Sunday a.m. Rangers stuff
Super Bowl Sunday. I've got little interest in the football game tonight. That's what happens when you don't really care for either team playing.
Jesse Sanchez has a story on Julio Borbon, who is playing winter ball and will be competing for playing time in centerfield in spring training.
Randy Galloway says he's ready for baseball season to start, and talks some more about that Josh Hamilton situation, saying that there are reportedly photos being shopped that one person is asking $10,000 for, and another individual is asking $100,000 for.
Jean-Jacques Taylor writes that Hamilton's relapse has cost him what leverage he had with the Rangers.
Drew Davison has some notes on Brad Hawpe, Craig Gentry, and the winter caravan.

If someone is really trying to sell one for $100,000
I’d hate to know what is in that photo because it wouldn’t be good
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Hopefully they're really not worth anything close to 100k

It is obvious he owned up to it to the family by his statement.

An alcoholic falling off the wagon a couple times is forgiveable. Cheating on his wife is completely different. There could be a backlash against him if he did that and then continued to go out a speak to groups like he has been doing.

I dont know, someone could just be trying to get a lot of money..
Doesn’t indicate the content I hope, they may think an intoxicated Josh is worth that, uhh not so much. The way I see it just get this over it. For some reason i just dont think its as bad as Arizona, Just a feeling.
I tend to agree that he's lost some leverage with the Rangers but
really, how much has this cost him in terms of other teams? I wonder, too, if due to the support system he has here, if Josh would be more willing come down to stay with the Rangers?

Teams don't like players with serious distractions
I think there’s a good chance that around half the teams in baseball have 0 interest in Hamilton because of his past and now he’s got 2 public relapses while under team contract. The rest of the teams that will look past that won’t be looking to guarantee that much money to a player who they might lose completely to a bad relapse. And this doesn’t even address the major injury concerns he has.
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
Half the teams in baseball aren't interested in him because of his past?
I doubt that.
by Adam J. Morris on Feb 5, 2012 11:30 AM CST up reply actions
Nonsense
The list of teams that will be willing to sign Josh for a multi-year contract for say…..$15 MM annually…….you can count them on one hand.
That has more to do with team's financial situations and his injury history, though

He’s had two relapses with booze and passed all drug tests for several years. He’s still going to get a very nice contract.

Ben and I were talking about this yesterday
At the end of the day, I don’t think it will end up costing any significant amount. I think it does give the Rangers some p.r. cover if he does walk, which they appear prepared to let him do if he wants Jayson Werth money.
by Adam J. Morris on Feb 5, 2012 11:30 AM CST up reply actions
I really hadn't thought of it from the Rangers contract standpoint....the Rangers now have their angle for letting him walk....
I still think there’s a team out there willing to give him at least 6 years….I hate to see him go because I genuinely am concerned about him and love the way he plays.

Sure, they have an angle to let him walk but how does that help the Rangers?

It helps the Rangers because they won't have Josh Hamilton at Werth money.....
As for who replaces him? They will cross that bridge when they get to it…..

Of course...if he was a free agent today, somebody would give him $ 100-120 million.
Factor in that the Mets & Dodgers may have different ownership next year and it’s a slam dunk he will get that kind of $$ as long as he’s healthy and sober.

he is gona be nearly 32 and after his 10mil year he is gona be asking for at least MY got..with his durabilty issues and age..and see how MY contract was a hindrance..i dont want to go down that rd again
Young has been very good 2 of the 3 years of his contract.

Same could be said of Mike Olt.
And the A’s supposedly covet him… I would be intrigued by a deal that potentially had an Olt/Choice swap with other things.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
we cant keep trading our potential young players Olt/ Harry
Kinz , Nap, Josh, Cruz are all coming up FA time and we cant sign them all..we have a lack of Major league fielders coming up thru the system..we need Olt, Martin, Moreland to perform to make up for these guys..
an Olt for Choice swap would make sense
Olt is blocked by Beltre. Rangers lack OF prospects. Does anyone know if Choice will stick in CF?

We’d be taking our 22 year old 3B with good power, an ability to take a walk, an above average glove, a strong propensity to strikeout and coming off a good A+/Fall League showing…
For a 22 year old CF (who will probably be a COF) with great power, an ability to take a walk, an average glove, a strong propensity to strikeout coming off a good A+/Fall League showing.
And as Perfect Zero notes… Choice is local. UT-A product who grew up in Mansfield.
