Texas Ranger righthanded starting pitcher Yu Darvish has been named one of three finalists for the 2013 American League Cy Young Award.
The other two finalists are Detroit Tiger righthander Max Scherzer, who is considered the favorite, and Seattle Mariners rghthander Hisashi Iwakuma.
Darvish was 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA in 209.2 innings in 2013. Darvish led the majors with 277 strikeouts, was 4th in the A.L. in ERA and WHIP, 5th in the A.L. in bWAR, and 2nd in the A.L. in ERA+.
The winner of the A.L. Cy Young Award will be announced on November 13, 2013.
Darvish will be only the second pitcher in Texas Rangers history to finish in the top three in the Cy Young balloting. Fergie Jenkins finished 2nd in the balloting in 1974.
With a top three finish in the CYA voting, Darvish will now be able to opt out of his contract with Texas prior to the 2017 season if he wins the Cy Young in 2014, 2015 or 2016, or if he finishes in the top 4 twice from 2014-16.
