Reid Brignac designated for assignment by Tampa Bay Rays

Reid Brignac - J. Meric

Reid Brignac has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays, and would make a nice utility infielder for the Texas Rangers

The Tampa Bay Rays have designated utility infielder Reid Brignac for assignment. The Rangers, who continue to hunt for a utility infielder for the 2013 season, seem like a team that would be interested in Brignac.

Brignac is a one-time top prospect for the Rays who was in the Baseball America top 100 four straight seasons, peaking at #17 prior to the 2007 season, after he put up a .321/.376/.539 line while splitting the season as a 20 year old between high-A and AA.

Brignac never lived up to the hype, however, and despite appearing in 205 games in the majors in 2010-11, he spent most of the 2012 season in AAA, putting up a .231/.323/.353 line in 400 plate appearances for Durham.

Brignac turned 27 last month, and while he's not going to hit much, he can play all the infield positions and would seem to be a possible fit as a utility infield candidate for Texas, as he has a reputation for being a solid fielder.

The Rays now have 10 days to waive, trade or release Brignac, and if I'm Texas, I'd see if the Rays would take a fringe prospect for Brignac. You could do a lot worse for a utility infielder.
