Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Wednesday morning first place Texas Rangers news

With the Angels falling to Detroit last night, the Rangers are back in a tie for first place in the A.L. West...

And I have to say, I really like the way Hank Blalock is looking at the plate right now.  This is the Hank Blalock we've been waiting to see, not that pull-conscious guy who was around last year.

180 degrees away from that, though, is CoCo "the Vulture" Cordero, who, as Jamey Newberg pointed out this morning, is third in the A.L. in wins right now, by virtue of vulturing victories that should be going to other pitchers.  Gil LeBreton talks about Cordero's continuing failures this season, although he stops short of saying that Cordero must go.

The closer situation was the focus of Evan Grant's game story today, and it sounds like patience is wearing thin:

But manager Buck Showalter acknowledged the Cordero situation is causing the Rangers to rethink the bullpen makeup. Cordero has converted three of seven save chances this year. His ERA has ballooned to 12.00. Batters are hitting .333 against him.

Showalter didn't say the club would make a temporary change at closer but said the team would re-evaluate the situation daily. To make a change means shifting a lot of roles in the bullpen and moving lights-out setup man Akinori Otsuka to closer. What would become of Cordero is uncertain.

That's why the Rangers resist making a change. They don't want to create more problems than they already have.

"I'm not blind to the problems," Showalter said. "It's something we will continue to address. We've got a lot of good pitchers out there. If something needs to be done, then the pitchers will hear it from me first. It works better for us if [Cordero] can do that job."

Cordero pleaded to continue to do the job after Tuesday. But with each blown save, a picture is emerging of a closer with a complex problem. Originally, the Rangers thought it was as simple as getting Cordero to rely more on his fastball. Well, he threw a steady diet of fastballs, some reaching 97 mph Tuesday, and still got beat.

Though he had velocity, he lacked command. He was unable to get balls down or to the corners. Mark Kotsay singled on one fastball to start the inning. Nick Swisher watched four of them zoom all around the strike zone for a walk. Eric Chavez moved the runners up with one groundout. The fourth run scored on a second.

Then Cordero tried to overpower Dan Johnson, hitting just .100 for the year, with more fastballs. Didn't work, either. Johnson doubled into the gap in left center to tie the score. Cordero managed to get out of the inning with the score tied.

Meanwhile, on the catching fiasco...Kat O'Brien has a few quotes from Rod Barajas about his current slump, in which he says this is as bad a slump as he's ever had.  But Richard Durrett says Buck isn't considering changing the catching arrangement.

Shocking news, I know.  If Barajas continues to slump, I expect to start seeing articles talking about Barajas's great defense, and how it doesn't matter if he hits because he's a major reason why the Ranger pitching staff is doing so well.

You've really got to wonder, though, what is going through Gerald Laird's mind right now.

Think about it...the guy won the starting job in 2004 out of spring training, and was considered a ROY candidate until he got hurt on a play at the plate.  He came back before he was 100% healthy because the team needed him to be the backup catcher, couldn't swing the bat, and ended up losing his starting job to Rod Barajas because of a 6 week hot streak Barajas -- a veteran who had never shown he could hit well enough to be a regular catcher -- had early in the season.

Laird stayed in Surprise to rehab his injured thumb rather than go to winter ball, and then learned that he'd be spending 2005 in AAA from the media after Sandy Alomar Jr. signed.  He went to AAA, had a great year, made the all-star team and was named the top defensive catcher in the league, but couldn't get promoted back to the majors until rosters expanded, and even then got little playing time.

Then, even though the incumbent catcher is a mediocrity who Laird had already beat out for the starting job once, Buck Showalter told anyone who would listen this spring that Rod Barajas was his starting catcher, and if Gerald Laird wanted to be the starter, he could go be the starter in AAA.  Now, Barajas is mired in an awful slump, Laird is hitting well (and playing great defense), and yet Laird still is only going to get to play once a week.

If I were Laird, it would be making me a little bit crazy.

Kevin Mench, on the other hand, is in a groove, as Jan Hubbard discusses.

And Evan Grant's latest newsletter is out...

Durrett = Worst baseball writer in town
And in a town that employs Gerry Fraley that is saying something.

Someone needs to let Mr. Durrett know that Brian Shouse pitched an inning last night for OKC.

