Vince Cotroneo interview at AN

Over at AN, Tyler has an interview with new A's radio announcer Vince Cotroneo.

As you may remember, Cotroneo was let go by the Rangers after the 2003 season, despite doing solid work.  From the outside, it appeared that at the time, Mike Cramer and his team of trained monkeys on the business side of the organization were casting around to find someone to blame for the rapidly diminishing fan interest in the team, and decided that a solid, professional broadcaster on the radio team should be sacrificed so they could get someone with more "passion" (which most folks read to be more of a homer).

Anyway, if you are interested, you can check out the interview by clicking on the link above...

Cotroneo and the Rangers
I was a fan of Vince's while he was here and was sad to see him go.  I always thought he did a solid job and was certainly better than Brad Sham.  Then they made it worse by bringing in Rojas.

I have a question for you guys in other parts of the country....do other teams have the tag team format with their radio play-by-play guys where they trade back and forth after 3 innings?  I would just as soon have Nadel be the full time play-by-play guy and have a color guy as the other announcer.

tag-team
If I remember correctly, Eric leaves because he does part of the Spanish broadcast in the middle of the game, and he has probably become enough of a fixture there that they don't want to change it.  His absence was a lot less noticeable when Vince was in the other chair.

Breaks
I know that the Astros broadcasts have had Milo Hamilton breaking from the 4th thru 6th, although I don't know if that's the norm for other teams.

and even worse
they've canned Alan Ashby, who was ready for the full-time job IMO, and brought in 2 minor league turds, which probably means more rambling from "Father Baseball"

Milo Hamilton
He may be the worst radio play-by-play announcer I've ever heard.

Because he doesn't provide play-by-play...he sort of comments on and reacts to the action while it is happening, without actually describing what is happening.

And he doesn't give the score often enough.

The good news is
SeNilo isn't going on road games anymore.

Then again, even before he got blind and senile he sucked.

no joke
I still think it was shitty what they did to Ashby, I enjoyed listening to him.  I still wonder whose call that was.  And how'd SeNilo (lol) make the effing HOF in the first place?

You got me on that one
I heard him back in the early '80s and he wasn't worth a damn back then, either.

I"d have cared more about that...
If I didn't frequently fall asleep when Controneo was on the air.

I've liked Victor Rojas better.

Rojas is
an asswhipping of the highest order.
