine the champion of the 2011 season between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

In baseball, every pitch has the potential to be something. In football, every play has the potential to be something.
Near as I can tell, potential meaningful advances do not happen as often in soccer. Some soccer fan is going to tell me I’m wrong without a convincing explanation of why.

Most of the reasons I don't like soccer transfer over to hockey.
Hockey has the bonus of having a major American league that I could easily follow if I wanted to.
I loved the hell out of playing street hockey, though. I’m better on ice than I am asphalt, so I regret never having played ice hockey.

You never really know when somebody is going to break, or the passing is going to open up the defense. That said, there’s definitely more of a feeling out process… but just like there are exciting and boring soccer games, there are also exciting and boring baseball and football games, too. Some people love a pitcher’s duel, some find it very boring. Same in soccer.

Football isn’t just about touchdowns, though. It’s about first downs. If not for the mechanic of first downs, I’d probably hate football, too.

Because mostly I just see the ball getting bounced around a lot, and a drive or shot on goal happening every now and then.
A guy breaking is the equivalent of a pitch in baseball: scoring might happen. And yet in baseball, announcers don’t scream about every pitch. Hell, they don’t scream about every hit. But soccer announcers scream about someone breaking away. There’s a reason for that.

World cup quality of play is usually boring because they’re playing not to lose. But If you watch a good EPL match or Barca, Madrid etc. you’ll find it much more entertaining.

Probably with the ball. That’s more like, say, a solid hit into the outfield… there’s a chance it will end in a score, a chance it will come to nothing, a chance it will set somebody up only for them to fail. And I’m really not following this:

Because a pitch -- any pitch -- might result in a double.
A player going to a base, and unlikely to be immediately taken off the base (ball being kicked back towards the other side). In football, this is the first down. Any play might be a first down.
But more importantly, any pitch might be a home run. With a player on, any pitch might be runs.

but the vast majority of pitches do not end in runs, or hits, or even contact. So most pitches don’t threaten the defense, or make them react, or anything. A run in soccer is more like a good drive by a guard in basketball… either he hopes to break past his defender, or else force the defense to react and get out of position to open up one of his teammates. Obviously there is less of a chance of scoring, but similar principle.

Or at least I want you to convince me that I’m wrong, and soccer has some hidden constant scoring potential that I’m not seeing.
And it’s not just scoring, it’s also advancement. Base hits aren’t easily taken away. First downs aren’t easily taken away. Hell, dribbling the ball across midcourt isn’t easily taken away.
But pushing the puck to or the ball to the other side of the ice/field is.

World Cup matches are more about pageantry and passion than great football, and Champions League matches are often boring because teams are much more likely to play for a draw due to the nature of the competition (two legs, etc).

I’d argue another selling point of soccer is some of the mad skills of the players. The things the players can do with the ball is just astonishing.
If you’re watching strictly MLS, you’re not going to see it.

They’ve been hammered with Giant money for 2 weeks and if the Pats actually won by 3, Vegas would get “middled” (shit load of money on NY +3.5 / New England -2.5) and lose their asses.
This is what happened in one of the first two Dallas / Pittsburgh Super Bowls. Pittsburgh opened as 3.5 favorite and tons of $$ came in on them. When the line moved to 4.5, money came in on Dallas….Pittsburgh won by 4 points and Vegas got slaughtered because both bets covered.

But I think that being a Cowboys fan has caused your view to be skewed.
For me, there’s no better feeling then knowing my team was the champion for the year. Going undefeated and then losing in the SB seems just terrible in comparison to winning the SB.
I also would think that being a Rangers fan you would understand how hard it is to build a team to win a championship and the luck it involves to get there. The hardest statement of yours to get is the “Lots of teams win Super Bowls.” I understand in black and white terms it is true in comparison to how many teams have gone undefeated.

