Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

16-12 the rest of the month

Assuming the Rangers don't score 10 runs in the final 4 innings of tonight's game (while holding the Yanks scoreless), Texas will be 10-16.

There are 28 games remaining in May.  If the Rangers go 16-12 over that span, they will be 26-28, two games below .500.

I think that's the dividing line.  At 26-28, assuming that the Angels aren't en fuego in May, the team is probably close enough that you can drink the Kool-Aid and say that the team can still contend.

At 25-29, though...you are 4 games under .500 two months into the season.  You probably have to start making calls to try to determine what the market is for Kenny Lofton, for Eric Gagne, for Sammy Sosa, for Brad Wilkerson.  And for Mark Teixeira.

This team is playing horribly right now.  The team is better than they have shown, but if they can't get it in gear, that doesn't really matter.  If the Rangers play poorly enough in the first two months to put themselves out of contention, it is moot.

The Rangers need 16 wins between now and the end of May.

And if they don't get those 16 wins, the highlight of the summer is going to be seeing how much the Rangers can get in exchange for Teixeira.

Like I posted in the game thread
"I can't see the game, grant you, but going from the comments here and the box, they're looking really shitty in their own ballpark against a team that hasn't been playing well.

And, just for the record, I advocated blowing the roster up last year.  They can still win with this team, but they're going to have to get off their asses.  And the best-case scenario is they back into the playoffs with less than 90 wins.  That's nothing to be proud of unless they go on a miraculous run and win the World Series.  I'll bet the first person to respond $1000 if this team wins the whole thing.  Doubt I get any takers.

Should've blown it up.  Millwood, Otsuka, Blalock, Young, Teixeira...these players had varying degrees of value and with them alone you could put together the makings of a championship team.  Hicks doesn't have the balls for that sort of thing, though."

Latest Trade Values
I think I agree that last Winter was a better idea.

Present Trade Values reflect present realities:

Millwood, down.

Blalock, Slightly down.

Aki, slightly up.

Young, OMG! Who wants my gas-guzzling Cadillac?

Tex, OMG, who wants my gimpy-knee'd slow starter before Boras shows up?

Boy, that Kam Loe is looking good.  God, this team SUCKS.  Who is the Yankee pitcher tonight, Cy Young or Walter Johnson? We make any pitcher look good

5 Blow It Up Issues
  1. With Oakland doing the same, will they dilute the trade value?
  2. Good Draft Coming, so, maybe wait for that Draft to make in-roads first? (So, wait)
  3. Trade Tex in June-July? And if his 2007 #'s suck?
  4. Trade Old Guys on one-year deals, but for what?
  5. If you're JD, you can't claim it's time to blow-it-up, can you? Why trade Danks then? Seems sorta schizophrenic.

by 3Bagger on May 1, 2007 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

The Danks Trade
That wouldn't be schizophrenic.  That was simply good prospect for good prospect.  You could still justify that move if you blew the team up.

by rangeressary on May 1, 2007 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

True...But...
You do lose one year with McCarthy's contract status.

The Psycholgical Biggie was JD giving up Youth to San Diego for short-term fixes. That was last year. And you're right, that's not schizophrenia, maybe senile-dementia? Can you get that at 29?

by 3Bagger on May 1, 2007 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

If you're going to start blowing up this team...
The demolition should include the "boy wonder" and his George Jefferson-look-alike manager.
There's adequate talent on this team; just poor chemistry and no direction.

Adam said, "The team is better than they have shown."  I don't know if this team is better than they've shown.  And even if they decide they need to blow it up, is JD the one do it?  What has he shown to prove that he can?  Is there a big deal that's hasn't blown up in their face?

Man, it's depressing when your team sucks.  And as you all know, we have lived through a long time of our team sucking.

Well...
I don't know if this team is better than they've shown.

If they lose tonight, they've shown they are a 100 loss team.

I think they are better than a 100 loss team.

Ug
I'm already more excited about what we might get for Tex later this summer than about the rest of the season.

At least I was excited until I noticed that Chris Young has a 2 hit shutout through 7 and that Adrian Gonzalez has 7 home runs, 25 rbi's, and an eqa of .314 already.

