Discussion thread -- who do you pursue?

Okay, at this point, the first few free agents have signed, the market looks like it is going to be ridiculous, and Brian Giles -- my top f.a. target -- has signed a deal that looks like a great deal for the Padres.

So, at this point, who would be your #1 free agent target if you were Jon Daniels, given who is left out there, the Rangers' needs, and the likely cost of bringing said player to Texas?

My pick
As I mentioned a few days ago, I'd have to go with Paul Byrd.

You're going to have to overpay to get him, but he's someone who should be able to handle pitching in TBIA, is a smart pitcher, will give you solid innings...

In light of the other players still out there, he'd be my #1 target.

Right position
wrong player.  I would go with Matt Morris.  See if we can persuade him to come here.

Paul Byrd
He seems like the type that can handle Ameriquest.  I'd go with him and continue to work the trade market.

by rangeressary on Dec 2, 2005 12:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Here you go...
  1. Matt Morris
  2. Millwood (only if no Morris)
  3. Dotel
  4. Lawton/R.Sanders/J.Jones/Encarnation (1)
  5. Jason Johnson/Armas/Kim/Mohler

Dotel
After reading that Dotel might not be ready until mid-summer... I can see it all unfold now: Dotel finally makes it back from rehab - we're most likely out of the race by then, gets hammered a couple times out, re-injures elbow and is lost for the rest of the year...

Oh yeah..
Maybe Weaver or Washburn if the $$ is right, but that is doubtful.

by Topgun22 on Dec 2, 2005 12:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Kenny Rogers.
No doubt about it.

Dan
What else do you do?  You bring back Kenny and have essentially your '05 roster -- then what?

Jamey

by Jamey Newberg on Dec 2, 2005 2:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That wasn't the question on the thread
Adam's question was who was the #1 priority.

by DJCahill on Dec 2, 2005 2:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Jamey
Are you saying that if they bring back Rogers then that's it and nobody else would be added?

by Chris Martin on Dec 2, 2005 3:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not at all.
I'm just curious as to what Dan would do.  And Dan, I know that wasn't Adam's question.  Just curious.

by Jamey Newberg on Dec 2, 2005 4:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

that would be great
...because I don't expect them to be able to replace Rogers, who had a pretty good year all in all and could probably have another next season.  You bring in someone else and you don't know what you'll get.

So, I would hope they'd bring Rogers back AND add one of the better remaining free agents, although that's extremely unlikely, of course.  But that's what you have to do to get better.

To be realistic, they're not going to bring back Rogers and they'll probably settle for one of the lesser remaining free agents to replace him.  It's the "safe" thing to do.  After Chan Ho Park, I really doubt Hicks will pay big money to someone who's a good bet to struggle in Arlington.  They're not going to get better that way unless their freeagent goes out and has a career year or someone in their current rotation ends up being unforeseeably good.  The positive side, I guess, is that they're not going to weigh down the payroll with an albatross.

I'd sure like to see them take the risk, though.  With the free agents making out like they are, there's going to be significant competition in the trade market.  I'd rather see them wreck their payroll than their farm system.

by Dustin on Dec 2, 2005 5:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Personally, I'd rather they
wreck their farm system.  Which I don't believe is really going to happen, because I think our farm is thouroughly mediocre.

It's kind of funny that the Yankees keep trading away their farm, yet they can still pull up a Robinson Cano, who hit better than Blalock last year, when they need to.  On the other hand we, who have a handful of untouchable prospects every year, keep seeing guys like Nix crap down both pant legs when called up.

by DJCahill on Dec 2, 2005 5:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

With all due respect, that's ridiculous
Well, the Yanks are an extreme example.  They have no farm system because they trade players away all the time and sign free agent after free agent.  The result is $200+ million team that's not really all that great.  They get a Robinson Cano now and then because of their scouts, who make due the best they can.

They can afford bad contracts, so the risk is minimal.  No other team can operate like the Yankees do.

