Giants sign Aaron Rowand

The Giants have signed Aaron Rowand to a five year deal.  No terms disclosed.

I'll guess 5 years, $70 million.

Update [2007-12-12 17:39:7 by Adam J. Morris]: -- It is actually 5 years, $60 million.

What
FA CF's and COF's are left?  Emil Brown was just non-tendered by the Royals, whats everyones thoughts on him?  He'd be a 31 yr old 4th outfielder...

looks like its Murphy or a trade.

i'm guessing
5 for 75.

COFs: Barry Bonds, Shawn Green, Geoff Jenkins, Emil Brown, Luis Gonzalez, Kevin Mench, Reggie Sanders, Shannon Stewart, Brad Wilkerson.

CFs: Mike Cameron, Kenny Lofton, Corey Patterson, Alexei Ramirez?

I'm guessing
we end up with a Mike Cameron or Alexei Ramirez.

The Pirates are wanting to unload Bay, I would be okay with him coming over here, but they'd almost certainly want Hurley

Rowand
ESPN says it's 5/60.
"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

5/60
wouldn't be an overpay at all. He's a better player than Jose Guillen who's making 12M per.

Well
If he hits like he did in 2004 and 2007, he is.

If he hits like he did in 2005 and 2006, he isn't.

Rowand
I think he will be worth it for about 3 years and then start slipping into albatross over the last couple of years of the contract.  By year 5 he should be a liablity.

Yeah
This doesn't seem like such a bad deal, really. Not any worse than Torii Hunter's contract, anyway.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

From McCovey Chronicles, the Giants blog
Sabean: I'd like Jason Bay, and I'm willing to offer Noah Lowry straight up.
Huntington: Uh, that's not going to be enough. That's a start we can work with, though. Or could we build a different package around, say, Steven Pearce?

Sabean: An unproven player? I'm insulted. Good day.

Later that day

Sabean: I'd like Joey Votto, Edwin Encarnacion, and Josh Hamilton. Note that most of those players are unproven, but I'm willing to offer Noah Lowry for the three.

Krivsky: Hmm. I'm going to have to decline this one, but I'm willing to talk about a package that includes one of those players.

Sabean: Are you freaking kidding me? Am I in some other reality? Have I been prescribed medication that I forgot to take? Why doesn't anyone want a young pitcher with 14 wins? He even got those wins on a bad team! Fourteen wins, people. Fourteen! I'm just going to take my ball and go home. Kick your own damn tires, pal.

"UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 1:57pm: My Japanese-speaking friend says that this article indicates Fukumori signed with Texas for two years and $3MM.  The $1.5MM salary is about twice what he made in '07.  Fukumori also had offers from the Pirates and Rays."

You know
I don't think I would've minded that deal for the Rangers.

I wouldn't have loved it, but in a world where Aaron Cook is a 10mm player, 12mm for Rowand ain't half bad.
