Big-hearted Chicago family man Chet has brought his family to a lakeside resort area, and although his wife and kids aren't quite as excited as he is, Chet has high hopes for the vacation. However, his optimism is sabotaged when his obnoxious brother-in-law Roman drops in unexpectedly, along with his snooty, strange family. Chet and his family try to stay open-minded, but they find it difficult to relax and enjoy themselves because of the constant annoyance of Roman's presence.

Trivia

The lakeside restaurant used in this movie was Ducey's Bar and Grill in Bass Lake, California, which burned to the ground shortly after filming due to a gas fire. The rebuilt restaurant today has posters and memorabilia from the film hanging on its walls as a reminder of the old restaurant.

Goofs

Continuity: When Roman is confessing to the real reason why he needed Chet's money, when he tells Chet that he made up the story about Chet in the can, he says "By the way, that story about you and your brother in the can at the wedding... I made it up." However when he originally tells the story, he says Chet was in the john with Kate & Connie's dad.
