Tigers deal for Edgar Renteria

And the hot stove season is off, with the first trade going down...

The Tigers have traded Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez to the Braves for shortstop Edgar Renteria...

Pretty nice haul for the Braves, who were ready to hand the shortstop job over the Yunel Escobar anyway.

And seems to make the Tigers non-factors in the looming ARod sweepstakes, unless they want to keep ARod at third base and put Brandon Inge back into a super-sub role.

Atlanta
I think they sold Renty cheap. I could be wrong.

Sold?
Why buy when you can Renteria?

by Inkara1 on Oct 29, 2007 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Keep in mind
Renteria is a career .276/.335/.385 hitter in the AL. He's also 32 years old. The Tigers better be ready to accept an utter failure!

In reality, I think this isn't a terrible trade for either team. Renteria should be a quality player for the Tigers and he will be a rock at SS.  This gives them Guillen, Polanco, and Renteria in the line-up from the infield. Not a ton of power but some pretty good hitters none-the-less. As for the Braves, I like them going in and picking up Jurrjens. He has some experience and looks to be a solid pitcher. I don't know much about Hernandez. Anybody else know much about him?

I just beat the internet. It was hard.

From BP:
"“Hernandez hit .293/.344/.391 in the Midwest League this year for his full-season debut while also leading the Midwest League with 54 stolen bases. He’s an absolutely burner on the base paths, and also a spectacular center fielder with a plus arm. Despite the numbers, he’s still more tools than performance. He needs to either hone his approach to develop into a leadoff man, or develop more power (the bat speed is there) to become a dynamic power/speed combo. Very high upside, but obviously some risk. He’ll likely begin next year at High A Myrtle Beach.

Both players were going to be slam dunk top five prospects on the upcoming Detroit prospect rankings."

Good trade for the Braves. They were dying to shed Renteria's salary, and they picked up two top-5 prospects.

You're hijacking the thread and being repetitive. Move forward.

Both
players received by Atlanta are solid prospects.  Nice return in my opinion.

Perhaps...
but he is not a great offensive player and only under contract for 1 more year.

Yeah, Sorry Adam.
I never thought Detroitwas gonna be Arodville.  Im still calling the dodgers.  Arod screams Dodger to me.  no reason why.

Bad trade
for the Tigers.  Renteria is injury prone.

Wow
That didn't take long.
And it looks like Atlanta management still knows how to wheel and deal.

clearly
After trading Saltalamacchia the Braves realized they needed to address their shortage in strangely named players.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Would anybody on this board
be satisfied if this is what we got in return for Young?
Here's the last 3 years:
Renteria
Avg.     Obp.   Slg.
.276    .335   .385
.293    .361   .436
.332    .390   .470

Young
.331    .385  .513
.314    .356  .459
.315    .366  .418

Young clearly has him beat in Rbi, and has had 5 straight 200 hit seasons. But other than that they seem pretty comparable. Maybe another prospect for Young. For those who want to trade Young this seems to be what he's going to get you.

No, he won't
Because he still has 80 million owed to him. Renteria's free fairly soon if I'm remembering his last contract correctly.

Young
His contract makes him untradeable.

Arod
Forget Detroit (I already said that).  You can for get the Dodgers also.  Arod is not going to a pitchers park.  I can guarantee you that.

His best bet is Texas or the Cubs.

Then he will likely wear cubbie blue
I still think he will play in Disneyland.

Arod, Rings, and Immortality
At this point in Arod's career, I have to think that he is more interested in the stats he compiles than a ring.

IOW, if he was given the choice between the two, I think he'd opt for the stats.  He can get those stats in Arlington or Wrigley.
