Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier had her first commercial success with the romantic comedy The One and Only (1999). Later films include Brothers (2004) (lamely remade in English in 2009 with Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman), After the Wedding (2006) and In a Better World (2010) which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) is her only American film to date, however it was recently announced that she will direct the American adaptation of Rapt.
My two cents: Bier's immense talents may be wasted in Hollywood, who knows. Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic in After the Wedding and Open Hearts. Connie Nielsen, in her native element, is dynamite in the original Brothers (Brodre). Many of Bier's films are available on Netflix.
