Minor league stuff (non-Rangers)

Some things out there to check out...

John Sickels has his Detroit Tigers top 20 list up...pretty barren, after all the trades, with only 1 B+ prospect (Rick Porcello), and two B-s (Jeff Larish and Danny Worth)...

On the other hand, Sickels says in the top 20 for Cincy that the Reds have a strong, deep system, with what I'm guessing he'd deem one of the 2 or 3 top systems in baseball.

And Kevin Goldstein runs down the A's top 11 prospects at BP, with Daric Barton getting 5 stars, Trevor Cahill getting 4 stars, and the rest being three stars or lower...

Barton
So he'll be their next 1B?

Two frontline catchers arriving at the same time...I feel like I've heard of such depth elsewhere.

Cruceta got a C for Detroit

He ranked him #19 on the Rangers last year
and gave him a C, so I guess it figures as a grade. He was solid in the pen for Oklahoma but showed control issues.

OT: Adam, how
many people actually bought the LSB stuff?

thoughts
glad to see that someone else thinks that cueto is gonna be REALLY good.

bailey could flame out realllllly quick

tigers system might suck but they have a good GM, probably had a very good draft (will know this tiem next year), and if they flop have more than enough players to move for more talent.

a's system...just not that impressive anymore. see what beane does this year/next year to remedy that.

yeah
I'd love to acquire Cueto, but seems like the price just got higher

Oh, would that the Rangers
had moved to the NL those years ago.  They could be on the verge of "something special" just by virtue of being in the NL Central.

Barton
A 5-star prospect that is an "average" 1B who can't slug .450 in AAA?

His ML debut rates are not sustainable, obviously.

So as a comparison to our system...
Reds:

A: 1 player
A-/B+: 4 players
B/B-: 6 players
C+: 16 players

Rangers:

A: 0 players
A-/B+: 5 players
B/B-: 8 players
C+: 10 players

So I'd say the difference is they have better top prospects while having slightly less well above average prospects (11 to our 13 in above B-) and they have quite a bit more talent in the C+ range (16 to our 10).

Definitely more impressive then our farm but if the Reds are in fact 2 to 3 in baseball, we certainly must be top 5 because we aren't significantly behind IMO.

Well, keep in mind on the depth part
that he is REALLY hard on our young Latin guys. BA and others will give us a lot more credit for them.

I really hope for baseball that
the Tigers do something really special.  I know, I'm a Ranger fan saying I hope Detroit becomes great.  I am sick of the Yankees just like everyone else, and yes, times are changing.  The Red Sox, imo, have already jumped to a great lead to win the W.S. but the Tiggers are right behind them.  They have made signifacant upgrades.  All in the right direction.

Texas should follow what they did.  Grow your own talent.  Let them go through their ups and downs and every thing might work out.  Then when you need that one or two pieces, sure go ahead and sell the farm team.

tiger myth
prospective tiger starting lineup (G for grown, B for bought, T for trade)
Granderson G
Polanco B
Cabrera T
Ordonez B
Sheffield T
Guillen T
Renteria T
Thames B

then:
Verlander G
Rogers B
Bonderman G/T (depending on your view)
Willis T
Robertson T

so I count 2.5 homegrown players and a whole lot of traded away prospects.  If you want to grow from within use the indians or the rockies or diamondbacks as and example but heck the yankees have more homegrown players than the tigers

Polanco
I could have sworn they traded for him.
Dwyade once challenged God to a game of 1-on-1, only to realize that not even God can play 1-on-1 against Himself.

Polanco
was traded from the Phills for the great Ugueth Urbina.

wish we had the tiger GM as our GM
hart or  JD

I wish...
...that Tom Hicks and the FO was ok with splurging on draft picks and not worrying about what Bud Selig thinks the way the Tigers do.

I honestly think that just enforcing a set payroll for draft picks would do enough to level the playing field that you wouldn't need to significantly change the financial structure of the majors to reduce the advantages of the Yankees, Red Sox, etc.

And before everyone goes crazy, yes I realize that high priced draft picks (just like high priced free agents) can flame out just like low priced ones can.  But doesn't it seem unfair that the Yankees and Red Sox will spend close to the equivalent of a major league payroll just to sign one year's draft picks?

Word
I love the guys we got as comp picks, and even Roidy, our fantastic 2nd round 3B, but if Matt Harvey and his 1.5 million bonus demand was a part of our draft and we'd be talking about one of the best drafts in ages.

Harvey
FWIW, the Angels didn't sign him after taking him in the 3rd round.
