Rick Reilly leaving SI for ESPN

Long-time SI writer Rick Reilly is leaving at the end of November, and will join ESPN in June, 2008, after his non-compete runs out.

Be interesting to see what Reilly does.  I really enjoyed his articles and features in the late-80s and early-90s, when he focused on football and golf (the only two sports he really seemed to like).  He was my favorite sportswriter for a while.

But once he went into the "Life of Reilly," back-page columnist role for SI, he seemed to get too treacly and preachy, and I've quit reading him, for the most part.

he's a hell of a writer
but i consistently an example of a writer that too often becomes part of the story or is the story.  a lot of times in his column you'd also see him being real lazy.  i guess he can't always write amazing pieces though.  sports illustrated losing him will be a big loss.  i know of the 6 years i was a subscriber, the last 3 was only for the Life of Reily column.  a ton of us readers would read the back page first.

Interesting...
that just yesterday it was announced that Dan Patrick is joining SI and now a day later we learn that Rick Reilly is leaving. Both are overrated but it will be interesting to see what happens.