It varies, depending on ingredients.
I don’t keep strict track of quantities, but a typical batch includes:
- 5 pounds of chili grind when I can find it; otherwise, a 5-lb. combo of cubed stew chuck and ground beef as coarse as I can keep it;
- Fresh-cut onions and garlic
- Several kinds of dried chilies, a few kinds of fresh chilies depending on availability, powdered, to taste;
- Some freshly brewed coffee
- Some beer, kind varying depending on mood (today: Dale’s Pale Ale)
- Some beef and chicken stock
-A few chipotles in adobo
- Some mole
- Cumin, cilantro, mexican oregano,
- Masa harina if a little extra thickening’s needed
I don’t think I’m forgetting anything. Usually I’m making it in a kosher kitchen, which means browning/graying the beef in Crisco; today, for the first time, I used bacon grease, and added some crumbled bacon.

Oops. A couple things:
First, probably obvious, but only the dried chiles are powdered. The fresh ones get diced, mostly.
I brown the meat in the grease first; drain and remove it, and then briefly cook the onions and garlic. Those get removed and rest with the beef. Then the stock gets boiled, and then the meat, onions, garlic, fresh chiles, coffee and beer get added to that, along with the first dump of chili powder.
That all gets simmered, with liquid (stock or beer) added as/if needed. Later, the mole, and more spice dumps according to mood, and whole fresh chiles added at some point — their juice gets squeezed out once they’re soft. The masa harina comes in as the pot thickens up.
I am very open to suggestions…

Its 2012, it shouldn’t be legal for the cancellation to just erase all time remaining on your subscription rather then just have it not renew at the end.
Almost as annoying as Microsoft making you call to cancel your account or remove a credit card.

and it still won’t let, says it can’t since its tied to my gold subscription… despite the fact that card expired 6 months ago and Ive been using the prepaid cards since.
I called right before it expired to have it removed, but they offered me like 60% off for 6 months so I took it knowing it’d be expired anyway. Still want it off though…

Finally beat Skyward Sword.
I’m always really sad watching the end credits of an awesome game.
The last portion of that, from final dungeon to final boss, is probably the best final stretch in the whole franchise. The credits are pretty cool, too.
Earlier I said I wasn’t enjoying it as much as the best of the Zelda games, but it ended so awesomely I kind of want to play it over again immediately.

Here's the thing, the show is sold out from the actual brokers, so I had to buy them on Stubhub.
My wife insists that both of us have to go with her, so we need 3 tickets. Nobody sells 3 tickets unless that’s how many they bought; far more people try to sell 4 and won’t divide it up. So we bought 4 tickets and we’re taking her best friend with us.

I lost my helmet one time as a RB.
Play was blown dead, but I didn’t think about that or the loss of helmet, I just ran like normal and got hit like normal.
Going over that thought process after the fact was terrifying.

The thing that makes football different is the stoppage of play for each individual play.
Other sports where full contact occurs are much more fluid, so you rarely have one guy lined up for the purpose of demolishing another guy lined up to do the same. You have that every single play in football.

I hate pulling out the “you have to play the game” thing, but I feel like that might be true in this case. My memories of football are almost entirely setting up and picking up a person I was going to fling my body at as hard as possible. Or a space I’d go for as hard as possible, knowing people would fling their bodies at me as hard as possible.

People have been arguing in hockey that new style pads actually make it more dangerous to get concussions etc

Read an article last year about
outer-padded football helmets, that way impacts are absorbed in the padding that gives as opposed to the stiff exterior that exists now. Aesthetic reasons are what is holding back the NFL from evaluating it more.

Most concussions, I believe, are the result of the head hitting the ground, a knee, or another head.
You rarely get a concussion from hitting someone’s pads.

as far as hockey goes they come from all kinds of places shoulders,knees,heads,elbows etc to the head
the argument is that with the “new” as in last ~10 or so year’s style pads that are all capped with hard plastics that are made to protect the players bones end up doing more damage rather than absorbing shock like older style soft pads that were basically just fluff

One of the radio shows that talks about sports that I listened to at some point was co-hosted by Andy Roddick.
The main guy was mocking him for reading the books, and he insisted none of their guests would have even heard of them. They put money on it.
Every guest, Roddick asked about The Hunger Games, and none of them had heard of it. Last guest was Kobe Bryant. Roddick asked if he read books, Kobe said ‘I should, but I don’t as much as I’d like to." So the main host starts laughing, and says “he insisted someone tonight would have heard of The. . .”
Then Kobe interrupted him and said “I am about to start reading The Hunger Games this weekend, though.”
