Evan Grant has a new Rangers newsletter up.

There's a fair amount of discussion about the Brandon McCarthy situation, and why Grant thinks sending him to the minors would be a mistake at this point.

There are also questions about why Michael Young is struggling, why Mark Teixeira is struggling, and why Hank Blalock is struggling, and a suggestion that the Rangers move Ian Kinsler to left field, which is one of the worst ideas I've heard in some time.

Just for fun trade

Would you trade Teixeira and MY for Reyes and Milledge? Obviously it won't happen because they have Delgado, just an idea. Better yet, would you do it if we still had Adrian Gonzalez?

Just trying to change up conversation since we're all bummed with how the team is playing.

Totally agree

Reyes is probably one of the top 5 players in the league and he makes almost nothing. They would trade him for every prospect that we have.

Kinsler's "locked up" through 2011.

His salaries for those seasons haven't been determined yet but he's Rangers property for 4 more seasons after this one.

who really has market value outside of Tex?

MY obviously not

Gagne - I doubt it considering he didn't start the season on the team and is already back on the DL

Millwood - probably the best candidate

Aki - ok maybe he's the best candidate

Padilla - couldn't get much right now for him unless he turns it around

Blalock - very little

Lofton - I guess you could get something considering he leading the AL in steals

Sosa - he's probably the one old guy they would want to keep just b/c he'll draw fans when he hits 600

Wilkerson - very little

Most of the relievers are pretty young so I doubt they would send them packing. Can't think of anyone else they would want to trade or could get anything for. I really hope (and I think they can) this team turns it around. They may not be a great team but they're not near as bad as they are playing.

You're right, they wouldn't trade Reyes for both Young and Teixeira combined.

Milledge, C. Gomez, and Delgado for Teixeira?

We'll still get production out of Delgado who replaces Teix and having Milledge and Gomez in the OF would be awesome. You guys know Milledge already. Gomez was rated 2nd best OF prospect on the Mets system and 3rd overall (behind Martinez). Martinez was rated best in hitting for average and power. Gomez was rated best in the organization for Fastest baserunner, Best Athlete, Best Defensive OF, Best OF arm.

Milledge is also considered a very good defensive OFer too. We turn into a very weak OF that is a HUGE liability defensively to probably one of the best OF that's great defensively.

They would do Delgado and Milledge for Teix. I would only do it if we can get Gomez too.

Milledge and Delgado

I'm not sure that the difference between Teixeira and Delgado is enough to make them give up Milledge, although I could be wrong. Obviously, Teixeira is a decade younger and currently cheaper but they're basically the same player (and they both suck so far this year).

If we were to deal Teixeira to the Mets I'd like to get Maine but that's a pipe dream now, so I'd probably want to get Pelphrey in the deal somehow.

we trade Young to the Whitesox for Ryan Sweeney and others.

So we'd have young kids in R. Sweeney, Milledge, Gomez, Kinsler, Laird, Arias, and Botts.

Slightly older in Blalock and a lot older in Delgado.

That's a lot of potential.

The Rangers aren't going to be trading Michael Young for anybody but it might not be such a bad idea, depending on who's being offered. Like say, if you could get Chris Young (the CF) + from Arizona or something.

Ryan Sweeney is young but his career minor league OPS of .754 and his awful 24 for 45 stealing bases doesn't get me all that worked up. I'd rather have Brian Anderson, and he could likely be had for one of the relievers.

is older than Blalock. He's not as young as some people think and should probably be a bit further along that he currently is given his age.

Yep

Laird is prime age now, 27, and cant be considered a young player. It looks more and more like Fraley was right, and Laird is a backup at best.

fwiw...

...the major league OPS is dragged down pretty dramatically by his performance in 2004, when he came back while he was still injured.

If he posts an OPS around 750, he's a solid major league starting catcher.

If this team were to move anyone to make room

for Arias, wouldn't the obvious person be Young? He's not much of a SS, and isn't real likely to get better at his age. At some point, don't you have to investigate 3B or COF with him?

Considering Arias' injury, I doubt you have to worry about this for 2 years anyway.

That would seem to be odd.

The one thing Arias seems to have going for him is his + defensive play.

When you say would MY's offense be as valuable at 3B? He may well be an upgrade over Blalock.

Well, maybe not, but he is at best an average defensive SS. With his limited range and plus arm, it would seem as if he would be a better 3B.

True I don't know that Young's

offense would be much of a downgrade from Blalock if any at all.

But would the combo of Blalock and Young be better than Young and Arias. They probably would be defensively but unless Arias improves at the plate, it would be a downgrade offensively and probably a significant downgrade.

I have no idea about Arias

I am unimpressed with what I have seen to date. However, he is still young enough that you could see improvement over the next couple of years. If Blalock doesn't show considerable improvement this year, I think you know what you have there.

As I said earlier, I think all of this is premature until Arias shows something, and any decision looks almost 2 years out.
