Wednesday a.m. Rangers things
A fair amount of news yesterday for a February pre-spring training day...
T.R. Sullivan has a story on the Rangers and Elvis Andrus agreeing to a three year contract, worth approximately $14.5 million.
Jeff Wilson has a story on Elvis's new deal and Josh Hamilton's new "accountability partner."
Richard Durrett's positional outlook continues today, with Durrett looking at the team's #3 starter, who Durrett identifies as Yu Darvish.
Yu Darvish jerseys are now available for purchase, with the Rangers having to jump through some hoops to get permission to sell them before the start of the season.
Sullivan has a piece on the Rangers adding Joe Beimel and Conor Jackson to the organization on minor league deals with spring training invites.

Their #1 is Colby Lewis...
This rotation has lots of upside, but it also has the possibility of crashing and burning.
by dumdum000333 on Feb 8, 2012 10:53 AM CST up reply actions
the #1 is not Colby Lewis
and every rotation has that possibility, outside of maybe the phillies. that’s why you get as many arms as you can.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I'm saying our rotation has more variability than most
Holland and Harrison each only have 1 solid starting year, Feliz and Yu have never started a major league game, and Colby Lewis is Colby Lewis.

I agree, the Rangers staff has its question marks
but I would take this staff over most in baseball
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
As would I
I’m just pointing out that having a 5th starter with tons of upside doesn’t mean your rotation is a sure thing.

Too soon to pronounce him our #1
Do we all hope he becomes our ace? Yes, but as it stands currently I think saying he is our #3 works. Let’s remember Harden and Feldman were our 1 and 2 going into 09 before Colby and CJ emerged.

He may be on other teams
But however promising he may be, he’s not their No. 3. They probably consider him their No. 3. If you have Price, Shields, and last years ROY in the roto, you can’t call a rookie pitcher who probably will have his innings limited a No.3 no matter how promising or talented he is. I could agree with calling him their No. 4. And I saw columns citing as their No. 5.

Ok....so Philly says they're probably not going to re-sign Oswalt....
Oswalt has said no to the Pirates….the Rangers have some interest but it does not appear to be that serious or they would have signed him by now….same with St Louis…..
Now the Reds pop up as a rumored landing site for Oswalt but they’re saying it’s not true….
I have to say that I’m a little shocked that the market is this slow for Oswalt…I still don’t want him here but he would be hard to pass up if the money were down to like $3-5 mil with added incentives…..
Where does he end up?

I really like to listen to The Musers in the morning because they're entertaining
but their knowledge of sports….jeeeez.
They opined today that Josh Hamilton was embraced by most Rangers fans after this latest episode mainly because he’s white. They said if he was black and had worn his hat on backwards with upside down sunglasses he would have been treated differently. They also said Tarpley and Irvin didn’t receive this kind of treatment after they had press conferences.
This is absolute bullshit.
Mavericks fans didn’t really start coming down on Tarpley until 1990-91 or so and that was after several incidents. He returned in ‘87-88 to standing ovations…that’s what happens when you can score 27 points and pull down 23 boards in a game.
Cowboys fans also gave Irvin a standing ovation when he came back.
It’s not an issue of race.

Michael Irvin was always liked in Dallas
He had a great work ethic in practice, and was productive in games. It was easy for people to forgive him and hope he would straighten out. I don’t see a whole lot of difference between Irvin and Hamilton as far as fan acceptance goes.
umm, they said exactly that Tarpley received the same kind of treatment.
they said he got 3 or so strikes and then the fans turned on him.

Cruz and Jones submitted near-identical salaries of $7.5MM and $7.4MM, respectively. The Orioles value Jones less than the Rangers value Cruz, submitting a figure $500K below Cruz’s $5.5MM. It’s no coincidence MLB scheduled the players’ arbitration hearings for the same day, as that way a win by one can’t benefit another. Should one of the two reach an agreement soon, the salary figure might be kept under wraps until the other’s is determined. Gordon’s hearing is scheduled one day earlier, but they’re reportedly close to an agreement. The Cruz-Jones argument can be tailored either way — Cruz has more career power, but Jones is more durable and plays a premium position.
And he plays that premium position poorly.
Nellie’s the better fucking player for 2012 and it ain’t close.

Schilling
From what I could find on Baseball Reference, he’s only played with three: Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideki Okajima, and Byung-Hyun Kim. I seem to remember Okajima being pretty good, and Kim pitched his entire career in America, so other than being Korean, I’m not sure he fits the profile of “Asian pitcher.”
Conclusion: Curt Schilling is talking out of his ass.
