It goes without saying the best thing for the Rangers Is for Cruz to appeal - the team is as close as a team can get to the dividing line between those that make the playoffs and those that do not.
But Cruz is close to a dividing line too -- he has a chance to show for the first time he can be productive for an entire season. Until now he has managed more than 130 games once and that was with diminished production last year. It has been the biggest black mark on his record and it is one that would have a major impact on his next contract, both its length and payout.
By appealing a suspension Cruz can go a long way towards showing he can stay healthy and productive and that would mean a more favorable bottom line when he hits free agency.
For a four-year contract, a 10%boost would more than offset the loss of one-third a season of pay with a suspension. I think finishing this year will deliver at least that. I hope Cruz sees it the same way.