Let's See
Farnsworth 3 for 16
Sign Morris 3 for 27
Sign Juan Re Encarnacion

Trades:
Trade Mench for Bautista
Trade Soriano for Millege

by Longhorn on Dec 2, 2005 1:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

My turn
1a. Kenny Rogers for one year
1b. or Matty Mo for two (maybe three, but not if I can avoid it)
1c. or Paul Byrd for two
  1. Reggie Sanders
  2. Trade Sori for Jason Marquis and Ray King
  3. Octavio Dotel (2 years, incentives out the wazzoo).
Don't know what my thing is for Cardinals players, but that's how it breaks down.

If I am Jon Daniels?
Brett Tomko, Joe Mays, or Elmer Dessens.

If I am the GM of the Rangers in bizarro world where I am acutally allowed to sign someone good then it's Matt Morris.

by Chris Martin on Dec 2, 2005 2:15 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Top targets at this point.
  1.  Offer arb. to Rogers and hope he accepts.
  2.  Morris or Millwood.
  3.  Avoid high-priced relievers.
  4.  If St. Louis will do it, you try for the Marquis/King deal.
  5.  Give Botts 10 hours of outfield practice everyday between now and Spring Training, then up it to 12 hours per day.  Stick him in the OF full time next season.

Interesting.....
This is difficult, since any free agent target(s) I would attempt to sign would be decided upon with potential trade options.  Being that I don't have any of that "inside info", I would go with this in mind:

If I can trade a Soriano package for a Milledge package, I would try to do that.  Then I have a little more money to play with.

My priorities would be to make the team competitive AND generate fan interest.  "If you buy them, they will come."

1)  Barring a trade for an ace (I think Beckett was our shot at that), then I would sign 2 of these 3:  Burnett (yes, even at 5 years), Millwood (about 3 years), Morris (2-3 years)

It gives us not just the beginnings of a decent rotation, but actually "a rotation" at all.  These guys can grow into the team and the prospects can grow up watching these pitchers....and maybe learn from them.

  1.  I would look at Dotel, but not for one year...to me, that's just a waste.  If he gives us club option for more, then I do it.
  2.  Maybe look at Ponson, if the reports are accurate about his drinking, weight, and hair issues being addressed.
  3.  Personally, I'm not opposed to Rogers coming back if he accepts arbitration.  BUT not at the expense of the other 2 listed above in #1.
  4.  I still don't know what to do about RF, as none of the ideas I have for RF get me excited, and anything we have doesn't have the arm for RF.  I'm not opposed to Pierre coming in, because I would like to have a little speed and he had a little grit to him.  I would not get him if the money interfered with my pursuit of pitching.
Honestly, I don't know what to do about the OF.  Trades are the only real option there, in my eyes.  Even that is going to tricky as our pitchers will be the ones asked for in a trade.

Basically, try to trade Soriano (before he walks next year).  Trade Nix, Barajas or Laird, A. Gonzalez, or whatever......but don't give up much else.

I could handle:

1B: Tex
2B: Kinsler or <2B to be named later>
SS: Young
3B: Blalock
OF: Mench, Milledge, Delucci, GMJ (unless something pops up out of nowhere)
C: Laird/Barajas
B/DH:  Weak, Weak, Weak.....Nevin if he can hit anything!!!!  If we can't find a decent DH, let the stinking pitchers hit.....couldn't be much worse.

Along with a pitching staff:

Burnett/Millwood
Morris
C. Young
K. Loe
Maybe Ponson

Benoit
Rodriguez
Dominguez
Whoever
Whoever
Cordero

I would feel a lot better about the team this way than I did before.

PS:  I would love to get Vernon Wells back home, if we could pull it off.  That would go a long way in solidifying the OF.

I miss 1989. I miss 1995. Please make me miss another season in 2006.

Free Agents...
1.)Matt Morris
2.)Octavio Dotel
3.)Trade for Pierre

Kenny Rogers
I'm with Dan; it's a no brainer to me.

I would also try to sign Octavio Dotel and Byung-Hyun Kim for the bullpen.

I would try to deal Mench and something else for Alexis Rios and Miguel Batista.

I would deal Soriano and Barajas to the Mets for whatever they would give me, possibly Aaron Heilman.

I would trade for Milton Bradley, which wouldn't cost much, and stick him in CF every day.

I would explore dealing Blalock for a young corner outfielder who can hit and get on base, and replace him with Bill Mueller at third.
