Rangers re-sign Geovany Soto

USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers have re-signed Geovany Soto to a one year contract

Per Jeff Wilson, the Rangers have re-signed free agent catcher Geovany Soto to a one year deal worth $3.05 million, plus incentives.

I like this deal for Texas.  Soto had a solid 2013 campaign for Texas, putting up a .245/.328/.466 line in 184 plate appearances while backing up A.J. Pierzynski.  Ideally, Soto will be a backup catcher for the Rangers in 2014, but if they can't land Brian McCann or another frontline starter, you can live with Soto starting 100 games for you.

In addition, if the Rangers were to land a good hitting catcher like McCann, and opted to use a rotating DH system, Soto is someone who could start 60 games at catcher, allowing McCann to start 100 behind the plate and 20 or 30 at DH.

Much like the Jason Frasor re-signing last month, this isn't a big, headline-making deal, but it is a solid move to bolster the back end of the roster, and provides the team with some flexibility moving forward.
