A's reinstate Sweeney, transfer DH Thomas to 60-day DL

Sports Network | September 03, 2008

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics reinstated designated hitter Mike Sweeney from the 60-day disabled list Wednesday and transferred DH Frank Thomas to the 60-day DL with a right quadriceps injury, effectively ending his season. Thomas was a late scratch prior to Sunday's 3-2 win over Minnesota after feeling discomfort while taking batting practice. The 40-year-old slugger hit .263 with five home runs and 19 runs batted in over 55 games for the A's this season after being released by Toronto in April. Thomas was placed on the DL in late July and missed significant time from May 28 to June 30 with tendinitis in the same quadriceps. Sweeney was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 29 with left knee inflammation. He had surgery on both knees June 11 and was subsequently transferred to the 60-day DL on July 8. He was batting .292 with a pair of home runs and 12 RBI in 40 games with Oakland prior to the injury.
