The Texas Rangers have, as was expected, called up righthanded pitcher Phil Klein to start tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox. To make room for Klein on the 25 man roster, the Rangers have designated outfielder Carlos Peguero for assignment.
This isn't exactly shocking, as Peguero has slumped lately, and appeared to be the odd man out with Josh Hamilton expected to return in the next week or so. Peguero was hot initially, but his recent slump, combined with the lack of at bats available for a lefthanded backup outfielder/bench bat once Hamilton returns, made him expendable.
The Rangers now have 10 days to waive, trade or outright Peguero. Peguero has the ability to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, should he wish.
The Rangers now have just a three man bench, although Hamilton is expected to be activated soon -- possibly as soon as Sunday -- at which point an extra reliever will most likely be sent down to make room for him. In the meantime, it remains to be seen whether Klein will be up for just this one start, or if he'll stay on the active roster beyond today.
