Mass Murder at Fort Hood

I have to keep short as I am on an abbreviated lunch break. First I want to say that we should all pray in our own way for all those affected by this incident. Can you imagine what it would feel like if any of those casualties were your family? I mean you almost assuredly dread it every time they are deployed to a combat zone, but the fact that these people met their end so violently here at home on a military installation...that's just crazy.

I have some questions about this, though. And some of it may sound cold but I want you to know right up front that I don't mean it to be that way. They're just quesitons.

The shooter, who is apparently still alive, acted alone. He had two handguns. I've never been in the army but I assume officers are issued the standard M9 9mm pistol, and he may have got another somehow or maybe used different guns all together. But if he used M9s, as I understand it they can only hold a maximum of 20 rounds in an extended magazine plus another in the chamber. Between two guns, that would of course account for 42 rounds. 13 people were killed and another 31 were wounded. That adds up to 44 rounds, and I think it's a safe bet that he didn't hit his mark with every single shot. In fact he was taken down in an exchange of fire with a civilian police officer.

Anyway, the point is he had to reload at some point. Now it does take a little time to reload a pistol like the M9 and it's not very much, but I have trouble understanding how in a room full of trained soldiers this guy wasn't taken out before he shot so many.

I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around how this guy did this. You cannot fire two handguns simultaneously with any degree of accuracy. I've tried and I've seen far better marksmen than me try, and that was always at a shooting range. Even if the guy could do it that would explain how he shot a lot of people quickly, but even then at some point he would have ended up with two empty guns.

I just don't get it. There's something I'm missing. What is it? I've been hearing about this story on the radio all morning and it's been bothering me on several different levels. Any ideas about how, though? And yes it appears the guy as a muslim or something but let's please not get into that or politics or anything.

Whither Godzilla?

Now that we are in the after glow of the World Series, the Yankees have to start to consider what to do with Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. John Harper of Newsday wonders if this is the last hurrah for Godzilla as a Yankee or could the World Series MVP be back in pinstripes again next year.

"I have no idea right now," he said with a smile through his interpreter after last night's game. "I hope so."

For weeks, even months, there have been whispers around the Yankees that there is no way the ballclub will bring back both Matsui and Johnny Damon, each of whose four-year contract is expiring.

GM Brian Cashman has made no secret of wanting to get younger overall, while also acknowledging a possible need to spread the use of the DH spot around, especially with catcher Jorge Posada turning 39 next season and Alex Rodriguez perhaps needing further hip surgery this offseason.

Of the two, Matsui always seemed more expendable because the condition of his knees has taken him out of the outfield and turned him into strictly a DH, one who doesn't run well anymore. Damon, meanwhile, can still be serviceable in left field, and, as we saw in Game 4, help win games with his speed as well as his bat.

If Matsui is indeed not resigned (~~and decides to continue to play in the U.S. which isn't a given~~), I would love to see the guy in a Ranger uniform and not just for his porn collection. The guy kills lefties to the tune of .282/.358/.616 last year and fits in with what the Rangers needs. He would be mainly a DH with a bit of OF or even first base in a pinch.

The question is of course price. Hopefully NL GMs will be smart enough to not give the guy a full time OF position. Hoping for smart GMs in the majors is always a hazard, but if the Yankees are not resigning him because they need to use the DH for Posada (eventually), that should set off some alarms to other clubs. If the NL teams stay out of the bidding, it's down to the 13 other AL clubs. ~~The wild card of course is the possibility he could go to Japan which would overpay to get Matsui back and where he would be treated as a super star.~~

UPDATE Matsui ruled out the possibility of going back to Japan.

I would think the Abreu deal ( 2 years, $19M) would be the model since both are the same age and play roughly the same position. Do the Rangers have that kind of cash? There's a ton of money coming off the books and the payroll will be lower if the Rangers don't do anything, even after raises, buyouts, and arbitration. If the team can get sold quickly (cross your fingers everybody) then the new owners will likely bring the payroll up to the league average (cross your toes now) and have money to spend on a bat.

Despite their money problems, there are still rumblings of the Rangers maybe paying for Marlon Byrd to stay even now. If the Rangers have the money to pay Byrd, then they have the money to pay Matsui. And really, who would you rather have? While Byrd can play the OF better than Matsui, he's not going to have as good a bat. Plus the Rangers have enough young toolsy outfielders that they can afford to lose Byrd's defense if it means an upgrade on offense.

I know this is all a pipe dream most likely, but hey, that's what the offseason is for right?

Says Vizquel could be resigned in the next couple weeks. I don't think you could find a better fit for the utility spot.

Byrd wants to test the market. Say all the right things, offer him arb, and express deep regret when he signs elsewhere.

Rangers looking for a RH middle of the order bat. Mentions Dye, Vlad, Sheffield, Glaus and Tatis. Note to the old school brother: you have a RH middle of the order masher on the roster, quit batting him 7th.

Ownership situation probably won't be resolved in time to affect the offseason plans. Of course... whenever it appears that Ranger fans have a reason for optimism, ahh shit, nevermind.

