Per Evan Grant, when Ron Washington pinch hit for Lance Berkman in the 8th inning of tonight's game, it was because Berkman was hurt.
Berkman, who has been battling a knee problem all season, tweaked his back beating out a potential double play ball, and apparently is going to be re-evaluated tomorrow.
With Jeff Baker and Craig Gentry on the disabled list, the Rangers are already very limited in terms of their bench depth -- today's game featured a bench of David Murphy, Robinson Chirinos, A.J. Pierzynski, and Engel Beltre.
If Berkman has to go on the d.l., the position players on the 40 man roster who are in the minors are:
Joe Benson, who is on the minor league d.l.
Chris McGuiness, who the Rangers called up when Mitch Moreland got hurt, and who they aren't going to be in a rush to recall
Leury Garcia, who is hitting well in the minors, but who was awful in his time in the majors this year, and who I can't imagine Wash wants to give any playing time to
Mike Olt, who would be the ideal candidate to come up, except he's in a bad slump right now and has only been active for about a month since dealing with his vision issues.
For those who think Berkman is going to sulk and pout and insist he's healthy so his 2014 option vests, here's what Grant quotes Berkman as saying in regards to whether his bat is going to get going again:
“Either it’s going to come back as the knee gets stronger,” Berkman said, “or I’ll see you guys in the stands.”
