The Texas Rangers have activated pitchers Andrew Cashner and Tanner Scheppers from the 15 day disabled list. Cashner has been added to the 25 man roster and is making tonight’s start against the Seattle Mariners. To make room for Cashner, the Rangers have optioned pitcher Nick Martinez to AAA.
Scheppers, meanwhile, has cleared waivers and been outrighted to AAA Round Rock. He can decline the assignment, though that would mean giving up his guaranteed contract for 2017.
The decision to drop Scheppers from the 40 man roster is surprising, particularly given the bullpen issues the Rangers are dealing with. If Scheppers accepts the outright assignment, it is ultimately moot, but I would have expected someone to put in a claim on Scheppers, which means waiving him was something of a risk.
With Scheppers outrighted, the 40 man roster now stands at 38.
