I am very sorry for your loss,
Im 24 and I have lost many people along the way.  Shit I lost my best friend when I was 16. I also lost my very close cousins when I was 18.  bBoth due to car accidents. I guess my point is, you'll find a way to be strong.  Wether its through friends and family, or blogging.

You know, I kind of felt sorry for the guy when everyone was bashing him about his email to TR and spelling etc....  But lately it seems as if he has to comment on just about every little thing that pops into his head.  Just really getting old having to read comment after comment.

by B_Black on Jan 22, 2008 6:07 PM CST up reply actions

i honestly thought the movie was boring
but i liked him in other movies.

I'll always associate Ledger with David Manning of the Ridgefield Press.

http://tinyurl.com/bvx8g

To think, at one point it was so outlandish to call Heath Ledger the "this year's hottest new star."

by ab03 on Jan 22, 2008 5:53 PM CST up reply actions

Wow.
Boring?  Really?  I thought it was clearly the best movie of '05.

by brettgardner on Jan 22, 2008 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

agreed
It should have won best picture. Crash was terrible.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

by trza on Jan 22, 2008 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

Not only
was Crash boring, but so was Capote, Munich and Good Night and Good Luck.  That was a bad year for mainstream movies, I guess, and made worse by passing on the best of the bunch.

As a matter of fact, looking over the best picture winners and nominees since 2000, the crop has been worse than awful and it's a shame that the academy doesn't take a look beyond the most mainstream of movies.  Lord, looking at this list, the only good movies are Brokeback Mountain, The Departed, which is good but overrated, and There Will Be Blood. Oh well, there's always the "artsy" theaters for good movies I guess.

by brettgardner on Jan 22, 2008 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you on everything but Capote
I genuinely enjoyed that movie, though I can see how you could have found it boring. It was definitely a slow film, but I was riveted.

Crash was atrocious and Munich was even worse.

Good Night and Good Luck was an okay movie, but was a little too self-important for my taste.

Brett you didn't like any of the other noms this year? I enjoyed Juno, thought Michael Clayton was excellent and thought No Country was even excellenter.

I didn't see Atonement and have about zero desire to ever see it, though I'm sure I'll end up renting it on DVD with a chick at some point, especially if it wins BP.

I haven't yet seen TWBB, it only came out in my podunk hamlet this week and I haven't made it out yet... but I will, it looks awesome.

The 40 (still) trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on Jan 22, 2008 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

To be perfectly honest
I wasn't completely forthcoming.  Of this year's crop I've only seen There Will Be Blood and and Atonement (with my girlfriend).  I really disliked No Country as a book so I guess that kind of turned me off movie-wise, though I probably should give it a chance.  As for Juno, I'm a little worn out with what I assume to be the style of the movie.  Just a lot of it out there these days.

I agree with your assessment of Good Night and Good Luck.

And as for TWBB, I guess I'm just like everybody else who thought the only good thing about Gangs of New York was Daniel Day-Lewis.  He similarly carries Blood, which is much much better than Oil! by Sinclair, which is what it appears to be based mostly off of.

by brettgardner on Jan 22, 2008 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

TWBB
Saw it this weekend, and I was blown away.  Like brett said, he carries this film much like Gangs of New York.  However, the film itself is much better.  It is slow at times, but it really is a fantastic film.  Johnny Greenwood's (Radiohead) soundtrack is a perfect fit, and sets the tone of the film throughout.  Worth seeing for DDL, but you will enjoy the film.  We were left in awe when the movie was over with the sheer power of Lewis's performance.

And the film has some absolutely ridiculous/insane lines that DDL makes work.  Its pretty hilarious to quote afterwards.  Ex: Latest commercials  "I'm going to come where you sleep and I'm going to cut your throat"... completely out of nowhere.  And that's really quite tame compared to some others.

by Brian Thomas on Jan 23, 2008 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

Yep.
The critics always ignore important films that come from smaller studios.  Critics were pissing on themselves for crap like Crash but failed to see the beauty in a movie like Palindromes or Bad Education.

Pedro Almodavar should direct the next big budget, generic comic book adaptation in order to get average Joe Idiot to see his other films.  They are all works of art.  Fuck Crash.  My balls could make a  film with more depth.

by jparks77 on Jan 22, 2008 6:34 PM CST up reply actions

Palindromes
was good, but just a tad bit too much for me, artistically speaking.  Still, I agree that AlmodĂłvar is a great director.  The only thing I couldn't stand about La Mala EducaciĂłn were those annoying castellano accents, and Bernal tried really hard to Spanish-ize his Mexican shit, but he just annoys me too for some reason.

Looks like suicide or accidental OD.  I doubt we'll know exactly what happened for a while.

Very much like James Dean or River Phoenix.  Gone in the prime of their careers.

This makes his upcoming Joker role that much creepier...

I loved "The Crow" and still think it is one of my favorite movies. I remember when he died doing the movie, I was in high school and was shocked when I heard.

Very sad to hear about Ledger. I thought he had some very fine roles, and some not so good ones but when someone dies at 28...just sad.