Servais is working with Salty and monitoring his rehab. Club is evaluating his status while considering bringing back Pudge. Have a feeling that catcher production is going to suck again next year.

Blalock and Andruw ain't coming back. The Hefty Lefty is expected to retire.

Apparently CJ to the rotation is at least a consideration. Hopefully just to appease him, dude doesn't have a starter's arsenal or mindset.

Lots of good stuff there. I'm hoping to see a big trade and some smaller ones because I don't see anything on the FA bargain bin that would improve the team enough to really be a strong contender going into the season.

And an OT note that I heard on the Ticket at lunch today, did anybody hear Teixeira's comments after the game? He said that he's been faithful and that God rewarded him by leading him to the Yankees. Go have a white wine spritzer with Bitch Tits and shut up, you doucheface.

Playoff Refunds Revisited - five days left

It's hard to believe that 5+ weeks have passed since the Rangers were eliminated - especially with the World Series just ending last night. I guess in other ways, it seems like it's been 2-3 months.

I wanted to give an update to the earlier post re: Playoff Refunds

4-6 weeks after elimination was the promised date for the refunds which is next Monday night (effectively Tuesday).

With one stated exception (http://www.lonestarball.com/2009/10/20/1093305/playoff-ticket-refunds#) refunds have not been received. I purchased tickets during both presales within the first 2-3 minutes using two different cards (one card for each presale), so I think I am indicative of the group.

Hopefully this is completed (started and completed) by Tuesday.

Rangers Hire Clint Hurdle as Hitting Coach?

The first word on the Rangers' hitting coach was that no announcement was going to be made today. Then, a source said Clint Hurdle would be hired. Then, a radio station said the same thing. Then, the Rangers' general manager Jon Daniels offered a deniel. Then, Hurdle declined to comment. Then, another source said Hurdle.

So, who do you believe? Go with the sources, who say Hurdle is going to be the Rangers' hitting coach and annoucement will be made before the end of the week.

Now that the play-by-play position is open with the Frisco Roughriders... what does this mean?

Did they just get rid of Scott Garner or will he join the big club?

I hope this isn't the case... but my gut wonders if Garner will join Eric in the radio booth, Dave Barnett moves to TV PBP to join Tom and Josh Lewin doesn't have his contract renewed. Especially since Garner did a few Rangers games last season.

Like I say, I hope not because I like the pairing of Lewin and Grieve, and do not like Garner. The Barnett experiment on radio failed miserably last season. Just wasn't very good.

Using Cot's Baseball Contracts as a reference, I extracted these contracts for a possible 25-man roster for next year. Our needs going into this off-season remain a LOOGY, a backup IF specialist, and a middle of the order bat that can DH. If the Ranger's FO says our payroll will match last season's 68M, then we have roughly 11M to spend this winter. (Cot's has what I believe to be higher contracts than reality for MY and Millwood, but these are the numbers I have, so I'm rolling with it) (This assumes a 8M increase through arbitration etc)

My "Newberg Report" cover artwork - Wallpapers & stuff

Double Newberg fanpost attack!

Newberg subscribers who get his emails have seen the cover design for this years Newberg report which I was proud to be able to participate in this year along with Marty Yawnick (who did the previous covers as well) and Jamey's personal input.

The concept of the cover and photos is a visual of a player development, obviously a key concept of the Newberg Report. A player is shown at different points of a pitch or swing in different stages of his development. For example Andrus begins his swing looking very rough in his Blaze uni, then is much more complete in AA, and finally finished in the MLB. A slight painting style fit in with that pretty well.

Anyway why I'm posting here is because you can't see the graphics at that size, on the book themselves all but Andrus will be too small to really see well heh, so here are some wallpapers for you.

All of these were done in photoshop directly based on great shots by MLB Photographer Brad Newton.

I’m now taking preorders for the 2010 Bound Edition of the Newberg Report, my 11th annual book on the Texas Rangers. The Good: Pau Gasol is out, look for Dirk to have a big game; The last 7 games have been decided by 7 points or less.

The Bad: The Mavs are 1-6 against the Lakers those last 7 games over the past 2 seasons.

The Ugly: Brendan Haywood and Andray Blatche combined for 27 points and 17 rebounds against the Mavericks fontcourt. Andrew Bynum had 26 points and 13 rebounds against a formidable Clippers frontcourt. Expect Bynum to have a monster game, early foul trouble is the Mavs' only hope.

Keys to victory: The Mavericks have to somehow get Bynum into foul trouble. The Mavs have to somehow hold Kobe under 30. Dirk needs to have a monster game. It would be nice if Shawn Marion could put up a Lamar Odom type line. 3's.. Terry, Kidd, Dirk, and Marion.. pour in the 3's.

Susan Finkelstein, 43, was charged with prostitution and related offenses after police say she advertised herself as a buxom, blond, die-hard Phillies fan who was desperately seeking World Series tickets and would have sex to get them.