It would be real nice to have Gonzalez ready to step in at first after we traded Tex for prospects.

Spring Training
was trying to warn us.

As die-hard fans, we should have noticed the mediocrity.

Ironically, the players hazed the most have been the best. And the "sure things" have been anything but.

Spring Training?
I don't know where you were, but the Rangers had the 2nd best record in the AL during Spring Training.

Not the Won-Loss record. The individual performances.

The guy's who matter most. #1 SP, #2 SP, #3 SP, etc. They all sucked in March. And still suck.

With a few exceptions, the players who struggled in March, have struggled in April. Kata, JHJ, Sosa, each were good in March. And decent in April.

The question is, are the Rangers this bad? Or just playing this bad right now?

Millwood and Padilla could get better. McCarthy (or his replacement) cannot get worse. The hitting must improve, or, we just suck.

So the Astros will be trading?
Oswalt and Berkmann, right?

Oh I forgot, this only applies to the Rangers.

by Sharky on May 2, 2007 1:34 AM CDT reply actions

Boy
I sure am glad we have Michael Young for almost 7 years more with a no trade.  Where would this team be without his brilliant leadership at SS.

As far as Wilkerson, I can tell you his trade value.  A bean pie and a bag of corn nuts.

BTW
The Astros are trading Oswalt and Berkmann right?

After all, they do have the same record!

Cant see why they wouldn't!

May
I don't see how they could possibly go 16-12.  Only 1 of their starters is worth a damn right now.  They aren't scoring any runs.  And for some reason they can't play defense right now either.  On top of that, they have a really tough looking schedule in May.
You using the whole fist Doc?

by Arnold Babar on May 2, 2007 6:16 AM CDT reply actions

Blowing it up
seems like a great idea until you realize the rangers would get ripped off on every trade and get jack in return... then we would all sit around bitching about how they traded away their best talent and got beads and trinkets in return.

Rambling thoughts
This team is pitiful.  Maybe Danials and Hicks should have let Washington bring in his own coaches. Could it be the players are no longer hearing what Rudy J. is saying? We know they can hit, I think. Mark Conner coaching seems to have no impact on the starting rotation. Maybe he belongs in the bullpen as the coach, like he was hired to do.

I have forgot how much the team is paying Brad Wilkerson, but he is horrible.  He has no clue at the plate. I am losing faith in Jon Danials.  While the Chris Young trade did bring Aki, in the long run this trade will haunt the Rangers.

Just a few rambling thoughts.

Hicks is a terrible owner.  The Stars have done nothing under is ownership, the Stanley Cup team was already in place when he bought them. The Rangers continue to do nothing under his ownership.  I am sure his soccer team will suck within a couple of years.

better than they've shown?
I don't understand these statements?

based on what? some stupid pythagerian formula? past results finishing in third place?

this team sucks - they have not executed in any aspect of the game this entire season, except possibly the all important running game.

They are terrible on defense, they have terrible pitching, and the hitting is barely major league caliber

sure they can do better, but I'm not sure they are better than they have shown.

so far they have shown they are last place team, and that is exactly what they are

this goes directly back to two previous seasons when everyone held out some ridiculous false hope that being a few games back in July meant the Ranger s were close and "anything" can happen if they just get to the playoffs.

they should have blown this thing up two seasons back and definitely last year.

this is depressing - Hicks should refund every season ticket holders money and apologize for driving this thing into the ditch

by simplesimon on May 2, 2007 7:57 AM CDT reply actions

Hicks
Why is it his fault? I don't see anyone to blame for the current mess except for the players.

by trza on May 2, 2007 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Based on this:
Most of us knew the Rangers would suck at hitting, but NOBODY could have predicted that so many starters would come out of the gate this slowly.  It's clearly some kind of aberration.

And I think we know that the starting pitching, while it is not great, should be pretty solid.

Yeah, they suck at defense.  I don't think that will change, unfortunately.

The fact that they're 10-15 or whatever is actually ENCOURAGING.  They simply cannot play much worse than this.  Hopefully.

They can
Win 18 games in May.  Against most or all odds, though.  17 would be sparkling.  16 would be surprisingly good.  14 would be improvement. 12 would be expected.  So shoot for some overachievment.
