Mike Young not eager to sign an extension?

A new T.R. Sullivan article on Mike Young is up, and it isn't real good news for those who want Young to be a Ranger for life:

Rangers owner Tom Hicks said Thursday that signing shortstop Michael Young to a contract extension is a priority for the club in the offseason.

But Young, who is signed through 2007 with an option for 2008, doesn't appear to be too eager to get something done anytime soon.

"My agent and I will listen to what they have to say, but at the same time, we're in no hurry," Young said before the Rangers' game with the Los Angeles Angels. "When I signed this contract, I expected to play it out and see what happens. After that, who knows?

"I'm all about winning games; it's as simple as that. Where I end up after this contract is over, it's going to be with a team that has the best chance of winning the World Series. There's no secret to that, they know that."

The question is if the Rangers will be the team that has the best chance. The Rangers have never been to the World Series and have not been to the playoffs since 1999. Young was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 19, 2000.

"We have a lot of championship players," Young said. "It's just a matter of being on the same page, getting more pieces and everybody picking each other up. We didn't have enough of that this year. As time goes on, I'm getting more and more tired of missing the postseason.

"At some point you have to see results. If I feel it's here, fine. It goes back to who has the best chance of winning the World Series. Obviously though, I'm not going somewhere to play left field just because a team has a chance of winning. For sure, everything has to be the right situation."

This shouldn't really be a surprise, I don't imagine.  I have to think that Young is going to be reluctant to lock himself in long-term in a situation where he thinks he's at risk of joining Toby Harrah and Buddy Bell atop the list of modern players with the most games without making the playoffs.

What is interesting, though, is that Young has tended to always say the right thing, the (with apologies to Sharky) the politically correct thing.  The fact that he's coming out and making comments, to the effect that he's in no hurry to sign a long-term deal because he wants to play for a winner...

That should be a warning to Tom Hicks.  He says he wants to poke around in the clubhouse, see what the mindset is of the players?  Young's comments seem to give a pretty clear signal of what his concerns are...

"Sell the team"
signs need to start showing up at the ballpark.

I wish
TGH had some sense of how many fans feel that he should shore up his finances and sell.  Sometimes change for the sake of change freshens things up. Change for the sake of taking a profit should be reason enough.  If the Forbes data is right, he could make some money.

MY
I don't think he's saying anything that we didn't know - he wants to play for a winner and if progress isn't made here then he'll go elsewhere. I'm quietly confident (okay, I'm hopeful more than confident) that they will get him signed up eventually but they will have to show that they are serious about winning. Him just coming out in public and saying it possibly just hits it home a little more to the people in charge about what is at stake.

Yeah
It's that he's coming out and saying it that's the story here. That sends a very clear message if they're listening.

Hitting it home
I just wonder if we'll get a Tex interview down a similar line at one point. Nothing like a subtle hint to get the point across and increase the pressure on the organisation to make changes.

he's just being smart
keeping his options open.  It does not benefit him at all to sign an extension now, unless they throw money at him for like 7 years or something.  Maybe "It's just a matter of being on the same page" is MY code for 'if they get rid of a certain someone I'll sign'

Prediction..
After his contract is up, we will make him the team captain, the day before he signs with another team...
We will see...

By the way
I'd like to hear Gordon Keith reenact that voicemail that Hicks left Young.

Reading between the lines
Seems like you don't want Young to be a 'Ranger for life'?

young
i dont blame him for his comments at all, though im slightly surprised to see him outright say it. the guy plays hard everyday and hasnt gotten jack out of it, no playoff appearances and an owner that questions his leadership.

this is definately a sign of discontent and hicks had better be listening, if this team doesnt change the way it does things (from ownership down to the coaching staff) then it needs to just auction off the core players and start over.

Pimps be damned, it's harder out here for a Rangers fan!

MY
As alarmed as I am at the thought of Young playing in another uniform, I'm actually glad he came out and said this. He has this image as the stoic, silent leader, so his saying this may actually make an impact on the management and ownership. I'm glad he hasn't lost his fire to be the best and win a World Series. I really hope he does it for Texas.
You might think I'm crazy. I agree with you.

Yeah
I'm sure Mike Young is going to be why the Rangers dont sign Mike Young.

The fact they'll never offer him a contract surely cant have ANYTHING to do with it.

Lets just say the spin has begun, and shame on you Adam for perpetuating it.

Its more likely because
no player in his right mind would stay with a second rate franchise like the Rangers, unless they are grossly overpaid.  I'm sure playing for Adolph Showalter has something to do with wanting not to re-sign a contract also.

Anyways I already predicted two years ago
The Rangers wouldn't sign Young, Teix, or Blalock.

And I've never been wrong about a Ranger free agent, ever. Nor have the Rangers ever signed their own free agent in the past, for that matter.

who cares?
I don't see what the issue here is with MY. Why are we so eager to sign him to an extension, when he's locked up for two more years at below market value? So he's lukewarm about re-signing. Big deal. We shouldn't be so eager to make him a Ranger for life. He turns 30 in a month, his 2005 season was probably an aberration, and he's a gaping hole at shortstop. I know he's got "the good face" and all, but he's not a franchise guy we should be making a long-term commitment to. Teixeira is a superstar - he deserves that kind of talk. Young's just a nice player.

I think
generally speaking you're right. By the time you extend Young, you're going to be beginning to wonder what to do with him defensively.

I think that at least for me, I know what the fandom, media, and I think organization think of Young, and he's a good illustration of what's going to continue to happen with Buck here and Hicks doing things the way he has in the past - he doesnt' want to stay. Also, there is a feeling, since Teixeira has Boras for an agent and since Young has already signed one extension, that Young is much easier to talk into signing - yet he comes out and says this.

Beyond that, yeah, I definitely am more concerned with Teixeira staying.