Huh?
Why do you say that he is the worst baseball writer in town? He's just reporting about Buck's plans with the catching situation, it's not his fault that Buck has an mancrush on Barajas.

Huh? right back at ya
Where did I say anything about the catching situation?

I mentioned the Shouse note in the link that Adam provided and this isn't the first time I have had a problem with his reporting.

The Shouse note
was probably from a release from the Rangers as to their intent. Since press deadline is very close to, if not before, the end of the game in which he pitched the 9th, I think it unreasonable to think that he should be able to include that in his article.

Perhaps
But the time listed on the story was 2 hours after the game ended which was just about the same time that the Rangers game was ending.  That seems like enough time to me in this day and age.

But even without this particular error, he is still terrible.

Bullpen roles
I think this whole thing about bullpen roles is way overblown by most managers. Is it really going to be that different for Otsuka to come into the 9th inning of a close game than the 8th? Is Alfonseca going to mysteriously become a worse pitcher if he is thrust into the "unfamiliar role" of pitching in the 8th inning of close games instead of the 7th? It's really quite simple, get your guys that are throwing the best out there with the game on the line, give the other innings to the guys that are struggling or just plain aren't that good. Right now Cordero is struggling, put him in lower leverage situations until he gets it figured out. And if you really believe in that "roles" crap Buck, then have him switch roles with Benoit and keep everything else the same.

It's already happening, Adam.
"If Barajas continues to slump, I expect to start seeing articles talking about Barajas's great defense, and how it doesn't matter if he hits because he's a major reason why the Ranger pitching staff is doing so well."

Just look at this month's game program.  It has a sappy, three-page article about how Barajas' value is all in his defense and pitch calling.  They even have a quote from Laird about how much he's learned watching the great veteran at work.

Hopefully, JD will stand his ground next winter and refuse to re-sign Barajas or offer him arbitration.  Otherwise, it wouldn't surprise me to see Rod starting at catcher for the Rangers for the next several seasons.  Buck's mancrush on the guy has robbed Buck of any reason or sanity about his woeful performance.

He IS frustrated...
...but he knows he can't do anything other than produce when he gets a chance.  It's almost sickening to listed to the TV crew mention every chance they get how it's so great that playing sporadically doesn't affect his hitting.  What a crock of B.S.  If you can hit, you do.  If you can't hit, you may have some hot streaks and do well occassionally, but at the end of the day you still can't cut it.  Bitching about the situation would only make it worse, so he has to do his best to put on 'the good face' - even if it means putting out quotes about learning alot from Suck-Rod.

television broadcast you hear Grieve talking about how Barajas deserves to be the starter.

Catching Defense
I don't know if anyone is going to be able to start pointing at Barajas as a wonderful catcher defensively. I know the amount of games played is double for Rod than for Gerald, but their stats aren't that close.

Barajas: 1 PB 9 SB 4 CS
Laird: 0 PB 0 SB 2 CS

And Laird's RF is higher than Rod's.

Honeycomb's big! Yea, Yea, Yea! It's not small! No, No, No.

RF
How does one measure range factor for a catcher?

Barajas is good defensively, but I'm not sure he's significantly better than Laird.

Re: RF
The same way you measure Range Factor for any other position.

Add together the putouts and assists recorded by the player and divide by defensive innings played.

It's a really crappy fielding stat, and I think Joe was being a little facetious when tossing that stat in.

well
Seems more irrelevant for a catcher than even the average position. I missed the joke, I guess.

Poll
I want to change my vote in "should the Rangers replace Cordero as closer." I'm having serious buyer's regret on that.

To be honest, Coco looked a little better last night. Maybe he's conquered the mental aspect of throwing his slider too much (step one), and now just needs to work on the mechanics to keep his FB down and control it. That said, I say if he doesn't do his job well in his next two chances, he can work on his mechanics in the 7th for a while. I still like Coco, and I like that he wants to be the ninth inning guy and believes he can do it, but to hell with protecting the fragile mental makeup of closers.

As an aside, wouldn't it have been Barajas calling for all those sliders Coco shouldn't have been throwing?

pitch calls..
most of them come from the bench.  Besides, they have been calling for the heater but he's been shaking them off.
