Thoughts on an 11-3 Rangers win

Rick Yeatts

Nelson Cruz hits a grand slam, Justin Grimm pitches well, and the Rangers sweep and move into first place

Rangers 11, Mariners 3

  • Quite a series for the Rangers, who outscored Seattle 23-3 over the three game set. Meanwhile, the A's, who on Friday were up 2.5 games in the A.L. West, were swept by Tampa Bay, meaning the Rangers are now up a half-game in the West.
  • After Nick Tepesch got knocked out of yesterday's game in the second inning with an injury, requiring the Ranger bullpen to throw 7.1 innings, Texas really needed innings from Justin Grimm today. And Grimm delivered, going 6 innings, allowing just 2 runs (one earned) on 6 hits, a walk and 9 Ks. Michael Kirkman then finished out the final three innings, allowing a single run (on a Kyle Seager home run) and picking up a save.
  • Big days at the plate for Leonys Martin and Nelson Cruz, both of whom had been slumping lately. Leonys went two for four with a triple and a homer, and Cruz also went two for four, including a grand slam off of M's starter Aaron Harang that broke open the game and gave Texas an 8-2 lead in the fifth inning.
  • Also noteworthy at the plate, Ian Kinsler went 2 for 4 and also got on base via an HBP, Lance Berkman was 1 for 3 with a pair of walks, and Mitch Moreland and Adrian Beltre each homered.
