Four years ago today, we learned the Rangers were adding Andruw Jones
Four years ago today, the Rangers announced they'd reached an agreement with free agent outfielder Andruw Jones on a one year deal.
I was not a fan of the signing. Jones had signed a two year, $36.2 million deal with the Dodgers prior to the 2008 season, but he was so awful in 2008, putting up a .158/.256/.249 line in 238 plate appearances, that the Dodgers released him. I felt the Rangers would be better served looking at Nelson Cruz or Brandon Boggs, rather than Jones.
Jones ended up putting up a .214/.323/.459 line in 331 plate appearances for Texas, primarily as the DH. He had a 0.1 bWAR and a 0.6 fWAR. So he wasn't useless for the Rangers. Since then, he's gone on to carve out a role as a righty bench bat for the ChiSox and the Yankees the past three years.
