Hurdle really shouldn't be NL manager of year.

disagree...

payroll and expectations alone give Hurdle the advantage over Piniella. The Cubs should have won their weak division and have the high priced talent, no one picked the Rockies to win the NL West.

You can't pick a record run.

Hurdle is really bad at in-game strategy, but he did keep the team focused on playing "the Rockies way", which put them in position to make their miracle run.

I'm biased by the really strange in game decisions he has made. I feel like the Rockies won more games despite rather than because of Hurdle.

...in the playoffs? I know the award is voted on before the playoffs, but he's been incredible in the playoffs. Making pitching changes exactly when he should and instilling greatness in his players. He made both Manuel & Melvin look like idiots out there. Completely outmanaged them.

Ellsbury

Was riding a hot bat when he was getting regular playing time. He's been in the postseason twice, I think, both as a pinch runner. I wonder if he can perform like he was.

I was also going to suggest Cora over Pedroia, but the article says they're sticking with him. I think I'd put Ellsbury in the leadoff spot and Pedroia in the 8 hole though.

Boston would probably

give him up pretty cheap and I would much rather the Rangers get him for his salary than go after Hunter or A.J.

His bat has been pretty bad lately but I believe he is a plus defender and would be a better stop gap for this team next year imo.

he's fine defensively but isn't much of a hitter. I'd be fine with the rangers getting him if the redsox want next to nothing in return but i think otherwise i'd pass

Not Much of a hitter

Crisp is not a consistent hitter. Here are his splits by month:

April/Mar. - .235/.274/.338
May - .224/.303/.308
June - .330/.362/.455
July - .323/.391/.505
August - .227/.321/.299
Sept.Oct. - .269.311/.388

It is feast of famine for him. I have seen some references to Tom Goodwin on this site as being the last good CF that has played for the Rangers. Goodwin was with the Rangers for about 2.333 seasons, and here are his numbers:

'97 - .237 .319 .319
'98 - .290 .378 .338
'99 - .259 .324 .341

I think it is safe to say that Crisp could match Goodwin in terms of offensive numbers (maybe a bit better with the park effects, and assuming he increase in walks is not a fluke).

So, if Crisp could be the "new Goodwin", would you think differently about getting him?

i think that if the redsox are going to sell very low on him then i have no problem with the rangers going after crisp and hoping for him to increase his offensive production (but i wouldn't count on much)

but... i'd take a cheap trade for crisp over spending big money on hunter or rowand.

btw anyone know off hand what the rest of crisp's contract is like?

I don't think the BoSox would give up on Crisp so easily. If Drew is struggling/hurt next season, Ellsbury would be a nice replacement (especially from the defensive standpoint). Crisp has two years remaining plus an option year. So, the Red Sox can wait a year and still find a buyer for Crisp. Even if Ellsbury proves to be a better player, why not keep Crisp for a bench player? The BoSox have the salary (especially with all the high-priced players leaving this season). Coco only really becomes expensive in his option year ($8 million). Next year he will make $4.75 million, and $5.75 million in '09. Kielty, in contrast, is making $2.1 million and is arbitration eligible. I am not going to guess how much Kielty will make next season, but why not spend the additional $2 million and ensure the team has a very capable player on the bench?
