Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Friday morning things

The big story, I guess, is Jon Daniels saying there is "no plan to change managers" for 2007.

Except I don't really see this as a big story...what else is Daniels going to say, at this point?  Last year about now, the company line was that there were no plans to change general managers...

More interesting to me is Tom Hicks saying the decision on Showalter is Daniels' to make...

Randy Galloway has his doubts about Buck Showalter coming back, saying the chances are 50/50 in a column that compares Buck to Bill Parcells.  A couple of key excerpts:

Don't think the bean-counters aren't currently in Hicks' ear. There are season tickets that must be sold in the off-season. How easy would Buck be to sell to the fans these days? Would, say, a Lou Piniella, or some other new manager, suddenly pump in fresh dollars this winter and next spring?

Nothing personal, Buck, but it's about the bucks. So goes the business doctrine.

Plus, Showalter should now really be concerned. Before Thursday night's game with the Angels he was a given a lukewarm, verbal butt-pat by Hicks and GM Jon Daniels.

But the real truth on Buck will come in October, once the bean-counters are finished munching on Hicks' ear.

* * *

Bill Parcells. Buck Showalter.

What's the difference?

For one thing, media perception. And in most cases, fan perception.

Showalter is considered a failure, and someone who should be on his last managerial legs here.

Parcells is not exactly regarded as a success during his Valley Ranch tenure, but there's rampant optimism that an immediate change is about to happen. Well, at least there was until last weekend in Jacksonville.

Still, no one is hinting, media-wise, that Big Bill should be fired. Buck, however, is reading the hints.

Edinson Volquez's outing last night was encouraging, if a bit short.  But Richard Durrett reports Volquez changed a few things, which he believes helped.

Durrett also had a chat session yesterday...

There's a lot of news out there today about Rangers players possibly going elsewhere...

The Philadelphia Daily News has this on Carlos Lee:

The Astros are rumored to be preparing to take a run at free-agent slugger Carlos Lee at the end of the season, reasoning that a strong righthanded bat that could take regular aim at the Crawford Boxes in left would fit perfectly into their lineup. Buyer beware: Lee has hit only eight homers for the Rangers since the All-Star break and some Texas officials reportedly believe it's because he's badly out of shape.

Carlos Lee?  Badly out of shape?  Nooooooooo...

The Chicago Tribune talks about the possibility of the Cubs pursuing GMJ, if they can't (or decide not to) re-sign Juan Pierre.

We have this story out of Baltimore, about the Orioles possibly acquiring Mark Teixeira this offseason, that includes this nauseating segment:

The rumblings out of Arlington, Texas, seem to indicate that the Rangers will make major changes this winter. Everyone, including Teixeira, is rumored to be available. According to various sources, manager Buck Showalter has alienated most of his roster this season -- Teixeira included -- and owner Tom Hicks is ready to blow it up and start over.

And finally, the Chicago Tribune discusses the ChiSox trying to trade for Michael Young this coming offseason.

CWS have some interesting players...
Would do this trade...

CWS get - M Young and Schlact (High A-20yr-RHP)

Tex gets - B McCarthy(LHP), H Phillips (AAA-24yr-LHP) and J Fields (3B)

crazy
I don't think there is any chance they trade Young.  Look at the reasons, Young is really cheap, a top of the order hitter and a shortstop.  With no replacement ready, Texas would overpay in the free agent market and it would be a huge downgrade.  Finally, this team has had PR problems lately and this would kill them.  I don't think they want to fight this battle.  Chicago is not going to give any major league ready players since they are a contender.  It would not make sense for them to subtract to add.

Young
There's a lot of talk that the Rangers should trade Teixeira, because they won't be able to re-sign him.

Young is a free agent at the same time Teixeira is.  So those who would want to trade Teixeira should want to trade Young, as well.

depressing
Everyone watched the Rangers when they had the crazy core of Clark, Gonzo, Pudge and Greer and it went all to waste.  This core is going to be wasted also.  At least we saw the playoffs with the first core.

I think they both should be dangled next
midseason when the Rangers will likely be out of it again.

Fields
He put up a .911 OPS in AAA this year, but this is also the first year he's really done anything in the minors.

Fields also strikes out a ton (120 in 408 AB this year, and 142 last year) for those who care about that sort of thing.

Honestly, I'm not sure the White Sox have enough young talent left in their system to pry Young from the Rangers. He should fetch a ton in trade, were he to be made available.

Matthews
Yesterday on the Hardline they were discussing GMJ and were throwing out numbers like 3/$30 and 2/$20 with a $12 million player option.  I really can't believe that Matthews would command that much at his age after a career year.  Oh, and Mike Rhyner said that Juan Pierre should really be a corner outfielder which quickly reminded me why I don't listen to them very much anymore.

by LoneStarBallUser on Sep 15, 2006 10:13 AM CDT reply actions

To be fair
He was saying that in reference to his defense. Rhyner hates Pierre.

Granted it's a dumb statement because he doesn't come close to hitting enough to play a corner spot, but his comment was in reference to his defense.

Defense
His defense isn't good enough to play right field either since he has no arm.

Agreed........about the HardLine.......
I used to listen (a couple of years ago) because they were really the only one's committed to the "Great Game", but damn they're dumb......anyway, I also agree I can't see GM,Jr. getting any more than 3/$24M with maybe a team  option for a 4th year (which I'd do BTW).
If we have any hope of contending with this "core" thru 2008, we don't need to be auditioning lead-off CF's who can switch hit. I also think he MAY give us a discount, (seems grateful for the chance he got here) unless we try to money-fuck him totally.

Juan Pierre ?.........you said it perfectly !

White Sox
Remember, Ozzie has a man-crush on Mike Young.  He may convince the front office to give up too much for him.  Not that I advocate it, but it's something to consider.

trading Young
Don't see it happening.  Trading Young is about the worst possible public relations fiasco I could imagine from this team, unless they announced a raise in ticket prices the same day they traded Young.

That is just wishful thinking by Ozzie and the Chi press.

Unless Hicks is ready to sell now, he will want to find ways to increase attendance next year.

I don't know
They could announce that Buck will be the manager until he's 80 and that JD is getting the big boot to let the greatest mind in baseball have another crack at the GM's role.

I just can't see any reason why they would trade MY. I just fail to see any reason you let a guy go who is as cheap and as good as he is and who is pretty much loved by most of the supporters.

I'm not fickle, I just don't like you.

This sucks
Diamond and Danks probably wont be in the rotation until Tex and MY are gone... I guess we should start building for the future if those two are going to be gone...

Wow
Lee would hit 100 home runs in Houston.

He better hope they sign him.

Lee
Not sure if he'd hit 100, but I do agree he'd be a good fit with the Astros.

Righty power hitter + Crawford Boxes = happy Astros fans.
