Recap: Colorado vs. San Francisco

Sports Network | September 01, 2008

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jorge De La Rosa threw seven scoreless innings and added an RBI single in leading the Colorado Rockies to a 4-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series. De La Rosa (8-7) walked just one and gave up four hits, while striking out six for the Rockies, who had lost three of four. Troy Tulowitzki had two of Colorado's four hits, including an RBI triple. Jonathan Sanchez (8-10), who was activated from the disabled list before the game, was the hard-luck loser. He allowed three runs on just three hits and three walks, and fanned six in his seven-inning start. Bengie Molina had three of San Francisco's eight singles, as the Giants failed to record an extra-base hit in their sixth loss in seven games. The Rockies broke a scoreless tie in the second. With two away and a runner on first, Tulowitzki tripled to the right-field gap to bring in a run, and De La Rosa followed with a base hit up the middle to plate another. The home team manufactured another tally in the third. Willy Taveras walked, stole second, moved up 90 feet on a groundout and sprinted home on Garrett Atkins' sacrifice fly to left. Sanchez set down 14 of the final 15 Rockies he faced. De La Rosa was equally as impressive, not allowing a runner past first base before handing over the ball to Manuel Corpas, who put the first two hitters on in the eighth before getting three straight outs. Keiichi Yabu's wild pitch in the home eighth allowed Taveras to score an additional insurance run for Colorado, and Brian Fuentes preserved the shutout with a scoreless ninth. Game Notes Sanchez remains winless since June 29, when the Giants defeated Oakland, 11-1...The Rockies lead the season series, 7-6...Taveras stole three bases and now leads the majors with 65 steals...Before the game, the Giants purchased the contract of infielder Scott McClain from Triple-A Fresno, recalled catcher Steve Holm and pitcher Brad Hennessey from Fresno and released catcher Guillermo Rodriguez from the 40-man roster...The Rockies, meanwhile, activated outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, who went 0-for-3 on Monday, from the 15-day disabled list, and recalled pitcher Steve Register and catcher Edwin Bellorin from Triple-A Colorado Springs...Game time was 2:27.
