Thursday a.m. Rangers things
Counting down the seconds until spring training starts...
Evan Grant writes that the Rangers are close to a two-year deal with Nelson Cruz, which would mean no arbitration hearing for him next week.
Anthony Andro has a story on the Elvis Andrus contract extension at Fox Sports Southwest.
Jeff Wilson writes that the Elvis Andrus contract extension is a win-win for the team and the player, and that the organization will continue to talk to Andrus about a deal that would buy out some of his free agency years.
Grant has the breakdown of how the $14.5 million for Andrus is structured.
Behind the paywall, Grant has a piece on the Rangers' efforts to sign some of their key players to extensions.
T.R. Sullivan has a story on the Rangers' roster situation heading into spring training (which is just two weeks away) and the various on-the-field issues the team has to sort out.
Richard Durrett continues his series where he looks at the various Rangers positions heading into spring training with a look at the #4 starter, Matt Harrison.
Richard Justice writes that, while the Rangers kicked the tires on Prince Fielder this offseason, they still believe in Mitch Moreland.

He turns down 10 mil from Det
says “no” to the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Pirates, and probably others
Is inflexible in his demands to start
and is only interested in teams that don’t need/want him.
I’ll echo tball’s sentiment and ask why he doesn’t just wait until mid-June at this point and play mercenary?

Texas isn't a slam-dunk either.
I see the Rangers as a serious contender but funny things can happen to teams that lose back-to-back World Series.

funny things happened to the Mavs
but they made it back and won it all against a super team. This team has all the tools, except consistent average or above offense from the 1B spot. They aren’t missing much of anything…and if Yu and/or Neffy are any good at all, the sky is the limit.
I think we’re the favorites, and yes, going two times in a row does count in my book as a positive.

We should be the favorites but I'm sure the
’79 Dodgers (who finished below .500) were the favorites to go to the World Series and same with the ’93 Atlanta Braves who had just added Greg Maddux (lost to Philly in the NLCS).

My point is that you make it seem it's very unlikely
I think it’s more likely that we go, than some other team; but if you put us in a pool of what, 13 other AL teams, (total of 30 teams) and say, "do the Rangers stand a good chance of making it vs. the field? No. No, we don’t.
"Look at our current situation with that camel f$%ker over in Iraq. Pacifism is not something to hide behind."

The biggest reason I don't think they're going back has
less to do with their talent and much more to do with respect for the history of the game.
Teams that lose two World Series in a row don’t go back.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."
"You want false modesty? F that."
It's more to do with the fact that the playoffs are largely a crapshoot
and it’s very difficult to defy the odds for 3 straight seasons.
I don't think it's a slam-dunk we make the playoffs this year.
I can’t come up with a reason that we don’t win at least 90 games other than Yu STBF but the Angels should easily win that many games as well.
There’s a chance we don’t win the AL West and it’s probably going to take 93-95 games to win the Wild Card.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

It'll be huge if there could be a 2nd WC this year for us
**not for the sport of baseball, but specifically for the 2012 Rangers.
It should be an entertaining baseball season.
of course there's a chance
there’s a chance the Mariners do what we did two years ago; but it’s highly doubtful.
I don’t see how the Angels are that much better. Their rotation is a nightmare, but their bullpen isn’t complete. Their offense got a huge boost from 1 bat, but we still hold advantages in most of the other 8 positions, and they trudge an automatic out in their lineup by the name of Mathis. They have young potential, but nothing proven outside of Pujols and the aging cast of veterans they took on. They scored almost 200 runs less than we did last year, had 200 less hits, 400 fewer total bases, a .263 team batting average vs. ours at .283, and an OPS of .714 vs. ours at .800
Over the course of a World Series, or playoff run, maybe crazy things happen – but unless their rotation puts up a collective 3.00 ERA (which is possible, I guess), they’re not going to win most games without some offense in the AL. They already had the # 1 pitching staff in the AL vs. us at # 5, and admittedly, they got even better. But who knows – maybe we did too? The talent is there from Holland, Lewis, Harrison, Yu and Feliz; we’ll just have to wait and see. But I’m willing to bet we have a much closer pitching line to theirs by season’s end than they have comparing their offense to ours.

Just what makes you think the Angels will score 800 runs if they manage to achieve a .340 OBP? And I’m not even going to go into the probability of that happening.
The Angels scored 667 runs last season. You think adding Pujols and Iannetta to the lineup will somehow result in an increase of 133 runs?
The only teams in baseball to score more than 800 runs last year were us, NYY, and BOS btw. You think the Angels line is comparable to those three teams?

I don't know what he's been offered but...waiting until late May a la Clemens

By Memorial Day, Oswalt would know which teams need pitching and which teams are likely to be in contention. Somebody might pay a premium to sign him at that point.

I got to listen to 15 minutes of speculation on Hamilton raping in a bar bathroom yesterday.
I am totally frustrated at what seems to be extremely unlikely, being presented on an Austin radio station that wouldn’t otherwise talk about the Rangers without the “probable” sex tapes. When somebody beats you over the head for 15 minutes on this, I was trying to pick up what is the source of this (the Onion, the Dallas Morning News) and it just sounded like conjecture modelled after Ben Rothlesbergers adventures in Georgia. Yes....I think he's wrong for the vast majority of people....are there some where race is the issue, of course.
I also think comparing the Michael Irvin situation (where a law was broken) and Hamilton’s (where none was broken) and claiming the criticism is racism is a bit disingenuous. They were completely different issues…..
Do I think that the public was willing to give Josh some slack a couple of years ago? Yes…but I would venture to say that the support this time is less than that previous time and if a tape comes out, that support will be virtually gone.

the Andrus contract I can understand
given his age, injury history and agent. But I don’t understand why Nellie wouldn’t want a 3-4 year deal. Guess it is possible the Rangers don’t want to sign him for more then 2 years. Saving their $$$ for Josh?
I'm going to be shocked if Josh, Napoli, Kinsler, Tiny E or Cruz are here after 2013.

