Per Jason Cole on Twitter, the Rangers have re-assigned 20 year old righthander Cody Buckel to extended spring training.
Buckel has spent the season at AA Frisco and has been plagued by control problems all year. In 6 games (5 starts), he's gone just 9.1 innings, walking 28, hitting 3, striking out 9, and allowing a pair of home runs. Buckel has given up 27 runs on the season.
Buckel was the Rangers' 2nd round draft pick in the 2010 draft, and had rocketed through the system, making it all the way to Frisco last season after dominating the high-A Carolina League. Buckel was viewed as having an outside shot at making the rotation this spring, but did not pitch well and fell out of the running early on.
The reports seem to indicate that Buckel's problems are mental, rather than strictly mechanical, and he will presumably work with the coaches in extended spring to get things back on track.
