On the heels of a dramatic 11-10 win, we have some additional dramatic, and surprising, news...

Per various folks on Twitter, the Rangers have purchased the contract of third baseman Mike Olt (scouting report available here) from AA Frisco, and have optioned Brandon Snyder to AAA Round Rock.

Wow.

There's been discussion for quite some time that Olt could come up in the second half -- Joey Matches made a compelling case for it this afternoon -- but I didn't figure that the call would come before September, for a variety of reasons, not least of which being that Olt wouldn't get much playing time unless Michael Young started sitting.

Olt has a .287/.399/.575 line at AA Frisco this year, with 99 Ks and 61 walks in 415 plate appearances. Olt has impressed with his patience, his power, and his glovework at third base, and the Rangers clearly think that he can hold his own at the major league level right now.

Snyder was getting almost no playing time. I will have more thoughts on the call-up tomorrow, but I will say that I don't believe the Rangers are calling Olt up to play once a week...if he's up, he'll be getting at least semi-regular playing time.