Correct on Tiny E.
Kinz is going to want at least 5 years tacked on to 2013…will the Rangers do that with a player who is perpetually injured?
Napoli doesn’t appear to be a toss-up…JD said they were going to give him a one-year deal meaning he will hit free agency. We’ve seen the track record of this front office when they let players hit free agency.

won't it all depend on how he does this season
I can understand the two sides being far apart this offseason. Nap wanted to be paid like the stud he was in 2011 and the Rangers wanted to pay him like the slighly above average player he’s been for most of his career. We’ll see which player shows up in 2012…..

Yeah, this team has a terrible track record with players hitting free agency
like being unable to re-sign CJ, you know when they didn’t really try to re-sign CJ. Or when they were unable to re-sign,,,Well you know, all those other amazing players we let walk in FA like…

Josh and Napoli are probably gone if nothing happens before Spring Training.

Under normal circumstances
But don’t you think Josh presents a different quandry for the Rangers in that he is a great to elite player when healthy? And with Napoli, they have to be wondering if 2011 was the new standard for him or simply a career year.

not saying it is a fluke, but expecting him to continue at that high of a BABIP is way too much to expect. as is expecting him to have a nearly 100 point jump in wOBA

VMart’s OPS has been .844 or better 8 of the last 9 seasons
Nap’s OPS has been over .844 twice in his six year career
His career numbers are driven up by two really good years (.960 in 2008 and 1.046 in 2011). I have no doubt that Nap will be the better player going forward considering their respective ages and current injury situation but I don’t think you can argue that from 2006-2011 VMart was the better player. Maybe Nap had the higher peaks but VMart was much more consistent.

And ideally, you want to pay a player for what he's going to do

If he has a very good year with the Yanks, do you think
they will be outbid for him?
The best OPS Swisher has ever had was an .872…he’s also had two years in The Show when he played full time where his OPS was below .770.
Josh has a career OPS of .901 and the only year he was below .750 happened when he was injured.
I like that he plays a ton, can get on base and is not a mirage of a hitter (hits well on road and at home) but Nick Swisher is nowhere close to Josh Hamilton in terms of pure physical ability as a player.
Do teams who are playing the Yankees game plan for him and say “Beware of Nick Swisher…we can’t let him beat us.”
Hell no, they don’t…Nick Swisher is a very nice complimentary player while Josh Hamilton is a game-changer franchise cornerstone.
Please don’t say Nick Swisher is an adequate replacement for Josh Hamilton because it’s simply not true.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."
"You want false modesty? F that."
I'm not saying they are the same.
I think Hamilton will be better over the next several years because of the whole package he brings in defense and speed.
But if Hamilton plays 120-130 games a year and Swisher plays 150 games a year, offensively they’ll provide similar value.
And it’s not just about Swisher giving you EVERYTHING Hamilton did… the point is that if you go from Hamilton to Swisher, the window hasn’t closed because of that.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
There's also the problem of decline creeping in
with the players that are still here…it should happen to Face, Beltre, Cruz this year or next.

Elvis locked down and happy for 3 more, possible more to come; he’s young, and he’s got a Profar nipping at his heels down the road, but we’re set there for a while. Cruz locked down for 2 more and “happy” – he’s 31 now? So hopefully 2 more years of his prime, and then we figure it out. No need for a long contract there. Beltre locked down for 4 more, Mike Young locked down for 2 more, Kinsler for 2 more (hopefully sign him to an extension), and several young arms either already here or coming. We need to lock Napoli down, and figure out what to do with Hamilton…but it’s a good start.

Napoli and Hamilton are gone.
If I’m either agent and the Rangers offer a 10% equity stake in the franchise, I say fuck you, we’re going to FA.

No kidding...
your reply to Josey might be the pussiest response I’ve ever read online.
Just saying.
Are you...
going to go cry to Mommy next??
If you don’t wish for a conversation, don’t reply to him.
And don’t bother replying some whiny shit to me either.
Tiny prefers the passive / aggressive approach with me.
That way things like the Braggadacio Montage don’t come up.

OT but hoping someone can explain this to me ...
I don’t know a lot about stats like wOBA, so I was looking it up and I noticed that the formula puts a higher weight on when a player reaches base on an error then when he hits a single. Can someone explain to me why that is the case?

not sure the exact reason
but it might have something to do with the frequency that it occurs.

Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
I threw a fit about this once and Snark talked me down from the ledge.
I can’t search for his comments from that far back in time though.

There's some discussion of the issue in the comments here

Because some reached-on-error
are two-base errors.

There was an OT thread last night

Fanposts still exist.
The only thing that doesn’t is the widget on the front page. You can still click on “all fanposts” and they will pop up.

Yes.
Because Napoli needs to be behind the plate 80% of the time and we don’t believe in Face as a serviceable 1B option.
And he is young and his dongs are majestic.

I do...he had a .907 OPS on June 5 last year. Combine that with how he finished in 2010...that's a good hitter .850+ OPS.

If he can produce at that level, yeah he'd be a fine hitter
Personally I haven’t completely given up on Moreland either. But he’s almost running out of chances now. He’d better start producing or he’ll be gone just like Davis.

He might not be the future
but I don’t know who will be pushing him out of a job in 2012. Brad Hawpe?
I think he stays with us in 2012 barring unforseen trades
Hawpe is not going to dislodge Moreland from his spot.
