Gut feeling
JD will go hardest after Pie.

I see him as #1 on JD's CF list.

I feel the same way...
If we could deal for Pie, and sign Fukudome.. I'd be content. Pie alone would be great, and I get the feeling Fukudome is coming here.

Also..
Name a price; what do you think it would take to acquire Pie?

by cmkelly29 on Nov 7, 2007 10:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Right
I think everyone's dream is Laird going to them with some extras thrown in.

Realistically, Laird, Kiker and Schlact would get it done I think.  Maybe substitute Duran for Schlact.

The player Pie is, it would be no surprise to hear a request for Saltalamacchia in return.  But you have to hope the catcher market elevates Laird's otherwise beat-down rep.

I don't think the Rangers
give up Kiker...not sure what it would take to get him but I hope it would not include Kiker, Hurley, Volquez, Main, Beaven...

Sure
Main and Beaven aren't going anywhere -- they are all projection.  It'd be like selling an unused scratch off...weird on either end of the transaction.

And you're probably right about Kiker...too much projection.

And Hurley has to be the last guy the org wants to give up with all the work put in.

But if Volquez helps get you a long-term CF, you have to do it.

Thing is, if I'm the Cubs...no way.  The conversation has to include a name like Hurley or Kiker.

I agree...
If I'm the Cubs no way, but if I'm the Rangers no way as well, that's why I just can't see that deal getting done.

Cubs
Why would the Cubs want Laird?

by Brandon Wilson on Nov 7, 2007 11:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They don't
Geovanny Soto is a much better hitter and has become at least an average defender. He is also younger, cheaper and already on their roster. They have no need for Laird, unless it is in a backup role.

Laird
It was a rumor around the trade deadline.

by hightowersmith on Nov 7, 2007 11:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

However since then
Geovany Soto has establshed himself as a more promising player than Laird.

Fair
I hadn't kept up with their catching situation...

I still like JD to go hard after Pie.

The Cubs are thin at short.  If they asked for Kinsler and Hurley in a Pie deal I wouldn't end the call by slamming the receiver down.  Have to take a look at that.

by hightowersmith on Nov 8, 2007 12:34 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You must like Pie
quite a bit better than me. There's no way I'd give them Kinsler and Hurley for him (even if they filled in around the edges) right now.

Also, I'm not sure that DeRosa couldn't handle SS better than Kinsler right now defensively if they wanted to go for the good hitting so-so fielding SS, and they have been pretty equivalent hitters the last couple of years.

I do
Pie is potentially a 5-tool CF.

We have infield depth behind Kinsler in Duran.

I'll take Duran and Pie in a "re-tooling/-building" year, and look forward to Davis across the infield by July as well.

That said, Ian's obviously a huge fit with this org and a veteran presence in a lineup of young hitters.

And it sounds like they're already locking him up, so yeah.

Pie a pipe dream
The Cubs are in win now mode and if they deal Pie it will be for player(s) that can help them right now.  I don't see anybody on our roster that would get you Pie.  Maybe Kinsler, but, really, would you deal Kinsler for Pie?  I don't think I would.  I live near Chicago and Pie has yet to show much at the ML level.  I know Pie is young, but in Kinsler the Rangers have a much more proven commodity.
