No one would have predicted that at the time.
Madson looked like he was going to sign a 4yr/$45M deal that very week.

I also saw it as a "Hey, Neftali..."
“we’re serious about this turning-you-into-a-starter” message. Feliz has had most of the offseason to get his “head right” and prepare.

this, also, assumes that the price would be the same
if Texas was in the market for Madson they wouldn’t have gotten him for 1yr/8.5M. If we were still in the market for a reliever then the market for Madson would have been different

yeah
to have Fielder at #2, and Pujols not on the list is a bit ridiculous. I do think the Fielder deal is worse, but that Pujols deal is awful when you consider how long and how much. It’s much worse than Matt Capps for 1 yr/4.75M

I think he is taking a wait and see approach with Pujols
In all likelihood it will turn out bad, but he is the best hitter of his generation and last year was his first non-MVP caliber one in how long?

Yea, but even if Pujols has an incredible return to form and is just dominant MVP material for 2012
2013, and maybe even 2014, LAA will be paying a ridiculous amount in his no-doubt-about-it declining years. Its so back-ended, it should be a WORSE deal than Fielder or Papelbon on the list

He’s not going to be worth anything near what he is getting paid in the last few years of that contract.

then he'll be suspended for 50 games for his first offense

You can't do a "wait and see" for these lists
Every single player may perform up to or exceeding their contract. That’s kind of the point of taking the facts you have and deciding whether a contract is good or bad.
Football can go to hell. The Rangers aren't ready for football season and neither am I.

Nathan a bad deal?
I thought it was kind of a “cheap” gamble for the Rangers that solidified getting Feliz out of the bullpen. If he doesn’t work out, Adams can probably close. It would be interesting to know how much of Nathan’s contract money includes incentives or guaranteed money.
I don't think it was cheap
Nathan’s pretty old and is still recovering from TJS. 2y/$14M is by no means a cheap deal.
It’s just that leaving Pujol’s contract completely off the list makes the whole list a bit less credible.

well, part (perhaps large) of the reason for the "lack of patience" at signing Nathan was so they can move Feliz
I am sure that was not factored into that list
JD would argue the Rangers got a closer+potential_TORP for 2-yr ~18M.

I hope I haven't offended the Blues Brothers with this.
Not really
He could have named Ogando or Adams closer and told Feliz he was moving into the rotation without signing Nathan.

I guess you're right, except that it is the field manager that makes that decision.

Wash wants a "proven" closer
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
So he goes with a guy who hasn't been a closer in 2 years?
And still has concerns about returning to form over 2 known dominant relievers?
like it or not, Nathan is a "proven" closer with loads of experience
I don’t think the Rangers tell Ogando at that point that he was in the bullpen as there were other chips to fall like Yu Darvish etc. To my knowledge, Ogando is still coming to camp preparing for the rotation and you never know what will happen in ST as far as injuries etc. So Ogando at that point wasn’t in the discussion and regardless both have little to no experience closing games. That was the point before last season as to why Feliz stayed in the closers role over starting. I would rather to have seen him start, but Wash wanted someone that was a “proven” closer.

Nathan
In Nolan and JD I trust.
At least they didn’t give a 32 year-old already decling star a quater of a biillion dollars over 10 years.
IF…. If Nathan is a bust, it’s a hit on the wallet, but not a ten year drag on the franchise.
Baseball's hard, guys. I mean, it really is. You can love it but, believe me, it don't always love you back. It's kind of like dating a German chick, you know?

I'm surprised that neither Reyes nor Pujols made the list
Based on the deals that were on it.

I thought it was an ok deal
I’m worried about his health.
What I was trying to say, is that based on the other deals he put on that list, I thought that he wouldn’t like that deal.
The “best deals” list shouldn’t be given too much credit, considering that J Roll is 10th.

Mayhap this explains the Beane deal yesterday
The city of Oakland was dealt a blow in their attempt to keep the Oakland Athletics by courting them with a new stadium. With the Athletics still looking at San Jose, Oakland has tried to keep itself in the mix with a waterfront ballpark that’s now dead in the water. The reason is that the state of California is pulling back it’s redevelopment money, and the Oakland Redevelopment Agency is going to be dissolved. That’s where the money would have come from for a new ballpark.

JD hasn't had a great offseason
it hasn’t been bad, and obviously its mostly tied to how well Yu performs, but the Nathan deal looks a little hasty, and he had to see the glut of relievers in the market. He’s basically paid at or above market value for two resources who should help the team, but both come with higher degrees of risk than most premier FAs.
No one can ever question the man’s tremendous ball sack.
I’m not a huge fan of the Andrus extension, mostly because I don’t see the need for it. Doesn’t really reduce the team’s risk while completely nullifying Andrus’ risk. What did we gain besides cost certainty, and how much do we believe that Andrus will all of a sudden become more potent on offense?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yeah, that was a bad contract.
We basically paid the Roy Oswalt of closers 14 mil over two years just to appease our manager and our pitching coach so we could try Feliz in the rotation.
That does kinda suck.
