Dave Sessions has some notes this morning about the Rangers being in danger of losing Don Wakamatsu and Rudy Jaramillo from their coaching staff. Jon Daniels says his preference would be to keep the coaching staff intact, for what it is worth.

Sessions also has some comments from Daniels about the approach to this offseason's free agent market:

Daniels said the club will approach the free-agent market cautiously, in part because this year's free-agent crop is thin.

"We're somewhat limited by the market," Daniels said. "We'll have to see what the trade market brings. We're not in a position where we feel one player is going to turn the tide here. We'll look to improve from within first."

T.R. Sullivan suggests Reds hitting coach Brook Jacoby could end up replacing Jaramillo, should Rudy leave. Sullivan also runs down the players that the Rangers drafted in 2000, before the Montreal Expos grabbed Grady Sizemore. It is an ugly list...although it is also worth noting that Sizemore slid because of concerns that he was going to go to college on a football scholarship...

Also, Frankie Francisco's contract for 2008 is for $775,000. The Rangers have 5 other arb-eligible guys on the roster right now...Gerald Laird, Joaquin Benoit, Marlon Byrd, Akinori Otsuka, and Ramon Vazquez. Vazquez and Otsuka are possible non-tenders, Vazquez because he's a utility guy that the Rangers might not want to have to keep on the roster all winter (or pay what he'd get in arbitration), Otsuka because he may potentially be out for all of 2008 if he has elbow surgery.

I hope JD

stays away from the big CF options this winter. The Rangers do not need to add aging players with large contracts when it could be years before we are really ready to be a competitive force.

I also worry about his ability to trade for major league talent. We don't need to trade any of prospects unless we can receive impact players that are either in their prime or will be heading into their prime when we once again are able to challenge for the division.

This winter is going to be very important. JD must be reserved and stick to the plan. If not the Rangers could be stuck in the mud for another five years until the next attempted rebuild occurs.

unrelated Q that I know somebody here knows:

What is the rule about when a player's "clock to free agency" starts?

I remember Adam once saying that allowing Mark Teixeira to start earlier in the season in his rookie year ended up bringing his arbitration (and free agency) years to him a year quicker.

What's the rule?

Clock for arbitration=

Amount of time on the 25-man roster (including major league DL time).

After 3 "years" on the 25-man roster (or in some special cases 2+ years), the player becomes arb-eligible.

After 6 "years" on the 25-man roster, the player becomes eligible for FA.

i hate when people like Sullivan talk about the players that we could have got in a draft...

Coaches leaving...

Not disappointing to me...If you're going to commit yourself to Ron Washington, they should have cleared out the coaching staff last year and let Ron bring in guys that coach the way Ron wants to play...Having your manager wanting to take one approach to the game, and several of his coaches preaching the opposite is garbage.

Sullivan is totally wrong.

His list doesn't prove the Rangers ineptness in the 2000 drafting; it shows how dumb the Rangers were to not sign Garrett Nash from this year's draft. :)
