I'm new here and this is my first fanpost, so please bear with me if I've strayed off the expected course. I've had this expansion & realignment idea for a few years now. I posted it on BBTIA a couple years ago and thought I'd re-post it here. Full disclaimer: I live in Portland, OR and would love to see an expansion team here. That's what first got me thinking about this a few years ago...
Postseason: Four divisional winners plus one wildcard in each league
Seeding: 1 through 5 with wildcard being #5
First round: #4 vs #5 in best 2-of-3 series starting first day after regular season. #4 seed gets home field all three games.
Divisional round: #4/5 vs #1 while #2 vs #3 in best 3-of-5 series. Higher seed gets home field in games 1, 2, and 5.
League championships & World Series: Carry on just as it has been.
This format places more emphasis on winning a division. It also keeps division leaders motivated late in the season to get higher seeds. Division winners don’t want to be the #4 seed who has to play extra games and burn through their top SPs.
Tampa Bay and Colorado are the only teams asked to switch leagues, but those teams are not steeped in tradition with long-term rivalries. While we’re at it, institute the DH in the NL so all 32 teams play by the same rules.
With divisions being better aligned geographically, fans can make road trips to away games a little more easily.
Expansion teams belong in Portland, OR and Charlotte, NC. Both are viable markets with larger and more affluent fan bases than several established MLB cities. Both also fit easily into the new geographical alignment.
