10/28 OT: Sutyagin House

Sutyagin House From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Sutyagin House", claimed to be the world's tallest wooden single-family house

The Sutyagin House was a wooden house in Arkhangelsk, Russia.

The 13-story, 144-foot-tall (44 m)[1][2] residence of the local entrepreneur Nikolai Petrovich Sutyagin was reported to be the world's, or at least Russia's, tallest wooden house. Constructed by Mr. Sutyagin and his family over 15 years (starting in 1992), without formal plans or a building permit, the structure deteriorated while Mr. Sutyagin spent a number of years in prison for racketeering.

In 2008, it was condemned by the city as a fire hazard, and the courts ordered it to be fully demolished by February 1, 2009.[1][3] On December 26, 2008, the tower was pulled down,[4][5] and the remainder was dismantled manually[6] over the course of the next several months.[7] The remaining four-storey structure burned to the ground on May 6, 2012.[8]

Built by a single man out of an improbable material, Russia’s wooden skyscraper became the tallest wooden house in the world at 144 feet and 13 stories. Nikolai Sutyagin, a former gangster, spent 15 years continuously adding additional floors to his home because he was never satisfied with the way it looked. With its creator imprisoned, the structure (never fully permitted in the first place) was crumbling and neighbors were worried about fire, leading to the building being mostly demolished in 2009 (update: the rest burned down in 2012).
