Texas has already made a qualifying offer to Nelson Cruz, and that really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone at this point. That being said, the biggest question of the off-season has to be.. how hard JD pursue Nelson Cruz.. Texas already has a very good RF inked for 2014 in Alex Rios, which leaves a gaping hole in LEFT not in right. Granted, the Rangers could resign Cruz and hope Rios can adjust to playing LF or use Cruz more in the DH role, but is that JD's best option?
I tend to think in a perfect off-season, Adding Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran (to a 2 or 3 year deal) through free agency, and trading for David Price or an impact bat would make Texas a much more competitive team. I expect the Cruz sweepstakes to skyrocket. Both Cruz and Beltran will make big money, but would this team be better off with Cruz for (5,6,7) years or Beltran for (2,3) years?
